*Pardon the sudden rush of threads, havent posted in several days*

So I'm at staff and we get on the topic of Vegans and the like and he pointed out something I never considered.  Your jaw bone is attached to a bone on your skull (or something along those lines).  When you chew food, the bone attached to your jaw takes the stress from each bite.  When man began eating meat, more stress was applied to this bone which grew and because of this growth, the cranium (sp?) also grows and as a result the brain grows to fit inside the skull.

So the question is will a society relying mostly on vegetables for food result in man's brain shrinking?

No you are thinking of the brain stem, the brain stem is a plant yes, it resembles a rose or a dafodil. The brain itself is deffinatly meat, its a bit like cube steak.

What do any of you have against vegetarians anyway?

I'm not one because I enjoy meat too much, and I don't feel it to be a very pressing concern of mine, but still I am curious as to the cause for such dislike. Is there a cause?

I think that it's all outright wrong. There are plenty of pure carnivorous meat-eaters out there (while we're only omnivores), but for some reason we exercised our brain-bones more? Or got more energy? Give me a break.

Actually, it's ironic that any of you could actually believe this. Society started to really begin changing for the better during the Neolithic Era, when we began to farm and plant crops (domesticated animals came later).

1. Right, we were no longer forced to live a nomadic lifestyle. That comment was intended to point out the irony of it all—not to seriously try and argue that plants make us smarter. Why, that's about as ridiculous as arguing that meat makes us smarter!

2. I have a hard time believing that, but whatever . . . .

I really dont get why people hate vegitarians. I think its the same reason people are racist, or people hate homosexuals.

They dont understand it, they dont get it, the other people are different, so BAM, instant hate.

My best friend and her entire family are vegitarians. I have eaten meat around them. Do they flip out and call me a murderer. No. They enjoy their soy-food.

(I must say, I have gone vegitarian for small amounts of time , 6 months about, and some of the veggie-food meat-substitues are not half bad at all)

I think the people only hear about people getting called murderers for eating meat, none of them ever get called it themselvs. Its always a friend of a friend of a cousin. Same with people who go into McDonalds and nobody speaks English. It just dosent happen.

I guess that why I lost like 6 pounds within a few weeks of going vegetarian. Your vegan friends problably started shoveling in peanut butter and other sugary things. If you do it wrong it is bad for you.

Goly Gee, I post a simple hypothesis and everyone goes into a killing frenzy.

For heavens sake, this thread wasnt made to say that vegitarians are dumb (pardon the title, I was really sleepy when I posted it).

The whole vegan party can pull the sticks out of their rear and chill a bit.  Just because we make a post about vegitarians doesnt mean we are flamming you.

The hypothesis does make sense though when you read through it.  Meat is a tougher food and thus more force is applied and the bones grow to suit our needs and the brain expands with the growing skull.

I was hoping to see more open-minded people but apperently the forum vegitarians are as closed minded as those bloody white, racist, christain rebublicans.

But you are misunderstanding something about how the body changes over many many generations. Things change because positive traits are passed along because they improve the survivability of the person with the favorable trait. The skull grew because men with larger heads had bigger brains and were there for smarter.

Diet doesnt dictate evolution.

Let me clear up a couple things:

Red meat contains all kinds of bad things for you, cholesterol and saturated fat being the tops. Chicken and fish are much less bad for you and fish contains some essentials like omega-3 (or 6?) fatty acids.

People who eat a complete vegetarian diet (recieve all essential amino acids) eat a far superior diet to meatatarians, depending on the type of foods they eat. You can absolutely get fat on a vegetarian diet if you load up on simple carbohydrates like donuts, breads, and candy.

Dibi-there is nothing that the brain needs from meats. The brain is unique because it can only survive on pure sugar (glucose), and cannot metabolize anything else. Other body cells can metabolize fats and proteins for energy, but the brain cannot.

And Linus, how many times has a crazed, liberal vegetarian ever called you an "animal killer"? Truly? Most people become vegetarians due to their own desires.

If the food source changes, either due to ecological change, social change, or whatever, then evolution has to quickly play catchup with the new diet.

Then, of course, there is the co-evolution of moths and orchids, for instance, where the preferred diet of the moth (orchid nectar) is the driving force behind drastic changes over the centuries.

Of course, I may have completely missed your point.

The hypothesis doesn't make sense, and that's what we're arguing. Don't be silly and call us closed-minded because we disagree.

That wasnt what i meant. What i was trying to say is that, a birds beak will be long if he eats insects out of wood because that is a favorable trait, not simply because he eats the insect.

Dibi - I did miss your point.  My bad.

I still think diet is tied to evolution, though, in a very tautological kind of way - if you have evolved to be able to eat lots of things, for instance, that could give you an evolutionary leg up on species that only eat one thing.  Or if you have evolved to where you can utilize certain proteins that allow you to grow bigger, that could also be an evolutionary advantage.

More to the point - if a species evolves to where it eats certain insects, and has evolved the beak to go with it, that bird would presumably now also evolve the internal organs to best utilize the nutrition of the insects, and perhaps the beak will be tweaked further to allow for easier bug-crushing.

I see your point (I think), but evolution works on so many levels, so the simple fact of the diet itself will help define what is a favorable trait.

(I presume that was obvious to you, but perhaps not to others)
