Subject: Need Teens Opinion On Cars

HERE'S the problem.  I offered my kid sister (16 years old) my VW Golf Car and promised to fix it up, paint it (her choich on colour), PAY for fuel and Inshurance and take the time to teach her to drive it (cause its stick shift).

Now shes gotten pissed off at me for some reason and i dont know why???  I admmit the car is UGLY and VERY slow and stickshift can be intimidateing whe your a new driver.  BUT i dont carer if she blows the clutch and toasts the trans i can fix it i was trying to be nice and get her on the road as i soo wanted at her age.

The only reason im offering her the car is cause when i was her age my grand father gave me his POS that was falling apart i paid and got it road worthy and drove for a year and was proud as could be to OWN my OWN car.  Now for her my grandfather nor my parents are in a positin finacily or visically to do the same for my sister and i felt bad.

Being as i got a new job ALOT closer to home i figured i can do witout my daily driver and could give it to her for her first car and even fix it up to look half decent.

Her response was basically that its a old POS and not Automatic and is ugly and worthless.

Am i just getting old her or is she NUTS.  Hell free wheels a 16 sounds great to me and though it was a great idea for her. Instead she gets pissed at me and tells me i should get ride of my ugly POS and fix my dads car for her a 200 ford explorer with ALOT of miles (too mutch work needed and i cant afford to do it needs an engine and trans(soon), 4x4 hubs, and some electronic work) not too mention its a pig on fuel and pretty expensive to inshure?

Just wanted some opinions see if maybe im nuts?

Heres a pic of the cr im offering her:

If her other option it to walk, I'd take the car.

I dont think it would look bad hot pink. Any car is better than no car.

Kids are just greedy today. My first ride was a mini van. At least she can get a car.....

It looks alot better than the bashed '71 Pinto I had when I was 16. Tell her not to look a gift horse in the mouth or she'll end up with a bus pass instead.

Her other option is to borrow my moms minivan when she can.

The other thing with my car is its diesel and stinks of diesel when its cold starts but thats out side not in the car.

Glad to see im not the crazy one just guess shes more intrested in the image than a car to call her own?  ah well cheaper for me anywh at least i offered.  Pluse i kinda liked driving that little thing kinda fun and amazing on fuel hehehe i currently go a MONTH on $40 of fuel LOL.

Um its AMAZING on fuel it gets a best of 50mpg and a average of 46-47mpg.  Although its only got 52h and 71lbs/tq its slow but adaqute for even the hiyway gets to 130km/hr (80mph) no problems cause its geared right and really light.

tell your sister (who now sounds like a total jerk in my ears) that this is a means to an end. you sound like a cool guy for giving her a car, and if this is how she treats you, tell her to shove off and buy her own car. you are just trying to do her a favor! anyway, tell her if she really wants another car, she can use that one to get to a job she should be getting soon, and she can use that money to buy a better one. all i can say is im 16 and i would love a car like that.

as for opinions, that car looks pretty clean for what it is. maybe some rims and bodykit, if they exist for it, and maybe a redone interior. how about a performance suspension or exhaust? just some ideas. anything to make more than 52 horses (nitrous is good!).

Dude, shes lucky to have a bro that will do that for her.

I have to buy my first car, pay for insurance and fuel and any of the work that needs to be done that I cant do myself

That car is not that bad, there are no 6 inch rustholes everywere, the paint looks clean. woulnt look bad with grey or black rally stripes. Need a 16 year old brother that rides a motorcycle and likes to work on stuff like engines? Ill take that car off your hands lol

Or beat some sence into her and tell her to pay for her own car, buy insurance, fuel and repairs.

It must be women, seriously. My sister is now 17, and she positively REFUSED to drive this one car that was an excellent deal. Great gas mileage, only 20k miles on the car, and it was some good price. She wouldn't drive it because she deemed it ugly. She ended up paying a load more for a Nissan Altima ('04, I think) and I think she's a fool. Me, I don't plan on getting a car until I'm well into my 20's.

I drove a VW Golf but I had to take over the payments when I did. Mine was newer and had lots of aftermarket on it but they can still be chick cars.

I think everything you have done is very noble. Tell her that she can take the offer as it stands or she can get a job and buy her own car and all that.

My first car was a 98 oldsmobile minivan, then a 98 escort zx2, which my brother so graciously totaled for me, ass, then a 2000 Focus Se, which my dad traded.  now i switch with my dad between a 96 chevy 4x4 (5.0 liter v-8) and a 2005 focus zx4 ST by far my favorite, its a 5-speed 2.4 liter with 165HP, sony sound system, 6 disc in dash cd changer, moonroof, excelent handling, i can take 90 degree turns at 40mph in that thing, hardly even squeeks.  but honestly, id be happy with damn near anything that moves, and doesnt smell like crap wrapped in burning hair.

