Well I played this weekend finaly after having this gun for a little over 2 weeks. There was 2 other A-5s there along with mine we all had R/Ts. We went through gas like crazy. I averaged close to a thousand balls on 2 20oz. tanks. One of the other guys ran out quick with his 68 ci. tank he shot close to 500 rounds. We all had our tanks full before playing. The spyders that were there were still gased and ready to go even the guy with the 14oz tank. He fired many shots and lasted all 8 games. I never relized how much air the feed system and R/t was going to use when purchasing this gun. I'm waiting for my barrel kit to come UPS so I can definatly replace the flatline. Shooting between trees about 50 feet away and about a foot apart was next to impossible. I also would like to mention the other guy who played with his A-5 showed up late and was there only for the last three games but nearly used up his 20oz. tank. I'll give him props for his palmer stabilizer and his Endgame supression barrel. Wow that was one quiet barrel and the accuracy was great too.

I guess the question is any feedback on gas efficency or is the A-5 just a Gas hog and thats that.

Some people get great efficinency from their A-5s, others, like yourself, get terrible efficiency.

Both the R/T and Cyclone use blowback air. So that's not whats causing you problems. But Tippmanns are just overall gas hogs.

1000 shots from a 20oz CO2 isn't really bad for an A-5. 500 off a 68ci isn't great(below average for a 300psi tank, really bad for a 4500psi) but your gas usage could be from many factors. Since they have RT's, chances are good you're shooting faster, and with CO2 this leads to worse efficiency. You could probably get better efficiency with a reg. I'm guessing the guy with the spyder probably didn't fire as much as you guys did, or he had upgraded the gun quite a bit.

No, it's not... Too bad he said from (2) 20 oz.'s. Heck, if I get 1000 from a 20oz. on my 98c, I'm happy. But 500 from (1), that's not good, not good at all.

Air hogs are flying airplanes pumped up by air.

Your A-5 is definatly not an air hog.

The A-5 has always been a bit of a gas hog.  It improves a bit the longer you use it but not by much.  That's why I got a 20# siphon tank and fill my own...  For $12 I can fill my 20# tank at the local welding shop and then fill my own 20oz. tanks off of that.  Saves a TON of money.

well... paintball guns useing more gas than other paintball gun... my theory is this:
1.you shoot more
2.velocity
either of these has a factor in the amount of air you use... even though with the flatline it takes more air to push the paintball out of the barrel b/c of the curved nature of the barrel... you have many things to look at... what was your velocity?? with the flatline, if you have the velocity above 265 it shoots like crap... my velocity on mine is at 260 and it shoots great and i get about 750 per 20oz tank... i have a flatline, and a new bolt and powertube...
p.s. the cyclone feed system uses the excess gas from the blowback of the hammer i thought>...and i never liked the response....

Doesn't a tippmann use the same amount of gas regardless of cyclone, rt, and velocity settings when the gun is mostly stock?

I mean, the velocity screw disrupts the flow, it doesn't allow less gas to go through the marker...

ANYWAYS, polish your internals and see if it helps.  Also, if it was cold when you were playing, you'll get less shots.  Another thing, unless you fill your own tank, you can't be sure if it is filled all the way.  Many paintball fields underfill tanks just because they don't care.  That may be the reason why your friend's air tank ran out quickly too.

You might also want to check for small air leaks with some soapy water solution.

Correct, no matter what your velocity is set at your using the same amount of gas.

I'ld have to disagree, more velocity = higher rate of gas usage. It's just simple physics. The same goes for the cyclon and RT. Yes, they use "blowback gas", but this has to come from somewhere. If you set your velocity at 280 with the RT and cyclone connected then install the shutoff plug your velocity will increase. The gas has to go somewhere, and some of it is heading out the barrel. As for the A-5, it is historically a high gas user. There are things you can do to reduce this, such as polishing the internals, expansion chamber and anti-siphoned tank.  Contrary to some peoples opinion, CA does not improve efficiency, only velocity stability.

What are you talking about (more velocity = higher usage). This is true on any marker except a Tippmann ( i think tippmanns are the only ones). Most markers adjust the amount of air flowing through. Tippmanns dont. They disrupt the air flowing through the power tube. Thats what the velocity screw does. Next time your going to write something, make sure you know what your talking about. Also, the RT and Cylcone do NOT use more gas. They use gas thats already coming out of the powertube. The gas pushes the ball through the barrel, but it doesnt disappear. the gas that remains in the chamber/powertube goes through the gas line into your RT and Cyclone.

Next time, do some research. It will go a long way.

I'm pretty sure that the flow of air has almost nothing to do with physics.

Second of all, you are wrong when this subject is applied to regular Tippmanns.

Actually air flow is all about physics.  But otherwise absolutly correct in reguard to Tippmann markers.

RT+CO2 = bad efficiency.  When shooting at high rates of fire your efficiency drops with CO2.  This can be helped with x-chambers, regulators, remotes, etc., but shooting fast with CO2 will always reduce efficiency.

If you plan on shooting fast forever, you should look into nitro.

You might consider getting an expansion chamber and remote line if you want to conserve your gas.  you're gonna pick up some of the liquid CO2 when your tank's horizontal.  The expansion chamber and remote line will help minimize that.
