Hey, this summer I plan on getting a job, and would eventually like to buy my first car.  I don't really know much about cars, so I was wondering, on average how much do you have to spend to get a used car that's pretty decent?  Not real crappy looking, won't break down a lot, just a good basic first car.  Thanks for any help.

It depends.  I'm looking to spend about $6000 on my first car.  I think anything above $5000 will get you something pretty decent.  Check out www.craigslist.com for some cars that might be in your area.

I don't think you should set a certain price.
I mean it can't be like $300, but it will depend more on how well the previous owner(s) took care of the car.

What do you want, a car, truck? But for 4000$ youll have enough. But you probably should of worked last summer too.

I spent 1k and got an 87 crown vic with LOW miles but I also got it from my uncle. 1k can get you something good but remember its not about looks just something to get you around. Try and deal with people you can trust.

Drive around neighborhoods and look for the cars with those stickers from the city saying if they move the car in like a week or 2 weeks or something like that then the city will tow it...wait a couple days and if the sticker and car are still there then knock on the door cause odds are the people dont care about the car and plan on letting the city get rid of it for them which means they will sell cheap (dont haggle set your price if they say higher then leave)

First car? First nice car? Well, 12 thousand if your working, it will do you just fine, but if your still a student, 6,000 will get you a nice reliable clunker.

if you're patinet and act smart (have car checked out), you can get a decent car for $2000-4000. My first car was a '96 Integra in great condition for $3100.

Jeez, I wish I could afford a $6000 "clunker".

I drive a 1983 BMW 320i. $1500. It's totally possible to get a good car(even a BMW) for around 3-5k. If you want a great car, look for a BMW 318ti in as good of condition as you can find. The handle well, get 30mpg on the highway, and you can carry stuff in them. Like a water heater.

In addition to that, a supercharger will boost it to 200hp at the wheels. Also, just about any BMW 6 cylinder engine will fit and work fine with that transmission. It's close to being drop-in. So buy a 95 318ti, buy the engine out of an M3 somebody wrecked, turbocharge and intercool THAT and get a 400hp sleeper.

I spent $800.

91 bronco, beautiful interior. Right now it has a tranny leak, and the dash lights don't work and it needs to get inspected.

For a decent car, i would look at late 90's, early 00's toyotas and subarus. But that could cost from 2k-10k.

Well, I paid $720 for my first car in April of '04.
It's a 1994 Plymouth Colt GL that had 176,000 miles on it, and now has 202,000 (it has a 4-banger BTW).
I've probably only spent $1500 or less between buying the car, putting in a CD player, and doing normal maintenance (replace windshield, tires, battery, etc).

It's possible to find a good car for under $1,000, but you have to look around. Typically I'd say you should be able to find a good car for around $2,000 if you know where/how to look, and anything over $5,000 should be just fine.

I paid $500 for my first car. It was a 1991 Ford Escort, it got me through highschool and thats all I cared about(the 30mpg was nice too). That car sure took a licking and kept on running. I let my brother have it after that, and still ran fine when I sold it for 150 bucks a two years ago.

Hmm you are 14 and have a car whose value ranges from $30,000 for a rusted out hulk, to $150,000 for a concourse original?  i have a hard time swallowing that.

Also, why would anyone turbo a car that is worth tens of thousands of dollars more in original form?  How did you pipe the turbo set up?  Through the fender aprons?  What type of turbos did you use? whats your compression ratio? Boost Psi? How did you run the boost into the carb, or did you swap to EFI?  What motor does it have?  The 351W, 390, 428 cj, or 429?

Mustangs are not technically muscle cars.  They are pony cars.  also, plymouth came out with the first pony car just prior to the mustangs release.

I beg to differ.  2nd generation Camaros are way more white trash than mustangs.

I have 3 mustangs.  a 65 coupe, 67 coupe, and a 73 Mach.  You can think what you want.  Its a hobby, albiet an expensive one.

