Yeah that's right. With my trip down to Myrtle Beach i stumbled apon a
Pet Store and they had a HUGE snake selection. They also had moniters,
and other assortments of lizards, scorpions, and terranchillas (sp)
In the end I picked out a beautiful female Ball Python.
The guy who worked in the reptile area said she was 3, but my friend
and I beg to differ, we think 2ish. I didn't buy a baby one because
they can get sick easilly....ect.
She's around 2.5 feet long right now, i'll get a more accurate measurement tomorow.
She's in a 10 gallon terririum right now, that was just for traveling
from the beach back home and tomorow after school i'm going out and
getting a 25 gallon one and getting a half log, and some other goodies
for her.
She's very friendly, and loves to be out of her cage.

Theres a pic of her chillin in the terrirrium i'll get better pics when she's in her new habitat tomorow.

If the snake was a guy i'd name it Jim, after the great Jim Morrison, but she's a girl.....
So my family and I thought of Gem, like a rock, which is pronounced like Jim but.....more lady like?
Not sure if i like Gem or not, that's what everyone is calling her though.....

A ball python wont kill you it wont constrict you unless it wanted to eat you which your to big even a new born infant is to big for an adult ball python and its not venomous so 100 bites wont kill you
And at 2.5 feet she should be on bigger then small mice my 3.5 foot male ball is eating medium rats
You seem to know what your doin with the snake not keeping it in the 10 gallon shows that but ball pythons can be problem feeders and are known for giving new snake owners trouble so if you have any questions feel free to ask ive dealt with 1 for 3 years

Well. I almost did it without their approval, when i got back to where
we were staying, i told my mom and she basically said no, but since my
cousins and my aunt were with us, they talked her into it.
The first time my mom held the snake she was FREAKING out, it was the funniest thing i've seen in a while.

As for unconventional pets, I have a scorpion, it is the worst pet in history besides possibly that ugly pleckostomus(sp? it's one of those ugly fish that eat slime)I had. I occasionally poke it with something just to make sure it's still alive. My mom would never allow me to buy a snake, especially one that gets big, but I had a few garter snakes for the duration of the summer and fed them frogs, which was amusing. They were anything but "problem feeders". They'd eat a good sized frog every three days, in fact, I brought one into school and fed it in front of the class. Talk about an education. Also, now that I probably could get a snake, I'd feel guilty since my sister has a pet rat, which is one of the coolest unconventional pets we've ever had. I'd have to say it's smarter than the dog and more affectionate that the cats. However it hates all other living creaures besides humans. It will attack the cats at any opportunity, then go hide in my sister's purse. It really likes beer, and peppermint schnapps. It even ate half a joint once and we thought it was going to die.

i used to have snakes. but, my mom would "feel sorry for them" and feed them something behind my back and deliberately leave the lid cracked for "more ventilation for the poor thing," and it would escape. now, reptiles are my third obsession, and i know what i was doing. now im not allowed to have snakes because mom says "they always get out." it really makes me mad...

pets are fun.
right now i have a 44gallon aquarium with about 12 fish in it and live plants. it is very good looking but i need to get a better filtration and more lighting for the plants. i also have to get a new CO2 tank for it as well.
i also have an iraqi sand gecko which is really cool. about and inch and half long and every time you touch it, the damn thing squeeks and runs off. then i have two lepoard gekcos which are perhaps the best lizards. they are calm and just sit right on your hand. i have a spiny tailed iguana with the geckos too, and i am going to be building a huge cage for them outside. should be fun.
i also have a california king snake and she is always hungry. i have to feed her two fuzzys at a time right now cuz she isn't big enough for hoppers. very good snake though. i really want an emerald tree boa but they cost about $700 right now. beautiful snakes though.
ball pythons are not aggressive. reticulated pythons though are some aggressive species though. known to climb trees to get pray. they also grow over 10ft and i think they might be the largest of the constrictors. there is a couple of stores in Az that sell anacondas. the yellow ones though, not the green. but those snakes are perhaps the ugliest of all snakes.

You are calling a bloody reptile sweet!
All that drives it is hunger, it feel hot, it feels cold, it acts acordingly, its hungry it hunts, it has no concept of leasure, pleasure, love. When you call it sweet, its you trying to recognize some human quality in one of the most base organisms on the planet.
Its you looking for similiarities, its no different from seeing a cloud shapped like a shoe, or a rabbit or what have you. Its you making something seem real that simply isnt there in an effort to, in the words of melvile, personify a dumb brutish animal.

Which it won't, since boas don't choke their prey. They are constrictors, not chokers...
But otherwise I'm with dbib - your snake is barely smarter than the log "she" sleeps in. A pet that is quite literally as dumb as a log and only moves twice a day isn't very exciting. Even fish make better pets than snakes.

First of all snakes are smarter then they may appear if you read any articles before opening your mouth youd know that..
Second just because it isent fluffy and doesnt bark keeping you awake at night or use your carpet as the toilet doesnt mean its not cute
And before I see any of that my dogs better then your snake or my ferrets way cooler just remember my pet (and metallicas) can eat your pet...

It is a reptile, of the snake family. Therefor, its almost braindead, the reptilian brain operates on basicaly two levels, hunger and the desire to mate. Thats all there is to it.

Sure, snakes are cute - so are the throwpillows my wife insists on putting on our bed. Doesn't make them good pets either.
And before I see any of that my dogs better then your snake or my ferrets way cooler just remember my pet (and metallicas) can eat your pet... |
And therein lies the real issue - snake owners derive some vicarious badness by possessing what they believe is a dangerous animal, despite the fact that your average cat is much more dangerous to humans than a boa.
And hey - if it makes you happy to have your little pet log, go nuts.

I cant expect you to understand until you own one nearly all my friends were the same thought i was crazy when i thought about gettin a snake cause all it does is "lay around" till they held it their very cool in other ways and are very unique 2 of my snakes are comfortable around anyone the other is aggressive if anyone but me holds her ones not 2 are aggressive eaters the others not..just cause it doesnt wag its tail to show when its happy or bark to let you know its hungry doesnt mean it doesnt have a personality just takes someone who actually knows what their talking about to see that

I'm going to agree that snakes, and most reptiles for that matter, are usually boring when they aren't eating something. My tiger oscar probably made a better pet and seemed to have the capacity to recognize me(it would go frantic when I entered the room, hoping I had some goldfish for it) however, boas and pythons are pretty interesting to handle, because they just chill out. At least snakes are smarter than my scorpion, but then again, my scorpion didn't cost $100.

from the description you posted it sounds like 1 of 2 snakes. if it is a california king snake then it can pocess those marking which make it non-venoums. if the snake was a coral snake then that is a dangerous snake. the two snakes look almost identicle except the fact of which color starts first.
reptiles have out lived every known species of animal on this planet. the only thing that comes close to being that far along is bacteria, fungi, plants and fish. they will outlive the human race...so does a animal need to be smart?

same family as king snakes different color markings.
"red touch yellow, kill a fellow; red touch black, friend of Jack"
coral snake

king snake

milk/corn snake

interesting is the fact that all milk/corn snakes have similar markings as the king snake, there are some that look like coral snakes and some that are pure black
