I worked Subway for a while and it wasnt too bad. I quit when they changed to toasted subs and made taking and filling orders an assembley line process. Tips stopped comming in because of that change.
I thought about working 31 flavors but that shop get robbed at least once a month. Good Luck.

apply for some job openings at a hospital, and get good benefits. Get your feet in the door first and avoid housekeeping positions. Unless you have no choice.

Working is ok as long as you're making a profit. I found, when I was working and driving that between car insurance and repairs, gas, and my girlfriend, almost nothing was going into my pocket in the way of disposable income and even the possibility of saving money wasn't really there.
I reccommend still working, but mooching as much as possible. I was more broke while working. Without a license I've been able to live on what would have been two month's pay in realy money(before bills) and live for six months, including paying for a semester of community college. I estimate 35% went either directly or indirectly to my girlfriend between gifts, dates and food, 55% went to school and I blew what remained on myself.
So figure if you can keep your expenses low ands work as much as possible, it doesn't really suck. Mooch, mooch mooch.

Quick tip, live at home as long as you can. No electric bills, or gas or anything like that, hell you dont even have to pay for food. lol. But like me not having my liscense yet I have quite a bit of spending money and still put half of it in the bank. But gas money and insurance is gonna suck come summer time.

My horticulture teacher did that he. He's 27ish now. He did college and lived on his own for a couple years, then moved in with his parents, bought a truck and got his masters degree and paid everything off and now has house of his own, not a stupid plan imo but shunned by some.

Mooching off you parents while working gives you all the economic advantaged you could get in the military, minus the getting shot at. You do get yelled at a bit more at home, but they may help curb your blowing too much money on booze over the weekends.

I'm glad the whole "first job" part of my life is over. Now it's college time...
Seriously, they're right about fast food. My first job was a Chinese food place where the kitchen was like a third the size of my room with four giant deep fryers. You spend your whole night trying to wash the feeling of grease off. I don't even like fried foods anymore.

Oh and SAVE MONEY.
It gets tough when you have to pay for insurance ($100/mo), gas ($20/2 week), girls (fluctuates too much.. but shouldnt affect you), ticket ($100), and car repair bills ($1500) all in the same month...
-------------
|

Saving money is definitely key.
I go to university, live at my dad's place, work in the army reserves, and also work part time hardware retail (dictionary term for a female dog goes here) at Canadian Tire. Good money when all is combined. In may I go to full time work with the military for four months, and at Corporal's pay that'll be about $14k or so when all is said and done- bloody good money at the age of 19.
This summer alone I can easily save enough money to retire with over a million dollars, or buy a house later in life, or whatever. Saving a little money early and investing it will pay off huge in the long run. If you can afford to put money away now, do it. You won't regret it.

I get around 90+ miles on a quarter tank (which is slightly over 4 gallons) which averages to be 23 MPG, but I accelerate hard so that burns more then normal.
Driving for a normal week =

| I think BMW proved that to be a myth.
Anyways, save money that's the key. If you are just getting by paycheck to paycheck, it isn't worth it. You will also be totally screwed if something like a speeding ticket comes up or your car breaks.
Just a heads-up to you guys who are thinking about cashing in those savings bonds grandma gave you every christmas to buy a car or something, you're going to get raped paying taxes on the interest. Cash them as soon as they mature. Also women are total money pits. I had to cash bonds today so I can afford to get my license back, get insurance and survive long enough to get a job. The gf is already making huge plans for ways to spend my money and has visions of me carting her around(after I drive a hundred miles out there to her school in traffic after not driving for nine months)town, buying her expensive dinners and paying for dates. They're evil. Also, debit cards are not for people without discipline. You can find yourself broke in a hurry if you're not actually handling the cash. Especially when your gf says you'll split dinner, then says she doesn't have enough cash so you can just put it on your card.
If she does that again I swear I will beat her with a rubber hose in the middle of the resturaunt.

"Also, debit cards are not for people without discipline."
Debit cards are better than regular credit cards. If you do not have any funds in your checking account, then you won't be able to use it or pay for anything. With a regular credit card, oh man forget it. You'll be up to your neck with more than what you charged for, depending on your APR, holy smokes..... if you are not too keen in using credit cards and how it works.... it can ruin your life and blow your chances of getting a house/car with low payments. Also if you do not make those payments in time. There goes your credit/FICO score.
