Well, I'm getting kinda sick of the irony of smokers usuing the stairwell just outside the Student activities room (home of student government) and out of frustration I proposed to the Student Activities Coordintor that we set-up a relativly good webcam in a nook in the wall that would give us a good view of smokers as well as make the camera difficult to spot (I was thinking of covering all but the lens with plywood and possibly a lexan sheild over the lens and use either a few 16ft USB cables connected, although I'm not sure that would work, or WLAN to hook it up to the computer in the room, an Apple G5).

Does anyone know of a good model that we can use at least up to 50 feet away from the actual computer or am I asking for a miricle? Thanks in advance for any help!

There are a billion stairwells, this is probably the dumbest one they could choose

Seriously, its a pain in the ass to avoid their spit, choke on all the second hand smoke and push my way through them when I need to get up there. If they insist on smoking why dont they show a little courtasy and use a less used stairwell?

put a propane tank in the stairwell and open the valve...problem solved...make sure you keep the tank hidden though so they can't see it

I could care less that they break the rules, its just the lack of respect. Students going through that stairwell have every right too, they shouldnt have to detour just because people want to smoke and gamble and the like. Its not just holding your breath, they glare and often threaten people that come through. If they choose a place more friendly to the rest of the school then I'd be fine with it.

Oy vey, just get a freakin' camera and take a pic of em as they're smoking. its much easier than settin up a webcam and a lot less expensive. or if u dont want to nark em... well i dont know wat to say

This, also, has gone from an old woman with sand in her ... nevermind... whining about something that isn't really her business, to the above stated continuing to whine about something that isn't really her business, and if I'm reading this correctly (you never know when you have your computer monitor upside down), it's hasn't seemed to have stopped.

So I'm assuming you guys smoke, that's why you don't mind breathing smoke?
Honestly, I don't like having to choke on someone else's smoke because they have to smoke--an addiction that is pernicious, and illegal for minors.
Breathing in that smoke and choking on it just bugs the hell out of me--I'm shocked to consider that you think it's better for him to hold his breath while he goes up the stairs (a few seconds... Try 20...) instead of them finding somewhere else to smoke.

Honestly, I've no tolerance for law-breakers. Under-age smokers/drinkers, substance abusers, thieves, etc.

He said it's inconveniencing him, so he's doing something to resolve that issue--what's the big issue here where you guys have to whine and complain like 13 year olds who think Scott is condemning smokers.
So I'm assuming that smoking your favorite thing to do to take your mind off of whatever the issue is, or maybe just to feel good?

But anyway. You arent allowed to smoke in any government buildings anymore. They are breaking the law reguardless of their age.

Just tell an administrator, have them walk in when they are smoking. Problem solved.

They shouldnt be able to do this, grown men and women cant do this who have an actual right to smoke.

NY state law there's no smoking age...if a cop finds kids smoking there's nothing they can do about it...it's only illegal for someone to sell cigarettes to minors

If you really are just trying to scare them away, put up an obvious camera that doesn't even attach to anything.
It'll scare them away, and they won't get in trouble.

The only reason you'd need a hidden camera is to narc on people. If you do that, I have lost all respect for you.
Narcs are the lowest form of life in my book.

Hah. The replies in this thread are dumb...

I have a better solution. Instead of setting up a cam, how about urinating as often as you can in that stairwell. Before school, during, and after. Evenuatly there will be enough amonia built up, the stench will be so great, they will not want to hang out there.

When I was living in a college dorm years ago, the smokers in my building would always smoke directly underneath my window 4 stories below. Since I always had the windows open the smoke would filter up to my room. They got the message to move after getting buckets of water dumped on them numberous times....

I don't know anything about digital cameras so i won't be much use here.

I have to say though that as a smoker i would not appreciate somebody taking pictures of me in order to try and "tattle" on me. I do however appreciate the position these anti social smokers have put you in. I think i should warn you that these people may take a sudden disliking to you so you should be careful what your doing.

Not around here. I've known plenty of people under 18 that have been given tickets for smoking. In fact, my cousin narrowly avoided violating his probation when a cop caught him smoking once.
