What is a triangle?
Its a 3 sided geometrical shape, that no matter how long the sides are,
you will always wind up at the same starting point. When one side of the
triangle changes sizes, the others must compensate.
Now that we got that out of the way, it will be much easier to understand this.
Paintball guns work in a triangle. There are 3 main elements that
effect each other. The bolt, the drive spring, and the air supply(PSI).
In an electro, this would be the HPR, the LPR, and the Dwell.
The perfect balance of the 3 will have you consistently shooting 290fps.
- Guns with Sears. The weight of the bolt and the force of the drive
spring determine how long the valve is held open. The longer the higher
FPS. This will allow you to work at a lower operating pressure. This is
how LP kits work. Polishing your internals lets your bolt travel
faster, and therefor work at a lower pressure.
And RVA works the same. By lessening the spring tension, the bolt
doesn;t hit the valve as hard. This is espeically effective in
Tippmann's because theier velocity screws only block airflow, they
don;t use less air at a lower FPS. RVA's are a good investment, they
will save you air.
-electropneumatics. One quick explanation. Dwell is the measurement in
milliseconds (ms) of how long your solenoid is held open. Lowering your
dwell will mean you have to increase your HPR and LPR pressures. The
lowest my gun will function at is 3ms. Either way a good consistent
velocity will require an equilibrium of the 3. If you can get 2
settings you like, then you can use the remaining to set the velocity.
Dwell isn;t a good one to set your velocity by, as the increments are
too big to set it accuratly. If you have ever heard of ramping
velocities in the NPPL or PSP, thats what the oard is doing, it uses
certain shots at a higher dwell to assure breaks. Quite illegal.
The highest I've ever heard a dwell set at is around 18ms. This will
still allow you to shoot appr 25 bps with an assumed 18ms return time.
The best one to use to tune your velocity is the HPR, it works on a
much larger scale than an LPR. You would want to use your LPR to
ballpark the fps, then use the HPR to fine tune.
AND ALSWAYS ALWAYS shoot a few shots before chronoing to get your reg
set after adjustment, especially if you turn it down. If you turn down
your reg, you still have air on the other side that is at a higher
pressure, You need to shoot to let the pressure come down to what you
want.

With Spool valve markers, Dwell doesn't effect velocity that much.

yup, the dwell works on a very small scale, which is why its better to use the HPR.

nice post. however i do a few things different.
i use the HPR to find the top of the bell (highest FPS i can get) which is the most efficant spot. from this point if you lower your HPR you will lose FPS and if you raise ur HPR you will get fewer FPS. then i use my LPR or main spring to adjust FPS to 280. this way i know my valve is at the most efficant setting it can be at.
shooting a few shots after changing the reg is a good idea but a good reg SHOULD (not always but should) vent the higher PSI out when you turn it down.
that and valve springs add a whole new spectrum of pressure you can run your gun at.

I have a question about the bolt/spring combo.
So when you compress the spring, you store energy in it. Then when the
bolt is launched forward that energy turns into kinetic energy and then
it goes into the valve.
So if you have a heavier bolt, it will go slower, but there is more mass, so it's the same amount of energy.
But if you have a lighter bolt, the bolt will go faster, with less mass, but still the same amount of energy.
However if you have a lighter bolt, it will move faster and kick less,
resulting in a gun which cycles faster and is more accurate
(theoretically). So why are the bolts on Tippmanns so darn heavy!
Has anyone tried modding or drilling out their bolt?

With the LPK the bolt is lighter.
But, you can't use a lighter bolt with a stock 98c valve. It wont be
able to open the valve. But, I understand what you're saying.
Try it and find out.

whats a RVA?(i'm kinda new) and what does a QEV do?

RVA- Rear Velcity Adjuster
QEV- Quick exhust Valve. Its mostly on E-cockers, on ions and on e-bolted 98c.

When Air-Tipps was still around, they had custom rear bolts that were drilled out and machined butter smooth. I think Carrr might still have some around. You'll see him on the forum once in a while...

I'm awaiting an opertunity to get a pressure gauge for my LP 98c. I was seeing some stuff on how to adjust and get the most efficiency out of the thing. Any advice from you guys what I should do to bring my LPK to its full potential 9it would probably help to know that I have an R/T as well and will try to keep running on HPA). Thanks.

You will need LPK RT hoses. Call tippmann and they're hook you up.

yeah, i wish i understood all this. maybe then, i could get the most out of my gun. you guys have this down to a science. so, please do not look down on me when i start asking questions about this as soon as i can start doing a few things to my cus pro.