How much are you willing to spend?  How far do you commute?  Are you willing to have a car payment?  If you are then can you afford the higher insurance rates for full coverage?

Personally I would start looking for an early 90's honda civic with less than 175,000 miles.  They are usually priced under 3,000 dollars.  They get decent mileage, parts are cheaper than a european import.

Get a toyota, srsly. We have 5 now, and they all rock face. Oldest is a 1982 that runs perfectly still. I left the gas, oil, and battery in all winter, where it hit -44, and it started fine as soon as I went to go start it.

They are amazingly durable and they're efficient.

My first car and yes I paid for everything. 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. 3.8 litre supercharged engine, took the U-bend out, 2.5 exhaust, ceramic headers, flowmaster 40 series, cold air intake w/ K&N filter, and I swapt the original 3.75 inch SC pulley out and put in a 3.5 inch. Great car, super fast. It had about 340  to 350 hp. But I sold it and bought a fully loaded Buick Century. The GTP was decreasing in a value quickly and it started to have problems. I'm in college so I have no money to fix a high performance car, so I sold it. The Buick is a good reliable simple car. Its a 2003 with 50,000 miles on it, and it was only $3,750 (awesome price). I bought it off of the insurance company my step dad works for.

You could find good deals. YOu just got to really look. I say $4,000 is plenty of money for a decent first car.

Too Many variables to give a concrete answer.  I got my 1996 Ford Ranger ex Cab 4x4 V6 auto for $5000CDN.  Got my 1986 VW GOLF Diesel for $1500 with A TON of spare parts witch i parted out for $400.  Got my 2000 Yamaha V-star Classic for $5000CDN.

Findgin a GOOD used car for myself is fairly easy as im a mehcanic for a living so i can pretty mutch be shure of what im getting.  Hell how many people show up to look at a car with a jack and a small tool box LOL.

Dealers poop themselvs when i start lifting and checking front ends LOL.

When i bought my last Diesel i whent as far as testing the coolant and teacheing the dealer what the readings ment (Diesel coolant requiers a special aditive to prevent cavitation due to their more vilont vibration).

When i sign the papers to buy a vehical i usually have a list of repairs on condition to be done befor i pick the vehical up LOL.

AS FOR INSHURANCE..... THINK YOU GUYS GOT IT BAD LOOK AT WHAT US CANUKS ARE PAYING HERE IN TORONTO ONTARIO.  I used to pay $600/MONTH to inshure my 1999 Ford Ranger (full coverage).

Now i pay $200/month for my 96 Ford Ranger 4x4/86 VW Golf Diesel/And 2000 Yamah V-Star classic Motorcycle.

I paid (yes me) $3k for my 1996 honda acoord V6, leather, sunroof,Automatic(not by choice), had 100K miles on it, good condition except for a few rock chips. But i love it, its a GREAT car. Good gas mileage for a V6, its quick, not the fastest but its quick. Handles good, comfy, i can cram 4 friends in ok. The only problem is snowboarding.. but anyways. I def. reccomend a honda or toyota, great cars, reliable, and easy to get parts. And i pay about $150 a month for full coverage.

I also have a 1996 Honda Del Sol, its small and a 5 speed, and the roof comes off, so its my fun in the sun car. But i drive the Accord 99.9% of the time, its a GREAT car.

You can't compare thirty to fifty year old cars to modern imports in terms of rarity. When was the last time you saw a Mercedes Benz 1957 300 SL or a 1994 BMW 850CSi? Many imports go up in value over time, and muscle cars don't automatically go up in value. I didn't even understand your last sentence so I am not going to respond to that.

Well, now I'm pissed.
As soon as I start bragging about how my $700 car is still running 2 years and 25k+ miles, it takes a giant crap all over me.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, but I'm fairly certain it's the alternator (it's something electrical, at the very least).

I'd recommend something with a stick. Manual trans will make the car feel faster and be more fun to drive.
