Ever come across a game that's just difficult, either by design or just by some fluke? Maybe it's a game that seems made to stop you in particular, or one that's just too hard for its own good. I've had a few in my time, including Battle Toads, which I've never beaten, and more recently Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, which I'm just completley lost in.
The big one though, is Steel Battalion. I got it for my birthday last October, and granted, I haven't had all that much time to put into it, but crap man, it's rough. I'm on Rookie, the easiest setting, and just this weekend I beat level 4.
When you play it, you've really got to commit some time, which is why I don't get to play too often. Once you start a mission, you can't pause, you're on a time limit (thanks to fuel if not the clock), and you've got to manage your VT on the 2 flight-stick, 40 button, 3 pedal controler, including the manual transmission, windshield wiper, and in-cockpit fire extinguisher, all while you're being shot at.
If your VT gets destroyed and you don't hit the eject button in time, you die, and your game is erased. You have to start from the beginning. If you do eject you have to use supply points won from completing missions to buy another VT, and if you don't have enough your pilot is let go and your game erased.
I had to stop and celebrate after beating level 4, which involves getting past enemy forces at a dock and sinking a battleship with fully functional weaponry that it doesn't mind using on you.

Hello there, this is my first post. There is a game that's always
given my trouble and I can't exactly tell you why. No matter how
hard I try, it always gets me in the end.
"Crimson Skies" game out in 2000 for the PC. Some of the aerial moves that you have to perform are amazingly tough! I do everything that I can to survive and sometimes it just gets the best of me and spits it out.
Though I'm not totally old skool, I do like Dungeon Siege, BF2, and a
few other games. The greatest milsim of all time, Operation
Flashpoint, will always be installed on many of my computers. I
own six copies of it and there are more to be bought for $6 at
Half-Price Books.

Welcome to the boards.
I love Half-Price Books. I always check there first before going to Borders or Barnes and Noble.
I get stuck on those games that require amazing precision all the time. I hate it when it's a "kiddie game" and I still can't get some stupid little move to beat it.

Was it a pug? I wouldn't mind being a pug.
I hate games that use total obstruction of your view, bad cameras or near-total darkness for "mood." Unless that mood is furious anger.
And I thought of another pet peeve. Games that have pathetic enemies that you can just mow through like so much grass, and then a boss that wipes the floor with you and your pathetic skills. I found that to be the case with Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. It was reasonably even as Light Side until I hit the end boss, which cannot be beaten with the equipment and skills that made quick work of everything else in the game.

I noticed that in most of the star wars games. They start out easy, and
you get into a rythym, and then you get screwed because the learning
curve sudddenly hits the ceiling. Bounty Hunter is like that.

Metriod Prime drove me nuts for hours on end. I never have enough time to commit to a game to make a good dent in one sitting. I may play for an hour a week, or a month, depending. And that doesn't translate well in games like Metroid. I spend the first half of my session trying to remember what I was doing, where I'm at, where I've been, etc, etc...
Although I hate to admit even playing it, 'Need for speed: underground' is getting rough in the upper level. Its more of a "OMG, YOU CHEAP SONUVA-!!!11!!! difficulty, though. Stupid racers.

Kinda, starts out really hard, then you realize that you can upgrade all your stuff...
However, the levels follow a really wier pattern. (If I say the work "easy" I really mean tolerable).
The pattern follows thus.
easy
hard
kafargin impossible
easy
easy
easy
hard
kafargin impossible
kafargin impassible
kafargin impossible
trip to game store to trade game in and get two used games that I previously did not own...

I've beaten any other game i've come across...
But Echo.... Echo.... It haunts me.

Echo. I never really got to play much of that one, but I couldn't get anywhere when I did. Maybe if it had a frickin' laser on its head it would be a better dolphin.
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. Oh, I love that game. I also hate it. After you spend an hour creeping through the level, getting perfect stealth (no, not him) kills on all the enemies, and then die because you roll into a pit that you couldn't see, or run into the boss of the level whom you cannot hit, nor get away from.
That's where I'm at now. A fairly tricky level with two end bosses. One is a lady who might be beatable, if only she would ever, EVER, stop blocking. The other is a guy who stands off to the side, raining down super shurikens on you. You can't go beat him up without her reloacating your spine to some less comfortable place, and you can't fight her while you're constantly staggering around in pain from the flying metal.

