In school they are doing these 10 minute things for the whole
month about the greatness of black people. Today they talked
abotu what life would be like without black people. Now, do we
really need to lose 10 minutes of school just so we could talk about
how "awesome" black people are? |

at my school today they gave out little known black history facts most where about black judges... if i was black i'd be happy about that. Tae can u give examples of when these other times are so i may promote them? |

Oh cmon... But seriously, and without being racist, could anyone compile a list of great accomplishments by black people? Like invented things (other than 100 uses for peanuts), or... something like that? I'm asking out of curiosity, not to be scornful, but I don't see the point of black history month. Does anyone have the story behind when it was implemented and why? I mean, there's a whole lot of other civilizations/cultures that are far more interesting that aren't ever touched on. ------------- Tenacious and Versatile |

Oh for christs sake....that was freakin' 200 years ago...there has been prejudice for almost every group currently living in this nation at one time or another, it's just that the country showed up too late to see most of them enslaved. If you go back far enough like anyone who wasn't Roman were subject to slavery, but we don't have to harp on that all the time. And like someone else said, the Jews don't have to have a month dedicated to them and they've been repressed and pushed into slavery and genocided for the past 3000 years on and off....Crap they're still openly hated by a large segment of the world. And don't get me started with the Native Americans. The the freakin Indians had their entire culture destroyed, lands taken, were enslaved, had a continuous genocide committed on them for about 400 years and had to live through about 50 years of Cowboy and Indian movies and you don't see them getting all self righteous all the time....Call me racist or whatever but I seriously think that black people, as a whole and as a culture, need to get over themselves. You can either have a colorblind world that doesn't descriminate or hate people because of ethnicity or you can have a world where all, or some, of the different ethnic groups have to have their butts kissed all the time for stuff the other groups did to them before....You can't have it both ways and racism is racism no matter what color the racist is. ------------- |

I realise what black people went through and yes it was a sad terrible thing that shouldent of happend and weve learned about martin luther king and all that but I dont and never have owned a slave I never did anything to those black people and could honostly care less about it now... -------------

I didn't think I could get clearer, but yeah, I'm looking for accomplishments. I'm not sayign they all huddled together, I'm just saying that the claim of inventing gunpowder lies with the chinese. So why don't we have Chinese history month, or Roman history month so that we can recognize one of the biggest most successful (till it failed) empires in the world? I didn't realize that an entire race of people had to earn the right to have their history be taught in school. Even if no black person in history ever invented anything, never held high office, and never scored 100 points in a basketball game, black culture is a significant, and therefore important, part of American culture. History class is not about keeping score - it is about learning about the past. Blacks are part of the American past, therefore we should learn about them. While arguments can be made for and against the value of black history month, it strikes me as entirely obvious that black history should be taught in schools. Hopefully we could eventually stop labeling it "black history", but that may be necessary until actual black history is actually taught on a regular basis. |

I dont really have a problem with black history month i have a more "meh" attitude about it. But year after year, and yes after year we are never taught anything new about black history month, or even anything new about the same 4 blacks we learn about. It really gets old and that been there done that feeling, it doesnt really bring any more acknowlegdement to black history month. Almost like there was only 4 heavy hitters.
