Subject: A-5 Velocity Problems

Hi All,
My new A-5, using 3000 psi HPA, can only get my paintballs to between
200 and 250 fps. Most shots are closer to 200 fps than 250.
I use an Edge barrel set, with the paintballs sized to the barrel
back. I removed the ASA from the grip and I mount the air tank
verticaly below tombstone adapter. Everything else is stock.
I have the front velocity adjustor run completely wide open. I have cleaned and oiled all parts several times.
How should I go about correcting this problem?
Should I dump $120 into this gun for a LP kit?
Would I be better off going to a rear velocity adjuster.
My only qualifier is I have to use HPA, CO2 is not an option for me.
Any help would be appreciated.

when you say wide open, what does that mean?
with the FVS, to achieve maximun air flow, resulting in maximun
velosity (FPS) you need to have the FVA flush with the inside of the
powertube. this way, you are not blocking the flow (reduces flow and
velosity) and you don't want to back it out too far, creating a hole
for the air to flow into (this will also slow down the flow and
velosity)
I will suggest a couple of things here before we have to go to the LPK.
the first one will be cheap, if not free...
go and find 1 or 2 bb's. you know, like that you would shoot out of a
bb gun. take the end cap off and pull out the drive pin and drive
spring. where the drive pin goes in to the end cap, there a little
hole. drop the bb's in there. you can fit a max of 2 i believe. but the
drive pin back in, put the spring back on, put the end cap back on.
This will boost you velosity in the same way the RVA does, tension on
the drive spring to push it faster, resulting in faster velosity.
if that doesn't work...
next would be a madman spring kit, they are 10 dollars, look for them
on ebay, they are not making them anymore. you will get three new drive
springs, each with different tensions. the Red spring is the stiffest
and will boost you velosity in the same way the bb's did. add this
springs with or without the bb's. whatever you need to do.
last of all the RVA. i will suggest this because it will allow you have
a better fine tunning of your velosity. you will add and subtract
pressure and tension on you springs, changing the velosity much easier.
when using the RVA, keep the FVA flush with the inside of the powertube
position. this will make it more effecient as well. not much, but every
little bit helps.
good luck. the bb's have always worked for me and people i suggest it to on the field with low velosity problems

Good response Millslane. I support the use of a FVA as well for fine tuning. It appears that going form CO2 to HPA reduces the overall velocity about 50-60 FPS. An HPA will not correct the velocity issue per se assuming you work within the specified range of 300-400 PSI, but make the shot to shot consistency better...

I have the fva adjusted out so that it is flush with the interior of
the power tube. The screw is still in place, it just does not
impede the airflow at all.
Your BB solution got me in the range of 240 fps to 250 fps. I'm
on the right track. I'll order up some springs and a RVA.
If I have to purchase a low pressure kit for my A-5, I think I'll
consider selling the a-5 and find a marker that can shoot near 300 fps
using hpa right out of the box.
Thanks for the help.

well, glad to hear you got some velosity back, is that with 1 bb or 2?
you can fit two in there is needed.
another item that will maximize your air flow is to pick up the JCS
Gold Powertube. this powertube has no FVA, no hole. so it really
maximizes the velosity and would really be considered wide open. this
would probably be good for a few more FPS. its around 35 bucks or so,
before shipping.
i have a feeling that the springs will do it though, make sure you install then correctly, instructions are on the package.

Actually, I didn't use BB's. I shaved down a pencil eraser to the
diameter of the hole the spring pin fits into. It may be about
3/8" high.
I called Tippmann, and they said they would send me out a stiffer spring at no charge.
Thanks for the help.

The red spring of the Maddmann spring set did the trick.
Thank you all for your help.