Yeah in all honestly i like the car LOL.

Even if she dont take it i probly just gona fix it up for my self as a rainy day toy alternative to my truck and motorcycle.  Im a mehcanic for a living so it wont cost me too mutch to fix up.  Turbo,Suspenshion,Wheels,Tires,Upholstry. Propane Pretty mutch build a Diesel GTI

The best thing about this car is its SOOO SIMPLE no powersteering a cable actuated clutch your very connected to the car basically.  Great feel to it.  I feel comvortable pushing this car to the limits in turns and sutch as you have so mutch feel of the limits.  its just a great little cofidence builder.  One of the reasonse i though it would be a good first car.

A good idea is to show her what it looks like when it is all fixed up. Being a mechanic as well perhaps we can bounce ideas back and forth. I know that it's hard for people to see the potential that older cars have, and that they have to SEE what it looks like rather than imagine. Fix the paint with either a Blue or Silver because those colours can go both ways as far as gender is concerned. Maybe do something with the sound system and the wheels because those little plates you call hubcaps are sad.

Yeah i prefer black myself but i may paint it a bright red.  Rims and tires are a MUST but i dont like flasshy rims so id probly opt for a black 5spoke or something (Used of course ).  The turbo is a DEFFINATE down the road but i want to wrk on the apperance and suspenshion performance fisrt as i can get it going just fine on 52hp for now. All in all should be nice and if my sis comes around after it looks all prety like i may be nice and let her BORROW it but at this point i think its gona BE MINE for som time to come i guess her loss.

I was considering selling it and buy a better suited car for her but well thats just being too nice and frankly aint gona happen .

Yeah 5-6 spoke rims always go nice on VWs. I had motegi's on mine and it was a pretty sick ride. It was black, and I agree that black is sweet. A nice vibrant red would be pretty sick too though.

Does she have her G2 yet?

If not, perhaps she will be more appreciative when she needs a car to drive when your parents aren't around.

Personally, I only have my G1, so I have no need for my own car, yet.

Even though, she is definately an ingrate who needs some sense smacked into her.

Currently my sister has a GM1 (automotive & Motorcycle lisence VERY restricted).  She drive with my mother to her school evry day and my mother drives home.

I was luck i got my first car GIVEN too me at 15 befor i could even drive the thing at all (minimum age for g1 (like a permit) is 16 in canada).  I used my saveings (been working since 13) and fixed it to road worthy and a few performace mods  (cost me $2000).  It too was ugly but i loved it and drove it every chance i got (and was left stranded a few times ).

My sister kinda ran into bad timeing and is screwed for a car and although im extreamly pissed at her for basically insulting me  not only for my car but becuase of my preferance of older mehcanical vehicals and isulting my mechanical ability to make an older vehical a reliable driver I cant help but try and see things from the other side.

IN here defence though i guess i aint always the nicest bro (actually pretty rarly am LOL).  And i have had that car sitting on the driveway for the past few months un-used as i been driving the truck and bike all the time and even tried selling it for a while  so it may look as though i trying to pawn it off on her.  BUt in the cars defence for the last week i been driving the car and even started repair the few probs with the car.  Repaired the heater, and exhuast so far, working on the stereo and interior next.  Then next summer comes the body work/paintjob and the rims and tires (maybe springs and shocks then too).

I think after i get it all done my sister will come around and i probly hand over the keys anyways (i keep the pink slip though). She really did get the poopy deal on time when it comes to this family and she is well not entirly car nutz like myself (If it not shiny and "NEW" she dont like it).

Heck she even HATES my truck .  The only vehical of mine she wants keys to is my bike and i keep em with me at ALL TIMES and lock em in my tool box when im at work .

Ah well thanx all for the help trying to understand the mind of a teenage girl (even though its a hopeless cause ).  And to all thous wishing ya had a bro like me i HIGLY doubt that LOL im a mean bugger at times.  AND NO NONE OF YOU CAN HAVE THE CAR Its MY POS for now till that teen girls mind figures out the dumb move it pulled LOL.

It's simple, you sister should be happy to have a car at 16. Some teens, don't even have cars. As for people mentioning adding all this extra crap to it, all it needs is a CD player and a good tune up and it should be fine. Lose all these street racing modification ideas people, money is much better spent elsewhere. I drove 1990 Toyota Corrolla back in 2002 when I was 16, it got me places. That's all that mattered.

I'd drive anything. Then again, I was also driving a '91 Buick Skylark for like...a month. Then my parents gave me my '96 Jimmy. and i'm either getting a VW Bug or the 2000 Dodge Stratus for x-mas.
