Topic: My A5 and 1200 Round Hopper/Backpack
Posted By: turtle
Subject: My A5 and 1200 Round Hopper/Backpack
Date Posted: 28 February 2006 at 1:39pm

This is my A5, and Backpack.  The back holds 1200 rounds and loads a small Hopper similar to the size of a TacCap. The cap has an Electronic Eye so the balls stop feeding when it's full.

My freinds hate playin on the oppsite team because I can keep 3 to 4 guys pinned down. I never have to reload  .

I am considering manufacturing these so the big question is;  would you buy one,  and how much do you think it should cost?  I am looking for honest feedback.

*EDIT OK I loaded a VERY Short video showing the comming out of the hopper and me firing a few rounds.  I will do a better one as soon as I can.  www.turtlebackpack.com

EDIT 3-13-2006  I have removed most of the pictures from the forum. It was sucking a lot of bandwith. You can still see the pictures and video on the web site.

It all started here and the Pack is now on over 15 fourms.

Thanks

Sorry the pic's are so big.  This is my first post normally I am in the garage inventing stuff.

The system isnt that heavy by itself only 4.5 pounds.  The weight is all in the paint. I designed it to have internal compartments so you dont need to carry 1200 rounds u can carry 500 if thats all you want to carry.

The final version will have different shells so if you normally carry 600 rounds the pack will be shorter This version is  4 by 11 by 11 inches  so the 600 shell would be 4 by 7 by 11

Does it force feed the balls through the tube? It must, you said it has an eye to shut off the feed when the tac-cap is full. Also, it would need to force feed if you raise the marker above the pack. Do you have much trouble with ball breakage? How high a ROF will it support?

If you want to set a price for it, the first thing you have to figure out is how much it costs you for materials. Not knowing how it operates I can't guess as to what this figure is. Second thing you have to factor in is how long it takes to assemble, and how much your time is worth to you. Other than that, you do want to make sure the cost isn't too insanely high, or people won't buy it.

I actually did have an idea for something like this two or three years ago, though my thought would have been a shoulder carried rig with a tube hanging down to the marker, utilizing gravity. Nothing this elaborate. Nice incorporation of the tank holder/remote line as well. At the time I was thinking about it I definitely would have wanted one, though I never would have been able to afford it. At the time I was also more into the woodsball/milsim styles, but eventually gave that up for more high performance/speedball upgrades.

Much as I am enjoying the pictures, I should remind you that publishing this on the internet (or anywhere else for that matter) may endanger your patent rights for any jurisdiction where you haven't already filed.

I encourage you to find a patent lawyer quickly if you haven't done so already.

Heh - we do in fact do some paintball patent work, but I don't think he would want to pay our fees...   There are lots of good patent lawyers for this type of thing that are much cheaper.

I haven't seen one of them in awhile!
Nicely done!

While I'm sure some of the components in this rig were absent in ones prior (eye for example)... I have seen similar feed setups in the past. Years back, someone on another forum had pics up of their bulk-backpack feeder which fed the gun using a tube. I forget what was used to propel the balls, but recall a seperate air tank being involved.

You never know, it might already be patented. Check to see if Have Blue has anything of the sort listed... I think he's compiled a list of multiple paintball patents for viewing.

Date Posted: 01 March 2006 at 11:33am
I have already filed a patent. I have been wanting to show this off for weeks now but had to wait till I finshed the patent stuff. It was killing me.

The system uses a electric driven motor with an impeller to push the balls through the tube. The trick is doing this without stalling the motor or crushing the balls. Thats the secret.

The feed impeller is capable of feeding 25BPS. However you cant push paintballs through 3 feet of tubing that fast. There is to much friction and the balls are to fragile. I think this is why others have failed at a system like this they tried to feed the chamber of the gun and you cant keep up with todays rates of fire. This is why I use the little hopper on the gun It holds 50 to 75 balls and allows you to fire burst of full auto and not run out. The feeder is refilling the hopper at a rate of 7 to 10 BPS in reality is pleanty. If you figure full auto at 15BPS you would go through 1000 balls in 66 seconds. No one does that.

The system does not break balls as long as I use a medium grade paint. Cheap paint is crap. I wouldnt shoot it with or without this back. I shoot WPN Toxic.  I really like this paint. I was using before I built the Pack.  It worked in the system so I didnt see a reason to change. I have tested and will continue to test different paints. My plan is to build a list of recommended paint.

Very cool.

How much gravity do you need?  Does it feed from a prone position?  Will balls break inside the pack from shaking around if I run hard with a half-empty pack?

Very nice prototype.  Given that many folks pay over $100 for a loader, I would guess that a price in the $150 to $200 range would sell.  If it went much higher than that, I suppose there would still be a hard core group that would pony up.  It would seem like most scenario teams would want at least one.

As for what list price you place on it, I would imagine that you would need to charge at least 3 to 5 times the production cost in order to make any profit.  The lower figure would be for direct sales only.  If you have to go through distributors to retailers, then the higher figure is more realistic.  The only hope of bringing these figures down is to lay out a hefty marketing budget in the hope of substantially increasing the volume of sales.

you guys are loco i swear. if a paintball grenade launcher can go for $1000 with 6 thunder grenades why can't he get $1200 a pop for his backpacks. I'm sure once a video is released he wont be able to make them fast enough for people who are interested in buying them.

