Subject: Fun Project- UPDATE pg. 2

On a trip down to the pawnshop (hey, they have cool stuff sometimes) I found an A-5. Not your normal A-5, however. The previous owner tried to "mill" it (I think), but it turned out looking like he dropped it into a wood chipper. He also attempted a fade paintjob, but failed miserably. The plus side is that it had a Flatline and an E-grip on it, but what sold me was the pricetag of $25. So... here's the pics...

Before you freak out, I have all of the pieces to make it work, I just took these pictures during an inspection. It dry fired better than expected, but I could tell he had NEVER oiled it. So, anyone have any ideas (milling, paintjob, etc.) to resurrect it?

Updates on page 2.

That person had bad taste.  I'd paint the rest green like the flatline.

I'm too far into this to post pictures of it together, and I'm too lazy o charge my camera anyway. So, I'm smoothing out everything that I can, and I just chopped off the rear sight, and it looks pretty good. It's coming along well and I'm starting to think about paint. I have some metallic blue, and it would look good, IMO. Just need to order some parts and it'll be ready. I might have some update pictures by tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Paint it all black to see how it looks a solid, neutral colour, then decide from there.

Any one have any suggestions on tools I should use to work on this? I'm not great with a Dremel, and I don't want to put this thing through anymore pain... metal files? low grit sand paper?

Sand paper if you don't want to dremel it. It'll take longer though.

I've done milling on the 98 with just metal files. You can find simple files in
different shapes and sizes to mill different stuff.

i usually use a dremal for my main work then smooth it out with a file then sand paper getting to a fine fine grain sand paper... i did this to my friends model 98.... and it looked smooth and amazing.... then just primer and paint... b/c your down to bare metal.... use primer

*UPDATE* I was kinda lazy today, and have been sick, so I didn't get much done...

I stripped all the paint I could before my sickness hit me again, as well as cut off the rear sight and filled in those hideous trenches and "blowback holes" that guy cut. The Bondo stuff looks spread out but it is actually very smooth.

Leave it to an Alabama fan to make nothing out of something, don't screw it up.

Anyway, I like how it's coming along, and what a deal.

Well, we have some bad news. I was dry firing the gun before I went paint it, and I have decided that the receiver halfs are unsound and could potentially be dangerous. When the previous owner was cutting the sides down, he cut it to thin, and he had to make the hole by the rear bolt to prevent too much pressure from building up. When I covered the hole and dry fired it, the side began to bulge out. I quickly took out the CO2, and said to myself that I wasn't even going to deal with it anymore. The good news is I was planning on something like this coming up, so the new receiver halves are on their way.
