I need help with a good camcorder. I am looking for something like a sony Handycam, at least something that records to dvds or mini dvs, or a digital camcorder.

It needs to be a resiliant camera. I almost feel like getting a sport type camera because I need to use it for outdoor activities and in particular a trip I am going on this spring to the middle east.

Suggestions. Possible something with an independent lense . . .

Price range is really about 500.

Right now I just found http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7035594&productCategoryId=cat04015&type=product&tab=1&id=1112808020948 - this
Anyone have experience with this camcorder?

No, it's not a good camcorder. Go with a mini DV camcorder.

That one that you linked might be good depending on what you're gonna do with it. I read a review of it in Maximum PC. They say the quality is middle of the line. It won't hold a lot of footage, so you're gonna need a computer to transfer the video too. It uses flash memory, so there won't be many moving parts, which would be good for skiing or something like that.

If you're gonna make a movie for something besides posting on the internet though (like if you want to make a nice DVD), you might want to look elsewhere.