Edit.
Murakumo was the name of the mec game. That and any gundam game i have ever played.
I liked the echo the dolphin games. I had echo the dolphin the sands of time, i think i almost beat it.

Yeah, NES games didn't pull any punches. Ghosts and Goblins was hard. I could get through the first time, and then, when it made you do it all again, I could get about halfway. Some of those precision jumps were just too much. I couldn't ever beat the TMNT game for NES. I could get to this room, already on my last legs, and these metal spike things would crush me in the middle. At one point I swear they were already past the only points I could move downward to get by. Trapped.

Yeah, NES games can kick you in the nuts any time they want, like battletoads (and TMNT, come to think of it)did with me regularly. I think the only NES game I ever beat consistantly was Rampage, and really, that wasn't hard at all.
Speaking of the NES, I re-inherited one a few weeks back from a friend. I'm going to keep it and start a game collection. You should think about contributing to it via donations. Yes, I'm talking to you with fifty NES games in a box in your closet that hides your old porn collection. They're collectiong dust, and giving me five of them isn't going to make anyone suspicious of whats under them.

I said one of the best Resident Evils. Resident Evil 2 was the best, 3
wasn't bad, and the original was just plain horrible. Code Veronica on
the Dreamcast was brilliant and had excellent graphics, X on PS2 was
just a more refined version. But it sure as hell didn't suck. Resident Evil 4 is tied with Resident Evil

Haha the final boss on KOTOR 2 was easy. That whole game was easy. I
went light side starting off with a guardian then choosing a weapon
master at level 15. That way I had the best force powers and the best
sword powers. Force Wave + Master Flurry= unstoppable.
But games I can't beat would be Ninja Gaiden. Rented it and couldn't
get past the tutorial. Also 007 Agent Under Fire and Kingdom Under Fire
the Crusaders.
I usually only beat RPG's cause they all have interesting story lins or
customization options that other games don't have. Beaten KOTOR 1 and
2, Jade Empire in 2 days and Fable in 2 days.

Yeah, The 7th Guest was tough, but I loved that game. I got so into it from the moment I first read about it. I remember it was supposed to come out for the Nintendo CD attachment for the SNES, using that port on the bottom that ended up collecting dust. I finally got it for the PC and spent all kinds of time just moving around the mansion.
The 11th Hour was pretty good too. Tougher, because of a treasure hunt type quest to go on, and the mansion is all run down, but I liked it quite a bit too. And the company's other game in that style, Clandestiny, was ok. It was in a Scottish castle, with animated characters on the rendered background.
I never beat any of them without help. Although finding the map to the Stauf basement in the upper bedroom on the rug was a huge help.

I never really got into the Resident Evil series, but I did beat Metroid Prime. Sometimes it's just about having enough energy tanks and getting lucky. However I just recently got unstuck on Metroid Prime 2.
I hate it when this happens, but it's kind of funny too. I have more than 20 years of video game experience to my fiance's years since she's been with me and begun playing very infrequently. I'll be stuck on a game for awhile, getting incredibly frustrated, and then she'll sit down beside me for three minutes and ask if I've "tried it this way." I laugh, because that couldn't possibly be it, but it works, every time, and I feel stupid because she can be very clever and see things I'm utterly blind to.
That's how it was with MP2. She asked if I had gone over here and tried something. I learned long ago to keep my muttering about how "of course I'd have tried that if it could work" very very low. When I got to this little part she pointed out the way through, and I could have screamed if I weren't so relieved.

Every now and then, when I want a real challenge... I sit at my Intellivision II and get my Tron or Burgertime on.
I don't think I've even attempted any of the other games listed here. But I suppose when your video game system is from 1983, you tend to get left behind.

