We'll, I'm back from Parris Island. However, it's three weeks earlier than I should have returned. It's pretty embarassing. I passed everything, did what I was supposed to do quickly, and the drill instructors usually left me alone, however many things in my life changed between the time I joined the delayed entry program and when I shipped, and I was too stupid to re-examine my direction in life. My grandparents who are like a second set of parents to me, never supported the idea, but I went anywayways, even though Grandma's getting alzheimers and Grandpa can barely take care of himself anymore let alone grandma and the house. He had a botched hip replacement that's only put him in more pain and limited what he can do even more than before, that along with his other shoulder wearing out(he can't lift his right arm up very high, he has no rotator cuff). And I've always been close by to help them out. I also received a surprise scholarship to any 4 year state school for scoring high on our state's standardized testing that's required for graduating high school. Then it should have become obvious that my recruiter was a scumbag by talking me into signing for an MOS I never wanted (just until an opening in the MOS I wanted appeared. Then we'll get you what you want ) Then of course, I wouldn't even get that MOS if I didn't graduate on time(flash foreward to coughing up blood on a ten mile hike, while your knee that you didn't really need a waiver for is screaming and your back with scoliosis of only 10 degrees according to what your paperwork says is messed up three weeks later. Wanna go to sick call for the cough? Can you say new MOS, 0311? Complain about your torn up knee or back? Can you say enlistment fraud?). Anywho, between guilt over abandoning my familiy and fear of a fraudulent enlistment discharge when i broke myself on the crucible or ending up with an MOS I really didn't want when I got dropped back for pneumonia, I sucked up my pride and tapped out in about the least embarassing way I could(meaning the platoon didn't have a clue until all my gear was on the quarterdeck getting inventoried) and ended up with a discharge for failure to adapt.

So that's my story. Now I'm a training day 45 washout sitting at home while my friends are at school and my platoon is getting ready for the crucible this week. I also lost my lisence while I was gone. I had Two speeding tickets before the age of 18. I appealed one, but paid it before I got my court date so I could ship on time. Funny how even though I told my recruiter about that ticket it doesn't appear on my police check. Also appearently Grandma developed some sort of nerve deseise brought on by stress(wonder why?) that has paralysed her face. Great homecoming.

So now I guess I'll go to a community college next semester and try to transfer to someplace that doesn't suck as soon as possible. At least now I know how to get stuff done and deal with crappy situations, so playing catch-up shouldn't be too bad.

I'm a tad confused. I've deduced you left for Europe to join some military establishment(which one?) and then, after a large amount of crippling injuries, you decided you couldn't handle it, and came home to a paralyzed grandmother. How close am I to the straight story?

Sorry to hear about all that man, I really am. As my father is so fond of saying "Sometime you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you"

Meaning simply that sometimes our plans don't work out the way we hope. You've still got a shot at having a great future, don't let one negative expierence get you down too much. It happens to many of us at one time or another.

I understand how hard it must be for you to have left that way, but again, its nothing to be ashamed of or angered by. Expierences like this are like knife wounds....they hurt like hell for a while, but they heal eventually and all thats left is the scar and the story.
My uncle washed out of airborne training years ago, and he still made out just fine. Ended up retiring a full bird. The point is that 'washing out' of something like this didnt hamper his overall success, don't let it hamper yours either regardless of wether or not you're in the service.

On a lighter note, I lost your address, thats why I never sent you the PBmissions Picture CD. PM me again and I'll get it out to you ASAP. I felt really guilty about not getting it to you before you left.....you're in quite a few of the shots too.

I'll buy you a beer the next time we meet to sling paint. Just to show that I don't think any less of you, Noone does.

Good luck man.

Well at least I can rest easily that the world is the same today as it was yesterday.

Another conservative uber patriot that ran his mouth about liberals, and then didn't have what it took to serve his country. Rest easily that democracy hating liberals like myself were able to suck up injury and home problems to defend the country that scorns us.

You have a bright future as a conservative talk show host, republican congressman, or Fox News staffer.

Your country salutes you!

Here's a great Rednekk98 quote from the war protestor thread:

As for you 14 year olds who sit around playing video games and munching twinkies all day who suggest things like nuking the whole middle east or just seem to blindly support this war, see how you feel when you're ready to graduate highschool. The people I know who were like that freshman year right after September 11th are more concerned with smoking pot, drinking beer, and getting into a community college than fighting Jihadists. When I try to persuade them into talking with my recruiter, they aren't afraid to tell me so. So when you're looking at graduating, think about reaching down between your legs, grab that string and give it a good strong tug, then enlisting. I doubt more than a handful of you will.

Enjoy your Twinkie, hero.

As least he had the balls to try, but I guess that doesnt mean anything to you guys.

