Im getting a computer for my 16th birthday. Im thinking I'll want a laptop since I do alot of home recording and such and that would be much easier. But I will also still want one capable of playing new end games. I think my price range ends at around 1000 dollors. Any suggestions?

Wow you are young.
If you are into home recording:
http://www.Apple.com - www.Apple.com
http://www.MacMall.com - www.MacMall.com
To get somthing good your going to need to go up a little on the $1000 range, but it will be worth it. Macs are better at everything in media.
Maybe save up for a while.
I am getting a Powerbook here soon for college.

Most new games are ported to both Mac and PC. You may not be able to run down to your local Target and buy the Mac version, you may need to order it online, but the games are there yes.

Really?? Well whichever you choose, you're not gonna get a gaming powerhouse for $1000. Get something with a separate graphics processor, and you'll at least be able to play today's games. (I'm not sure if this is the same for macs). Whatever you do, you're gonna want to budget in a nice external sound card that has some inputs, and that's gonna be costly... do you have the option of upgrading a current computer?

There's the trouble with macs. Great for video editing, picture editing, and recording. The downside is there isn't that game part of the computer you want. Macs have some games, but not as many as a windows pc.

I don't know what games you are going to play with 32mb of video memory. The only Apple laptop under 1000 is the base iBook with
ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
32MB DDR video memory.
What kind of games do you want to play?

If you think you could build a computer then I would go with newegg or tigerdirect and if you want to buy a cheap desktop maybe ibuypower or a used Dell.

New Dell XPS 400 2.8 GHZ Dual Core Intel 512mb memory 256 Mb X600 Keyboard + Mouse Dell XPS warranty 80gb hard drive (7200RPM_) Windows Media Center Edition 17 Inch Ultra sharp LCD 12ms response Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW Drive $908.10 (New)

Did the same on ibuypower and was 100 more and it didnt have 15 months of free anti virus and windows media center. Albeit, it had a Intel® Pentium-D Processor 920 compared to Dell's Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology

not to mention dell's craptastic support.
sammy, there's more to a comp than just those numbers... how about what brand/speed of RAM, why a small hard drive? what type of mouse... i just bought a new logitech laser mouse for gaming, i must say it made a big difference.

I'm pretty sure Dell's support is longer in India, and the XPS has different support. 512MB DDR2-667 PC5300 Memory (Ibuypower) 512MB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 2DIMM (Dell)
Both were 7200RPM 80gbs. I figured that would be a good size for a computer around 800 dollars.
Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.1A USB Internet Mouse
Beige
(ibuypwer) Dell® 2-button USB mouse
They both offer new mouses, didn't bother adding them. I don't believe Dell is the best in the world but I think it might be a good option for a under 1000 dollar basic pc.

How about DellAuction.com for a refurbished one? It's through Dell, I think you still get warranties and stuff, and refurbished parts are tested with higher standards than normal parts. You might be able to save a lot of cash.
And to all you Dell haters, is there any laptop you would suggest besides a mac?

If you are really looking into recording with the machine, then you should really concentrate more on a machine with a good sound card.

New Dell XPS 400 For one, it's a Dell 2.8 GHZ Dual Core Intel For two, it's an Intel LGA 775 heat trap, and there is only 1 game I know of that can take advantage of dual core, you're better off spending more money on a better video card 512mb memory Most games need 1 GB of RAM to run smooth 256 Mb X600 It's a last generation card, and a low end one at that Keyboard + Mouse Dell XPS warranty You'll probly never use this, and if you do, good luck with it 80gb hard drive (7200RPM_) Too small Windows Media Center Edition 17 Inch Ultra sharp LCD 12ms response Hyunai monitors are better Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW Drive You only need one drive $908.10 (New)

Did the same on ibuypower and was 100 more and it didnt have 15 months of free anti virus and windows media center. Albeit, it had a Intel® Pentium-D Processor 920 compared to Dell's Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology
|
Right now on newegg, I made a computer with:
Lite-On DVD-RW/CD-RW burner (These have gained a great reputation for quality,
the PC repair place I work at only sells these now they like them so much)
AMD Athlon 3200+ Socket 939 (I have this CPU, uses far less power and puts out
far less heat than an Intel chip, and dual core isn't good for much more than
bragging rights with current games)
Dual channel 1GB RAM kit (DDR400, Mushkin value line)
Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive (Which is still a little on the small side
IMO. I have a 200GB and a 120GB, so I might just be used to having too much
space, lol)
Hyundai B70A flat panel (I have one myself, it's a very good monitor for the
price. Like the DVD drive, the place I work at likes these so much it's all
they sell unless the customer really wants something else)
XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB (unless you get a 6800 or higher, you don't need
256MB. I had a 6600GT in my comp for awhile and got over 8000 on 3d mark 03,
when I OC'd the card I got to over 9000)
MSI K8N Neo 4 nForce 4 Motherboard Socket 939 (I have this mobo, it's works
great, you can overclock it while in windows)
Whatever case and power supply combo you want (You could easily use a 350 watt
power supply in this computer, I'm running a 380 watt right now)
Windows XP Home with SP2 OEM
That computer would run circles around the dell, and it comes in at $908.89.
For the anti-virus, get AVG Free anti virus, works just as good as norton, and
it's free. All the parts have either warrantees with newegg or through the
manufacturer.
Since untill about two weeks ago my computer had mostly the same parts in it, I can say for sure that this setup can run F.E.A.R. at 1024 x 768 on medium-low settings, and Half-Life 2 can run at 1024 x 768 at max settings, or 1280 x 1024 at medium settings.
If you really must have a dual core CPU, you can drop the HD down to an 80GB, drop the RAM down to 512MB, get a cheaper mobo, and get a CD-RW/ DVD ROM instead of a DVD burner, and replace the 3200+ with an Athlon 64 X2 3800+, the total then is 995.40, it will still outperform the dell, but it would probly game worse with 512 RAM and a dual core CPU than it would with 1GB of RAM and the 3200+. Personally I would take the single core CPU and upgrade it to a dual core a year or two down the road when they don't cost so much more than a single core CPU.
Just the opinon of me and the people I work with.
