I'm a civilian but I'm in the Army's ROTC program, so I'm future military. I voted myself civilian, because I'm not in yet.

Former Army here. Cavalry Scout (19D). Trouble is, my battalion commander seemed to think us Scouts were more "live bait" than "intel gatherers". Yikes.

Same here...
I was active from 84-90. 1st/75th & 2nd/325th...
Glad to see I am not the only medic...I never tabbed qualified but I did attend 300F1. 22 weeks at sunny Fort Sam and them "med" lab at Fort Bragg.
Set me up nice for my career as a ER/ICU nurse.
Ranger class 2-86...before they decided that medics didn't "need" Ranger school.

No I think the sucking thing must have been a part of the Navy corpsman manual....we didn't have that chapter in our book.
I'm joking some of the best medics in the military are Navy Corpsman...the Independant Duty corpsman I trained with were top notch.

But to seriously answer your question:
The medics in the Ranger Battalions now all attend RIP but do not go to Ranger school. Ranger school is an infantry leadership school...not necessary to be a good medic.
But: Back when OS and I were slogging around the battalions....the black and gold tab made the guys around you feel a bit more confident about the medic.

We had some 91's attached to our platoon on a rotating basis. Meaning they'd hang with us, requal as 19D's, then we'd need another set of medics. We got some really crazy medics for a while... these guys wanted to be gunslingers more than anything else.

Finally wound up with a couple guys who would hang out in the medic track, and periodically tell us to "drink water". They didn't get nearly the respect the other guys did. Meaning, they didn't drink with us EVER.

Wow..what a shame. My guys and I we're tight. I still talk to some of them. But I know what you mean...my unit was full of good medics. We knew our place...and it certainly wasn't to be a primary shooter. My job was to take care of the men...and if that included being a shooter, I had the training and the motivation to be effective. Just wasn't my primary responsibility. "Sometimes, the most effective treatment for an injury is to eliminate the cause of the injury"...I learned that from someone, somewhere along the lines, and it still makes sense.
P.S. I never had a medic "track"...I pounded the same ground as my guys, once we hit the ground. I think that may be a reason we were tight.

Our platoon was one of the last of the M-113/M-901 era. Shortly before I traded in my pickle suit, we transitioned to Humvees. Originally, our nominal vehicle setup was 3 M-113A2, 3 M-901, 1 medic M-113. The early medics were great guys, and one of them went to the M-60 competition with one of our scouts, too. Real soldiers, perfectly willing to patrol, shoot, drink, you name it. Those later guys were more the product of a zero-defect environment that not many of us stuck around for.

I still have a standing offer with the Army - get me a commission as an O-4, and I'll come back. Alternately, I'd love to run an all-volunteer training tool unit made up of former service people of varying ages and genders. I doubt they'll take me up on either one of those, though!

My unit had FLAs but they were the old Gamma Goats. 6 Wheel drive pieces of crap. We had those because they were air deliverable. Heavy dropping a goat is an exercise that is a ton of work and not a lot of fun.
When I was about 6 months short we got a HMMV utility but they had not yet developed the 2 litter version that was air deliverable that they have now.
I was lucky enough to be assigned to a line company, so I didn't do much motor pool duty.
As a line medic we got to participate in all the training the grunts did. We marched along with them on the EIB 12 milers, JOTC in Panama, Sniper selection, Machine gun leaders course...all the fun stuff that people join up to do.
And as a medic, when we were off mission cycle...we got to attend school. The grunts did post support activities(i.e. painting rocks in mil-speak). While they did that I went to paramedic school, ACLS, BTLS, and I even got my EMS instructors certification, all of which I still maintain.
"Shoot'em full of holes, and fill'em full of ringers"...the mantra of the Airborne/Ranger Medic.

I sure miss old Joe Snuffy from the old forum....he and I used to BS about all this ancient history stuff "back in the day"
Edit:
And about that commission as a Major...that would be nice. I have a buddy in Bethesda that was a medic in my unit, went to PA school, intially a WO, now a commissioned 0-4, he works out of DC in charge of the Tactical EMS course for CONTOMS ( Counter Narcotics & Terrorism Operational Medical Support). So...there is always a chance at that commission.

Just remember that as an officer you aren't 'better than' or 'above' the troops - you command them, and if your'e really lucky and skilled, they'll respect you as a leader.

Treat the troops as the professionals they are and you'll do just fine. You're a smart, reasonable guy, but so are they. I've seena  lot of officers who thought they were on a higher level because of their commission. It's not the days of scum and gentlemen anymore.

Thor, I'll be damned. Are you with JSR or 2EW? Or one of the other units? Just that I was in Kingston and spent my first year in the 'Mo-lish down here, and am well familiar with CFB Kingston. I'm in town this weekend visiting family, coincidentally. Yeah, we're just reservbes, but some of us take our jobs seriously and try to get the msot out of the training. I'm looking at taking a tour after school, probably the August-Feb roto in 2010, or maybe the feb-Aug '09 roto if I can get into the selection during my lazst year of school. So yeah, I'm not one of those reservists just doing it for the cash.