I treasure my Intellivision II. Somewhere in a box, I think I even have a second system I kept for spare parts. And the voice attachment for Bomb Squad and B-17 Bomber (my favorite game).
It amazes me how high-tech it all was... back when 75% of this forum wasn't born. haha.
Right next to my Intellivision is my NES with the Powerpad for the track and field game.
Y'all can keep yer Xboxes and PS2s... I got an electronic throw rug, that shows off my awesome fake-hurdle jumping skillz!

Ever get a chair next to the powerpad so you could lean on it and really tap the feet? It was about the only way I could consistently beat Cheetah, especially at the hurdles.
I'd probably hurt myself playing track and field now. And I never convinced my parents to get my Intellivision. I had to wait until my cousin could make a strong case for the Atari 2600.

Call of Duty 4's campaign is giving me trouble. I'm playing on the next to highest difficulty, but still... I hate helicopters. Hate them. Flying devils.

Ya I used to have that game and there was actually something wrong with mine. I got up to a certain point and this door was supposed to open to let me into another room, but it wouldn't open. The dorr behind me would lock and I was just stuck in this tiny hallway.

Evil just got smart. Why fight him? Just lock the compound down and let him starve.

Haha the final boss on KOTOR 2 was easy. That whole game was easy. I went light side starting off with a guardian then choosing a weapon master at level 15. That way I had the best force powers and the best sword powers. Force Wave + Master Flurry= unstoppable.
But games I can't beat would be Ninja Gaiden. Rented it and couldn't get past the tutorial. Also 007 Agent Under Fire and Kingdom Under Fire the Crusaders. I usually only beat RPG's cause they all have interesting story lins or customization options that other games don't have. Beaten KOTOR 1 and 2, Jade Empire in 2 days and Fable in 2 days.
|
Agent under Fire is INSANELY hard if you play Nightfire for a week and try to go back and beat the fire and water mission.

Medium isn't too hard of a step up, once you're used to it. Hard is a big step up, but not as big of a leap as it was on GHII.
My advice for getting better at Easy is to play on Medium for awhile. You'll learn the coordination you'll need for later, and then when you go back to Easy you'll find that you're almost waiting for the notes to hurry up and get there.

I've never understood people who get violent over video games, as in damaging equipment. My cousin gets pissy over missing a note on GH3 and then asks me to repair his controller.

It is clearly faulty equipment and one fails at the game through no fault of their own. Punish the machine.
(I am quite guilty of this.)

The only thing I have broken is a mic for 360. I think I was playing COD3 online.
I'm having trouble beating the last mission. It's not really hard, but tedious. And seeing the fact I am trying to beat it under 30 hours doesn't help either.

Never broken anything, it just makes me want to.
In the past though, 2 hard levels that took me forever to beat:
The junkyard level in 007 on N64
and
The last level in the original Splinter Cell... damn thing took me 3 weeks.

Without a doubt, the hardest game I've ever played was The Thing for the original xbox. There's no way any game should ever be made that hard.
EVER.

helicopter to show up, but I haven't put to much time into it yet.
Just finished finals.

The junkyard level took me a long time too, but the Jungle took me longer. Stupid Xenia........
Recently, I've been working on Halo 3 with a friend of mine. We're playing through the campaign on legendary with all the skulls turned on (except black eye and blind). The first mission took us over 3 hours to complete. It's pretty intense.

That was crazy hard.
I looked through this whole thread to see what I used to think was a hard game, and I didn't even post
Also, any Zelda game kicks the crap out of me for a while until I get it.

the Marines First to Fight close combat game was wicked hard for me, but i did end up beating it.
then Call of Duty 4, I cant beat it. just cant beat it. i started the third hardest difficulty, and havent been able to get passed the SAS sniper mission. infact. i stopped playing missions altogether in that game because of it.

There is no way to get passed the first part. Damn you sega! | I beat that game by sitting there for hours trying to guess the password to the last level. I finally got it.
