Because other is a poor way of asking someone to express their beliefs. The political spectrum is not a linear path from republican to democrat.

Because you only put two options that are at opposite ends. There are thousands of other options and to define oneself with just one category wont work either.

Take for instance the person that beleives abortion should be the choice of the mother and not the goverment but also supports a large military, higher taxs, tighter gun legislation, marriage rights for all genders, no constitutional rights, slavery, not legalizing weed and no immigration laws. Where does that one fit?

No one is truely liberal or conservative so therefore everyone will be other.

Guess what? Voting for a party does not mean that you agree with everything they do. It means that you feel their core beliefs and goals are most in line with your own.

If someone believes in gun banning, legal abortion, and some major conservative belief, they will probably vote democrat. Not because their ideas follow the party to the letter, but because, weighing the options, they realize that is the way they can get the most of what they want.

You said beliefs, not party. This is not a case of splicing meanings, it is one of two completely different things being linked together.

As a side note, in fourth grade I voted for Nader because I felt sorry for him being the underdog.

I am against more "Liberal associated" beliefs, so I would have to say I lean on the conservative side.  Plus, I "extremely dislike" (I've stoped using the word "hate" to describe how I feel) way more "Liberal Associated" people.

I basically consider myself a moderate democrat. I voted liberal basically because I am most definately not conservative but I don't really fit all of the steriotypes that go with being liberal either. I don't want to ban guns and I'm against abortion but I'm also against God in school and crap like the patriot act. Not to mention big business. I dunno, I would probably fill a page if I would actually try to explain my political beliefs fully.

I couldnt have said it better myself.

Did i ever mention i despise the party system? It just proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that 99% of the population is a bunch of morons. "More than 2 political extremes? Zomg WE R TEH CONFUZED"

Political parties are like windows ME. Completely tailored to simplify a thing that isnt very complex in the first place for the lowest common denominator.

Ill tell you a secret: It doesnt matter WHO gets elected, theyre all politician scumbags that DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

The one-or-the-other mentality gives people less to think about.

I usually compare political parties to high school cliques.

The stereotypic beliefes you have must mean you fit into a perfect little window of one specific group of people who think and belive a few things similar to you.

And obviously if you dislike one person you must be from the complete oposite side of the political spectrum.

Parties suck, period.  Thats why i'll never register in a party.

I used to be sort of conservative, and beleive that Bush was the best, blah blah blah.  But then I realized, why do I care?  I can't do anything at my current age, so why care now?   I can't change anything.

I just don't care anymore, after seeing various elections, I don't want to associate myself with any whiney group such as "conservative" or "liberal".  I could type more why I don't like to associate myself with them, but it should be very obvious.