I hope he already has the corp or s corp name and federal id number because i am ready to buy a few shares right now. i know this will be a big hit on the woods circut.

that is sick. i wouldnt buy one though, cuz i play mostly speedball. 10 bps isnt fast enought for speed and it would be too mug for a front/mid. Although, if you could make it faster (15-20) and if it was legal, i could see like every back player buying one.

I watched the video; your backpack loader is amazing!

However, if I were going to invest, the model I would be looking for would be a 2,000-round jumbo version that holds two tanks and has twin powered feed tubes for use with my A-5 Double Trouble, so that I could have enough air to fire off a case of paint without reloading on either paint or air.  As it stands, with two full 330-round hoppers, four or five pods, and a single 91CI/4500PSI tank I can already fire 1,200 rounds from the Double Trouble and only have to reload once, which doesn't weigh all that much and is not so bad.  If you had a full-case jumbo model of this amazing contraption, it would offer a substantially increased tactical advantage and be ideal for double-barrel "hammer" mobile heavy gunner types -- many of whom have spent $1,000 on their guns and would probably plunk a couple more bills down on your supercool backpack if it holds to high production values.

Keep up the good work.

Hey Lil' C,
I have had a lot of intrest for the dual feed 2000 round system. I am working on getting the single feed out there for sell, but since I have so much intrest I am going to build a proto type 2000 round dual feed. Check the web page an a week or two I should have it buiilt by then.

Well turtle.. if u ever decide to take orders.. I want one.  A single feed for my A-5 SAW..  As many balls as it can hold  etc.

Is 1200 the most the single feed can hold.. or do u think u cna make a bigger one that holds more balls?

Please keep me informed...  Paypal is only a click away.

Personally I would be happy with 500... Not too much weight, but enough paintballs for me

Well 636andy636 you stand their with your pods and I will stand there with my pack and we will push each other over. We can keep doing this till one of or products break. I think it would be safe to say your ass would be very wet form paint.  I designed this to be stronger than Pods. I HATE PODS!!!!! I am a very agressive player I run, Jump, and  Dive. I was breaking a pod everytime I go to play. That one one of my primary reasons for building this.

Based on all the different requests for sizes I am going to offer different Shells from 500 to 2000. The system is modular so changing the size would only take about 5 minutes.

I still havent worked out a price. Now that I know there is a market. I am generating formal drawings to get quotes from vendors. This is not an easy task, My Dam Day job is really getting in the way of things. Let me tell you inventing something isnt the hard part getting it to market is. You gotta get lawyers involved to make sure someone dosnt sue you and take your house because  The hammer guy hurt his back caring 2000 rounds on to the field. Just a joke but you get the picture.

THANKS for all the input . It has been a big help.

.

Sounds like fun lol
I cant carry pods untill I get a bigger tank. 48/3k on a matrix = hopper and half a pod worth of shooting.

im sold on that bad boy. im just going to finish getting my A5 put together and then im going to buy that.

your not alone in hating pods i hate reloading i always lose like 2-20 paintballs reloading.

hey do you think you can get that motor to feed up to 15 BPS rather then ten? have your tried rubber tubing instead of plastic tubing to reduce friction? What kind of batteries does it use? how much did it cost you to make out of curiosity? Would you sew me if i tried to make one :P ?

hmmm i wuldnt buy it cuz i like to keep small and only carry about 2 pods max anyway...but i sure no a bunch of people who just unload every game and would enjoy it very much...but it wuld be hassle for a frontman like me cuz my A-5 is heavy and big of a traget enuff...but great idea, u said only 7-10 bps rite...can u get it to go higher

awesome idea and im glad you are going to go into production with it. i am a woodsball player myself but with the 50-75 ball reserve at the top along with the 7-10bps feed you could sustain firing 20-25bps for about 4 seconds. after spraying 100 balls one would hope that you hit the guy then youd have to wait maybe 5 to 7 seconds to be able to do it again. as i said im not a speedball player but that seems like plenty of time to me when you compair it to stopping and having to dump pods in after an 8 second burst of 25bps. anyway i would definately be interested in this. the specs i would like would be a 2000 round pack with a single feed and 2 slots for bottles at the bottom.

btw what are your plans about investors, im sure there are many eager people just on this forum whod like to get in on it since it seems like a great idea.

HELLA sweet,
realy good idea,
u might wont to make a verstion that holds 500, 600, 800 1200 1400 exet
i personly would buy a 500 but i just cant deal with 600+ paintballs
like to play anly 150-200 paintballs per game,

not games are only 10 mins

briliant idea,
think about puting a small blater in it, like a camel back has,
also there are small scuba tanks, that u could use for extra air for longer games

Sell the idea to a majer company, for thousants, then go sell it to the other compeneys, gives u the levrage and more $$$$$$$$$$$$$

once again u should make diffrent sizes.
600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, up to like 1800,

U might spark 24 hour strate games.

Brilliant
