Subject: Future Career?

I'm going to be a highschool history teacher when I graduate from OU here in about 3 years. I haven't decided on rather I'm going straight through to get my masters or stop and get it later after I teach for a while. Teachers make more money with more letters behind their names so I'm kinda leaning on just getting it over with. Thought about eventually getting my doctorate but thats a ways off.....

You?

I'm going for a degree in aerospace engineering. I don't graduate for at least four years. I agree, I'd like to go ahead and get my masters over with. I may Co-Op while I try to get the rest of my degree. I don't know yet, but I've got a little while to decide.

Great school. Best part is all you have to due is graduate High School. So my current Junior and Senior year is going to very easy. But it's a little pricey.

Nah, was partially joking, but in my opinion, the most respected people in the world (to me) are soldiers.

The Marines seem to be an almost higher class of soldier though, and the USMC is very highly regarded around the world.

Perhaps its just me, but knowing a person is/has served in the armed forces puts them a notch above the rest in my eyes.

If you think you're gonna want to get into radio... start now.

It takes most people years and years just to work their way up to a program that runs at like 4 am.

The local Porsche Audi dealer down here (Champion, same as the racing team) doesn't hire from technical schools. The advertise in the local paper from time to time for entry level techs whom they train themselves.

All they require is basic mechanical aptitude, basic tools, and dependability.

If you want to go to a technical school and expect a good job when you graduate, go to aviation mechanics. My cousin studied at Colorado Aero Tech and was hired by Continental upon graduation. The pay scale is more than double what auto mechanic graduates can expect.

You don't have to wait until you get out of high school. The Army has a split option program that will allow you to attend basic training the summer before your senior year.

After graduation you'll attend AIT and be assigned to your particular unit. You'll get your bonus (if one is offered) earlier, if nothing else, you'll make enough money in basic training to buy a car for your senior year.

BTW, law school sucks, as does the field in general. I got my JD, but went on for a degree in education. The pay isn't as spectacular, but one teacher gets as much respect as a room full of lawyers.

I make $34k a year teaching, which is about typical for this state. It's definitely a full time undertaking, but more worthwhile than many other jobs out there.

I received my degree in English from UNM, and my law degree from Western State. I received my degree in education from MDCC in South Florida, not a difficult course with my previous background.

I'm also an Army veteran. With my qualifications the Army payed off the majority of my student loans when I enlisted, and the remainder where deferred.

I've always suffered from not knowing what it is I really want to do in life, so I've tried quite a few different things. I'm not sure if I've found my niche yet, I enjoy the practical side of my job, but not the political side.

I have friends who work in law enforcement, and I've been offered a job with the local department. The pay is a few thousand dollars more a year, with a better pension. Politics still play a part in the job, but not to the same degree one finds in the schools.

I'll be testing with them this week out of curiosity, the written test doesn't seem to be that difficult, and the physical agility test is a joke.

Criminal has three sides:  Prosecutors, judges, and defense lawyers.

Prosecutors are over-worked and (severely) underpaid, but some of them really like their jobs.  Also a good political springboard.

Judges get paid a little more (but not much), and have a pretty darn cool job.  Also a good political springboard.

Defense lawyers are mostly dirt poor.  That's the problem with criminals - they usually don't have a lot of money.  Of course, the very best criminal lawyers do VERY well.

Bottom line - if money is your motivation, stay far away from criminal court.  If you want to be involved in the criminal process for personal reasons, then you can't get much closer to the action.  Many people move between prosecutor, defense, and judge, so you might be able to see every angle...

Justice of the Peace would be an interesting judge position. You do Most class C misdemeanors and suits under 5k, also you get to do inquest (investigation of deaths) and other random things. It would be a neat job to have, you will be in the system but withoout a lot of the stress that comes with higher positions. IT will be harder to get in probably because of the politics, and im not sure but I dont think you have to have a law degree to be a Jp because you can not sentence anyone to jail.
