im new to the sport of woodsball and am considering playing the position of abush sniper/ghost flanker. my question is about the flatline barrel system with the A5. ive read that the flatline barrel uses a textured surface inside of the barrel to help creat backspin. since every ball is slightly different how much effect does the have on long range shot (30 yrds +)? ive read that shot are less accurate then with a standard barrel. my question is HOW inconsitant is the accuracy? is it noticably different? is a regular or carbon fiber barrel a more consistant barrel for a player with the "one shot, one kill" mindset?

If the correct paint is
used, small bore, the accuaracy is great, It adds 200+ feet, and, a
little semi-off topic piece of advice, don't say sniper around here,
people HATE it.

The Flatline is not going to perform how you expect it to. No texture, it has a smooth bore like other barrels, however it is curved up like a banana then it levels off. This creates backspin on the ball, like a curveball in baseball. As the geletin shell rotates, it creates lift. The problem is that if your flatline is installed improperly, the lift is not directed up, but to the side. Also, it the barrel gets dirty, your spin will not be consistent and the ball will curve off target. The paint must be small bore, and is usually more expensive. The Flatline has no porting, and is therfore loud. The barrel is 14" long and has a large shroud - so it makes a big target for other players.
It is a tool for a specific job, but most of the time in paintball games it's advantages are not worth it's complications. For instance, if you play in the woods and only see each other at <100', then you have no use for it. If you play in a open cow pasture with no cover and the players stretching themselves out to the maximum range of their markers while laying on the ground, then you will have an advantage.
The flatline had some advantage besides the added range. For instance, if you shoot through foilage, you do not need to arc up as much, because the flatter trajectory. Also, if you tilt your marker to the side, you can throw curve balls to get at people behind cover (if they are the proper distance from you). These advantages only occur under certain circumstances, that games don't often provide.
I suggest you go play more, and see how close your firefights are and get a barrel for that. Only get the Flatline if it will work well for the field you play. The Flatline is both expensive to buy, feed, and maintain (in your time). A $50 12" conventional aftermarket barrel will serve you well in far more situations. All to often I have seen flatline "snipers" give away their position by fireing before I saw them, and because they are so far away they never hit. Once you get closer to them, whats the advatage of the flatline?
Ambush Sniper/Ghost Flanker - do you mean you want to split off solo? Then you need firepower. I suggest spending the Flatline cash on a response trigger, X-chamber and decent conventional barrel. If you want your marker more accurate, get your pressure and velocity under tighter control, and get a good paint to barrel match.
huh enough to get you started, I have to get back to work.

Nick, have you ever actually seen a Flatline barrel? You say it has no texture, no porting. Either you are trying to be stupid (and doing a good job of it) or you have never seen a Flatty. It has a textured white surface inside the barrel and 12 porting holes. Also, by Ambush Sniper/Ghost Flanker he does mean going off solo, at certain times An Ambush Sniper or Ghost Flanker do not need more firepower, if anything they pack less firepower than anyone else so they can move quietly and hide easier.

The problem is that if your flatline is
installed improperly, the lift is not directed up, but to the side. A-5 flatline is easy. Improper installs are unlikely.
Also, it the barrel gets dirty, your spin will not be consistent and
the ball will curve off target. This
point is actually more true for the A-5 version. For best results, you
need to take it off and wash it in warm soapy water at the end of every
day you use it.
The paint must be small bore, and is
usually more expensive. Yep. I always use Marbs.
The Flatline has no porting, and is therfore
loud. This is overrated, not that big a deal.

A-5 Nick not C98. This is what happens when you post before having your morning coffee.
I like the Flatline for the A-5. It's been a solid performer for me for
over 2 years. It has decent accuracy at comparable ranges with other
after market barrels (not the best or the worst) and the extended range
has some limited advantages.

Yep my impression comes from my old 98 (not C) with Flatline. Call me biased. I got the Flatline when they first came out, so I'm sure they worked out some bugs for the A-5.
Close up I had to aim at players feet, and far away my balls would veer around them. Tuning the velocity helped a little, but I was happy to sell the whole rig when I got my A-5.

Not on my Flatty. Firepower is hits per minute, not how much ammo you carry onto the field. The whole point in an ambush is to be positioned so as to overwhelm them with fire. Your correct in that he doesn't need a lot of paint, since his firefights will be short, but he does need to be able to lay a lot out in a short amount of time.

It is the size of the paintball or bore size. Here are two very good websites that will help you match your paint bore size to a barrel.

i plan on playing up in front for a long time until me and my friends work up some team chemistry... plus money doesnt grow on trees, lol.
what about carbon fiber barrels? ive read that they are super light (this im sure of, my hockey sticks are made of carbon fiber and graphite) and are really quiet. would they be a better choice or is flatline the way to go?
(still cant find out what paint the feild i will be playing at uses, will get on that)
oh, and one more question... why are a lot of people in this forum so anti spec ops? whats the deal? i dont mean to step on anybodys toes, but im still curious....

sniping does not apply in paintball.
No matter what anyone says it just wont happen.
IF anything, dont get a flalinte...you think its a greta thing and when you get it, it goes to crap....way to much hassle for a barrel.
I recommend a lapco bigshot, its very accurate and cheap and take alot of paint sizes.

Nah its a different Version of a sniper. Ambush sniper is often used to cover the weak side when Strong side attacks are used. Their objective is to try and get at least mid field if possible, Then when any enmey Attack force shows up and starts to pass by, he Either spooks them or trys to get one guy out then Retreat, basically scaring the opposition and forces them to waste time and ammo while they search for him. His main role is to cause the opposing team as much havoc as possible so that they waste time getting to his teams Flag station/base and gives his team more time to secure the enemy flag.
A ghost flanker is slightly different, cvuz while doing this he is often with a Small attack force but stays some distance away from them and moves through cover. he uses this to his advantage so that he can get a different angle on enemy players that engage the rest of his Squad or team and engage them from behind or to the side where the enemy players have little to no cover most of the time.
My suggestions for barrels are SP progressive, Lapco big shot, J&J Ceramics if you want something for 50 bucks. Stiffi carbon fiber barrels for 100 dollers. but thats my suggestion,

yeah you dont really shoot people from long distances. but you can use the stealth skills of a sniper, hiding from a concealed location and ambushing, then relocating to a concealed position then repeat, i would suggest an autococker pro-stock, possibly a q-loader, quite, accurate and fast, the perfect paintball "stealth" gun.
