If you want a War of the Worlds related book, try reading the actual book.

H. G. Wells.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0812505158/qid=1120648408/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/103-5101603-0956667?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 - The book.

It's a bit of a slow read actually, but if you like the story you'll probably like this. The aliens are much more methodical and bent on complete destruction. Some of the bits are funny because of the time frame, 107 years ago. We attack them with calvary.

Man, I am going to hate the new movie.... the book and ORIGINAL movie were great, and now spieldburg messed with a classic.

It's like if someone made Jurrasic Park 50 years from now and makes all the dino's into aliens....

Yes I heard that people tuned in their radios, but didn't catch the part that said the brodcast was science fiction. So they heard a news voice saying that people where being masacred by the aliens and they are heading towards your city to burn you alive... A few people opted to jump off tall buildings instead.

It may all be BS.

I read the book years ago, I ought to go see the movie. Maybe this weekend.

Here is a NYT article from 1938 that describes the event:

Probably because it doesn't follow some formulaic path to a huge explosion. The essence of the story is more than a hundred years old, complete with the ending. It stands to reason that it wouldn't stack up if taken out of context. The point of it, for me at least, is the story's roots. The story has its own story in the various incarnations over a century. I guess it's just greater than the sum of its parts for me.

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy should hold you over for a while.
