So, I was reading http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931913,00.asp - this article on extreme tech about Vista and why it wont suck. I haven't done a lot of research on it but between what they mentioned in the article and the other things I've read/heard, I'm gettin kinda excited about it....Not sure when it'll be released but it should be something to see....Thoughts?

It'll just be "meh". It's just putting a new face on Windows with a few upgrades.

Its just windows, who cares?
All of the "revolutionary" features are just stolen from Mac OSX anyway. And it has TCPA, http://www.againsttcpa.com/what-is-tcpa.html - http://www.againsttcpa.com/what-is-tcpa.html
All those features in that article are totally ho-hum anyway. ZOMG NEW SOUND! Who cares?
And then you have this:
propoganda article wrote:
var url = unescape(window.location.href)
var firstComma = url.indexOf(",")
var indexStart = (url.indexOf(",", (firstComma + 1)) + 1)
var indexEnd = url.indexOf(",", (indexStart + 1))
var strLength = (indexEnd - indexStart)
if (indexEnd > -1) {
cid = url.substr(indexStart, strLength)
document.cookie = "cid=" + cid + "; path=/"
}

DirectX 10
If you play games (and maybe
even if you don't), you care about the next big version of DirectX.
DX10 is going to be Vista-only. It relies on the new driver model, so
don't expect some sort of eventual back-port to Windows XP.
|
|
New driver model my ass, they just want you to chuck $200 on XP 2.
And their new security thing will be a huge pain. Theyre trying to do *NIX style permissions and accounts, but its microsoft so of course theyll bork it up. Besides, the only reason theyre doing all this new security stuff is for TCPA (Or whatever the christ theyre calling it nowdays)

It wasn't only stolen from macs. The multiple desktop feature was
stolen from linux (did linux steal it from mac? From my
experience its a unique to linux feature). I can't wait for Bill
to call all of the features new and revolutionary, developed by
microsoft.

So far, all I've seen of Windows Vista is annoying. All the amazing, new features, I already have on my computer. If you care to watch, it plays the audio of the Vista presentation, while a mac easily completes all the tasks with software that exists. I suggest watching.

Not that I want to turn this into a Mac vs Pc. debate but Chopps, how many Games will a Mac run successfully?
Both Machines serve their purposes, to some extent.
And before you ask me how many Windows Blue Screen's I have had. The answer with XP is none.
I dont particularly like Xp, but for me it has gotten the job done.
And I can count the number of Win2k crashes on one hand and I ran that for several years.

Obviously you dont get the same amount of selection, but most major games are ported to mac relatively quickly. Theres exceptions, such as Valve refuses to mac for some reason, but who wants Steam(ing pile of...You know what) on a mac?
A few major developers do their own mac versions, and do it well. Blizzard has always supported mac, and since Diablo2 second printing, all their games are hybrid discs out of the box, meaning you can drop Warcraft3 or World of Warcraft or Starcraft into a mac and it will install and play perfectly. Id software did native mac support for quite a while until Graeme Devine quit, so Doom3 and on has been ported by a third party.
One of the things I like to throw in console gamers faces is the fact that Halo was originally designed as a mac-only game. Bungie decided to take the Blizzard route and release it as cross-system out of the box, and only when the PC gaming magazines started to pick it up did Microsoft buy it out to sell their poo-box.

Who cares?
Seriously, since its now just a redesigned version of windows 2003 with extra crap thrown on for dressings, I don't care. I wasn't impressed when it was actually going to be a new os(back in the longhorn days) with a new file system and overhauled kernel. I was more worried about the inevitable problems it would have caused.
Now that its just NT version 6(or is it 6.1?) I'm just grateful that there shouldn't be any compatibility issues with in-system software. I'm mostly just "meh" about it.
Personally? My next home machine will probably be a mac, so I'm not too concerned about it there either.

From what the article said, they are revamping the kernel....What were they going to do with the file system?

Word has it, the source code they bought is the code for the Spotlight dealy that is embedded in OS X 10.4 and up. So, windows has re-done their file system to make is searchable by such a program. I've heard that as a result of this, OS X will be able to nativly run on PC, and vice versa. Not sure, since it's still semi early, but that sounds like the case

since steam got a huge overhaul, it's not too bad anymore. i don't like some of the game code changes that valve has initiated but i work around what i can.
