I love stuff like that.
Not long ago there was a story about a 72 year old farmer in Africa who killed a panther with his bare hands by dropping his machete and yanking out its tongue. Or the uncle that wrestled that shark to shore to get his nephew's arm back.
I wanted to make a reality show where contestants battled animals in the animal's natural environment. PETA would go nuts, but I'd bet some network would have picked it up.

Shark uncle guy is the badass of the century. Seriously, how gutsy is it to go INTO the ocean to rassle a shark. Big shark, too, with a mouth full of human.
I'm going to have to look up panther guy now.

I heard about the bear attack. I haven't heard about the shark or panther. I'll have to go look it up.

this is why hikers should carry guns. Or at least peppery spray to thwart the bears vision. But seriously, a weapon is a smart thing to have in the woods.

On Svalbard (a couple of islands way way way up North), it is ILLEGAL to leave the city without carrying a high-powered rifle. Too many tourists used to get eaten by polar bears...
:)
EDIT - and in this case, the hikers DID have pepper-spray. Apparently the grizzly liked spicy human.

i carry a military issue knife which ive used many a time to do just about everything but kill. Say, does anybody else enjoy backpacking? And i mean like you and a couple of guys have just backpacks and everything you need in it, knives, GPS and cell phone in case of emergency and you just go out into the woods, and you hike and camp out under the stars and stuff? I think its extremely fun personally.

GPS? That's cheating... Go old school, with compass and map. And no cell phones either.

I live in Montana and that account is slightly different from the way
the local papers told the story when it happened last week. They
indicated that the man and his daughter surprised mama bear and cubs
when they rounded a sharp corner on a narrow mountain trail and they
had no time to react when the bear attacked. They also stated
that the bear smacked them both around until they fell off the trail
and slid approximately 40 feet down a steep cliff. Supposedly,
they were trapped at that location until other hikers came by and heard
their shouts for help.

Predatorr...
Map and compass is the way to go. Cell phone is OK for emergencies, but I don't bring one.
Backpacking out west rocks, especially Philmont. There was one "trail" that was a 45* angle for a mile or so... completely washed out by rain running down it. Doesn't sound too bad, until you throw on a 50lb backpack.
It was worth it when we got to the top though. :)

Your going to love it, whats your itenerary?
I remember when I started on the trail my pack was 50lbs, full food and
water. When I got off the trail I had no food and a quarter of my
water but my bag weighed around 65lbs. The reason was along the
trail I kept adding to my rock collection back home.

When I left camp, my pack was about 35 lbs, including 2 days worth of food...
However, my dad felt the need to bring a whole bunch of extra crap (including his own stove, cooking gear, and coffee), and his was about 60 lbs. About half-way through I ended up taking most of the extra stuff because he was too tired. I was pissed, because I told him not to bring the stuff in the first place.
Darur: Did you go over Big Red? That's the trail I was talking about in my last post.

Nay, we might have gone by it though, not sure. Was it in North or Central Country?
I know we did Black Mountain though, that was a pain.

Acctually when we were at Philmont we went to a camp called Clarks Fork
and when we arrived the rangers told us we were in the bear
hotspot. Apperentally a crew before us had seen two bears doing
things that would put Hades and Dave to shame on the trail just outside
of camp.

Ok, sidetracking to the panther guy.
You drop your gardening tool to reach down the mouth of a charging panther. To rip out its tounge. I can almost understand that. There isn't really another good way to do serious damage to it, you sure can't rip a leg off or anything. But when your gardening tool it a machete?
Hello, stupid. If your fist will fit in its mouth, so will the machete.
