Manual.  Unless my right hand is occupied in various situations, then automatic.

Depends on the car.

It depends, if you want a sports car, manual is the way to go. If you are driving a truck and no hauling anything, manual may be the way to go if you are experienced with a manual transmition. It dpends on the aplication really.

The only thing about manual that is difficult, is learning how to feather the clutch.

Why do that to a Neon, the cars are worth like 5 dollars.

If i had like an Escalade an auto. However the stang in your pic you must have manual. Reason, faster, better control, faster... Oh and why pay an extra $1,500 for an auto. Put that cash to upgrade the stereo.

For practical purposes, I prefer automatic. Manual for trucks(hauling stuff) and sports cars. You should learn how to drive in a manual, IMO.

Manuals aren't hard to work. It takes a tad getting used to, but it isn't rocket science. Everyone should learn how to drive one. But I do agree that it depends on whether to go auto/manual.

I agree. What if you're in a possible position where you have to drive a manual car? Something like your friend gets his finger cut off and you have to drive him to the hospital, but you only have his car. Something like that, you need to know how, for safety.

Manual whenever possible. Drive one for long enough and you'll be eating, reading, smoking, taking a sip of your drink, and shifting gears in a long fluid motion. It just becomes second nature. My jeep was a manual and it was perfect.

Everybody should know how to drive one, even if they don't prefer it. They should do themselves a favor and at least learn. More than one bank robber has been caught because their stolen getaway vehicle was a stick and they couldn't drive it.

Manuals are fun in some cars, however for all around Ill take a built up auto(high stall, shift kit, ect).

Oh and Snipa69, WTF are you talking about robbing RPMs? I could hit the rev limiter in an auto the same as with a manual.

Take a look at any car compainies website, under the est. gas mileage manual always beats automatic. And manual is cheaper than automatic to buy. You can get a car moving quicker with manual too. My dad had two company vehicles. They were both Subaru Legacy outbacks. Same engines. One was stick, the other was auto. The one with stick was much quicker.

Actually, I know a person (the husband of my fiance's boss) who is scared to death of little people. We were all at one of their co-worker's wedding receptions, and when the little person would come within sight he physically shut down from fear. He managed to leave a couple of times to get some air, but the rest of the night was spent with him doubled over, hands hiding his eyes, and breathing deeply to not panic. This man is 6'6" and in his 40's.

Yeah and they suck. If you cant figure out a stick shift, there isnt much reason you need to be on the road. Its not so hard, it becomes second nature. People saying "i like automatic better, i dont see the point of shifting, im too lazy" its so lame. You dont even notice when you shift. Either that or you are entirely too lazy for your own good.

Actually, I have come to appreciate automatics more.  They are SOOO nice for rush traffic driving.  And then there was the time when I had to drive a stick for 3 hours with a dislocated right shoulder...  sure wish I had an automatic then.

Sticks are still fun, but automatic transmissions have improved a lot over the years.  Nice newer cars with decent engines do all right with them.

I drive my stick an hour to school and an hour back. Ive never found myself thinking. "I really wish i had an automatic." But with a dislocated shoulder, i wouldnt want to use my arm at all. The only time it can be scary is when im on a very very steep hill. And even then, its not so bad.

If you know how/its necessary, manuals are pretty nice.  Ecspecially now that most cars have computers telling them when to shift.   A manual, you decide.  If a single wire goes out of place, your check engine light comes on, and your car begins to shift horribly.  This then tears up your transmission.  Then you get the privelage of paying the mechanic a couple grand.

I dont like foreign cars.

well i dont kno anyone who replaced tranny after onyl 4 years manual or non

Mine hasnt been replaced or looked at in 32 years. Works just fine, but the clutch slips alittle when I do alot of shifting.

And I had a Honda, and I will never have one again. Too hard to work on unless you have little asian hands.

It's not the transmission itself on manuals that you have to replace. It's usually the clutch. This is from people not knowing how to shift propertly. When a automatic goes out they usually go out big. Also they are more complicated to work on, so when they need repairs they tend to be costly.

Yup, the clutch on my bronco needed to be fixed, it wasnt a big deal, the last automatic car i had, the engine threw a cam because of the tranny, never again. Automatics=

Well since i jeep with my family i pic manuel because when you have a stick you generally will have lower gears which means you can go much slower on the trails and you can just crawl up the rocks also stick is much easier to repair

Eh... Not so fast, i dont like stick sometimes while off roading. In mud, you can just go, if you are really in there it will just stall your engine out. I like automatic for muddin and crawlin usualy.

i dont do mudding and i see no point in it but if ur going down hill with low gears the stick is the way to go but if ur going up hill especially if it is really steep automatic is the way

automatics aren't harder to work on...there easier to repair and to pull from vehicles than standards are...i've been working for a transmission rebuilder this summer so i've learned a few things
