I am not against contary posts, but I think it is a waste of my time explaining over and over that these months are to raise awareness to the history that doesnt make it into the history books, not to say one culture is better than another by awarding them a month to celebrate.

Ah, but by giving every race except for Caucasians their own month its like giving everyone a slice of cake because they had something bad happen to them but not giving a slice of cake to the one person who had an average year. Although you arent openly discriminating against him its still hard on that one person. Personally, I say give everyone their own month or do away with the system. Well, men and women both have awareness months and I know there is a trangendered month, so I am not sure who you think is left out and isnt included.

i guess there are enough holidays about certain white people that it almost counts as a month... but as darur said, it's not exactly fair. not that i'd really celebrate, i mean who does? no one i know, at least. it just makes me uneasy, knowing that "we're all equal" yet we are the only race with out a "slice of cake". -------------

And before we begin the endless flow of taunts from the left-wingers out there calling it white man syndrom or whatever the hell their term is, bear in mind we have the same stuff here, though I prefer to call it "poor minority wannabe syndrom". Hawaiians dont need all the help they get, a large group of them need support but the fat hogs at the top take it all. Kamehameha Schools, OHA, they all stand for the well-off Hawaiian that just wants more, the only Hawaiians that need that stuff get nothing. Further more Hawaiians arent discriminated against, were never enslaved and are doing very good. In a place like Hawaii, a White History month would acctually be a good idea. We are talking about a place where the Caucasian race is so greatly underrepresented that a pure Caucasian when asked his ethnicity will say "haoule", or when a hapa person is asked his ethnicity he might say Filipino and hauole". Not to mention the fact that weekly I am called an "<explicit> haoule" (I will allow you to fill in your own word, they all are used) and the only history about us told here is how we "stole the aina". Yeah... Hispanic herritage month. The maya, the Inca, we learned it. If a black person from the ghetto has a herritage of baggy jeans, sean jeans and corn rows, or rolls, or whatever they are called.(my sister used to wear them to job interviews...) Then around here, the hispanic culture is illegle imigration, day labor and having lots of kids they cant pay for.

The fact is, the history if the United states is overwhelmingly filled with white men. White men wrote the Constitution. Every President we've had has been a white man. The overwhelming majority of politicians and political respresentitives in America are you gussed it, white. We have tons of history of whites doing "big things" as far as exploring and discovering. Basically, as far as the history of America goes, the white man has been a focal point all along. Sure, there are many other races that have done big things in American history, but the FACT remains that America, the United States, has a history that is filled with important white people, and not nearly as many important people from other racial backrounds. So, why is it so wrong for them to have 10 months out of the year? It seems proportional to the amount of success the white race has had in our history, so what's the big deal? We have our month for the hispanics, our month for blacks, and the rest of the year is rightfully devoted to the almighty white man. |

Here's my opinion. First there were native americans, we took their land in the beginning. Of course this is the arrival of the white man. Then came the arrival of the black man through slavery. Then came the hispanic american from his country because of political oppression and the like. So you came to our country. You don't deserve a month because of what happened to you back in your country or because of the acccomplishments your people have made. You should be rewarded for an accomplishment regardless of your race. I don't see the need to learn more about the hispanic or african american culture in any class but history. I dont see the need to walk around all february (no joke) with black kids in the hall saying this is my month, respect me... And truth be told it really urks me. You have black entertainment television. You have telemundo and galavision. You live in america, you speak english, you adapt to our culture.
In my dad's workplace there are several muslisms who want a prayer room because they must pray five times a day. This prayer room has to consist of several expensive shrines and must face toward mecca. Now when they talked about building this to make the middle eastern workers more comfortable, my uncle (who also works there) said, " okay i want a room with several top of the line lay-zboy chairs, a big screen TV and a restaurant style drink despenser. Why? Because it represents american culture." And he proceeded to walk out. Its complete BS to adapt to another culture in ours. You come to america you adapt to us. You speak english and you get a job. I dont see the need to give a group of peoples a month out of the year to make them feel good. |

The US doesnt have a culture of its own. US culture is a melting pot of all cultures. We have no one nationality. In france, there are french people, in korea, there are koreans. In the US, we have koreans, chinese, japanese, french poeple, irish people, scotish people, the list goes on and on. And I don't necessarily disagree with that, or with the idea that most of history class will be about white men. But there is a long way from "most" to "all". There have been many worthy contributions by black and hispanic men and women that go untold, and that ain't right. If it takes a dedicated month to fix that, then so be it. Besides, what's the harm? |

This keeps coming up, but this has never been true. You just said how the Native Americans were here first, then the white folk came. Do you speak Navajo? And, of course, white immigrants did everything but adapt. Instead, they gathered in enclaves. That's why you can walk down the streets in NYC and hear Italian, Polish, Norwegian, and other "white" languages spoken, by people whose GRANDPARENTS came here. The "Pennsylvania Dutch" aren't called that because they adapted to mainstream culture. There are parts of Minnesota where Swedish is spoken, 100+ years after anybody came from Sweden. If anything, American history is a story about NOT adapting, but establishing your own identity. |

oh no i completely respect the religious rights and stuff, but these people were trying to get like a $40,000 dollar room when all they really needed was a bedroom sized room that faced mecca and some nice prayer mats. I accept their need to pray but i didnt like how they asked for a shrine that was going to be expensive and unnessesary.

Nah, if you read my post you will see that we seem to be on the same page....I don't see anything wrong with devoting a month to blacks and another to hispanics, because like I said, it seems proportionate to the amount of success/accomplishment they have had in American history in comparison to the white race. The white man has played an overwhelming part in our country's developement, so they get 10 months out the year, while blacks and hispanics get one each. But what about all the other races that have contributed to American history? Isn't it self-centered and downright selfish for the hispanics and blacks to want their month, but not fight for the same rights for Asians and all other races that have played significant roles in our country's history? So, I still haven't been replied to when I say black history month interrupts the history curriculum. How about we just mention who is worth mentioning in history. I don't care if someone made 200 uses for peanuts. Black or white. |

I'm still sonfused on why we can't just learn history as it happened, regardless of race. Sure we can learn about hispanics in mexico, but why not whites in South Dakota? If somethings worth learning, they should teach it in school. Race should not affect it at all. Too bad that the lootings, shootings, and rapings in New Orleans are not all that's going on. In reality, the reason why all this in Louisiana is happening is because, they are black. That's it. Because their black. And worse, they are poor, black, scum. That's how the government views them, so why should they help them. Thank god for all the news channels covering this. They made this horrific act of god known to the world and brought attention upon New Orleans which forced Bush to act, fast.