I'm sorry for his misfortune. Everyone tries and fails at some point. But he ran his yap for years about patriotism and service and then decided it wasn't for him and went home when things got tough.

When Dibi, Darur, and Linus realize that talk is cheap and don't want to pay the price of patriotism either, I'll remind them as well.

At least he tried out for the team, that is noble in itself. Under the hat I too had to break bad news to those who had difficulties making it for whatever reason, and made hard choices in young lives.

The military is not for everyone, and not everyone makes it, just like the NFL, dreams of glory fade into reality for many. But to try is over half the battle, not to try is admitting defeat and a lack of personal honor.

Drive on trooper, keep climbing for your dreams in whatever goals you find next.

My God, does the hypocrisy never end?

He gave up because of:

  • grandma
  • a busted knee
  • pneumonia
  • his recruiter lied
  • a new set of goals in life

You, a VN vet and conservative automaton:

  • call bush a hero for dodging the draft and being AWOL
  • call kerry a wuss for his silver star and three purple hearts

I am a liberal freedom hater because I:

  • Made it through basic training with pneumonia and a sinus infection, weighing 159# at graduation (I'm 6'2").
  • Made it through the officer basic course and passed a PT test with achilles tendonitis.
  • Made it through 150 days of rotations at the Combat Manuever Training Center while getting cortisone shots in my foot for Plantar fasciitis.

Keep posting. You keep outdoing yourself.

^^^^ It takes all kinds I guess.

No, you are loyal to a draft dodger who was AWOL. Let's be specific. You were vehemently against a combat vet with a silver star a three purple hearts.

You write and *dreams and stars* speech to a kid who lied to get into the military and then lied to cover his butt upon getting out when he decided it didn't suit him. It seems to me that the thing he does best is lying. Maybe he should try taking responsibility and you and Reb should try not wet-nursing him.

If you are really in the military you will also realize that Kerry was an Officer. And wrote his own citations, or got his buddies to write the citations for him. If you have ever been to a military awards ceremony you know what I am talking about. Every Officer in Battalion get an award, but only 3 enlisted guys do.

Also I have no respect for a Man who comes back from Vietnam while still serving in uniform and publicly disgraces that uniform. Which by the way is against the law.

I also was loyal to an ex peanut farmer, and if Kerry did win, loyalty to country and leader is part of being a soldier. My choice of candidate was based on stance, one stayed the course of his convictions, one could not figure out his convictions day by day. I read "Unfit for Command" and have served under officers with simular personal failings, saw it more than once in 23 years, and the past could and did finally catch up with him in this soldiers mind.

But the final straw was abandoning his brothers still in harms way in Vietnam, for potential personal political gain, that is unforgivable in my world, the troops had little choice but to serve there, to target them in protest, that was the final straw.

Like many have tried to prove ...even on old blue....not one direct personal attack on Clinton.

Like all kids his illusions of grandure ran head first into reality, some make it some don't, but he tried that in itself shows some intestinal fortitude.

I really expected to get smoked harder from OS and the like and for the Smitty's to test the water a bit first to see if they had a convert. Gloat all you want goodsmitty. As hard as you try to piss me off I'll still respect you for serving. I'm not going to disagree with deserving a lot of this for running my mouth, and even moreso for tapping out. I could get into comparing our physical ailments during training, I'm sorry I didn't think it was appropriate to mention the case of cellulitus I developed on my scrotum that had me a few days away from needing surgery to have skin removed, I didn't mentioned how it would open up and bleed right through my trousers even on just the march to the chowhall or how I didn't say jack crap about it to anyone because I didn't want to miss initial drill and screw up half my squad in stack arms. I don't know why you'd bother with the sinus infection, I've had one since about training day 6, as for weight loss, I left being a skinny 5'11" 148lbs at 6.5% body fat. I came back weighing 133lbs after a week in the seperations platoon with plenty of time to eat chow and little physical activity. If you're trying to humiliate me, see just how little what you say matters in the big sceme of my life. You're going to piss off my supporters who'll just piss me off by defending me for tapping out. Guys, I appreciate the support for getting my future straightened out, but save the other stuff. If anybody thinks it took stones to try it, the most difficult thing I did down there was tapping out. I certainly deserve no praise for doing that.

I'm sorry if this thread sounded like I was asking for sympathy. I guess I was too whiney. I was just trying to get a jump on questions as to where I've been or getting congradulations from people who assumed I was back because I made it. So enjoy a little bit less opposition goodsmitty, I've been cut off from what's going on in the world for too long to bother trying to get into a debate about something when I don't have the facts. Also, much to my dissapointment, I believe Hostess has discontinued the Twinkie, but since they're supposed to keep for a decade, if anyone still has some, PM me for my mailing adress.
