Certainly you can use something else, but why do you doubt that the information given to you by the manufacturer of the marker is incorrect?

I have been using lithium grease in my 98C and have found it to last longer and lubricate parts without internal scuffing better than any light oil. It isn't as if the marker isn't powerful enough to overcome the thicker viscosity of the lithium grease. Using light oil, the areas that I had polished to a mirror bright finish showed slight signs of wear. I re-polished those areas and switched to lithium grease. Since then, about 4 months ago, the polished areas are still polished with absolutely no indication of scuffing or wear on the "O" rings.

I doubt that Teflon in the oil will harm anything, I have just never found Teflon oils to live up to their hype...I have been trying them in my firearms for years and have found none the performed any better than ordinary oil.

The manual says to use white lithium grease only on the barrel o-ring, safety o-ring, and tank o-ring.  Use Hoppes for everything else.  The reason for this is that lithium grease is used on o-rings that do not need to move in normal operation.  For moving parts, use Hoppes and you're good to go.
