Both are great, but my vote goes to full metal jacket because of all the good quotes.

They're both such different movies, but I have to give to nod to FMJ because of R Lee Ermey's mouth.

FMJ was a great drama, and amusing in its own right, but Jarhead hit far closer to the reality of military service. My vote goes to Jarhead. FMJ is an easy civilian vote, but anyone in the forces should be won over by Jarhead due to its brilliant portrayal of the petty bullscheisse of military service.

I think Jarhead was a more emotionally intense movie because it came from the perspective of an actual Marine. You're not just observing this Marine-you're living his experience. Full Metal Jacket definately won points for immersing you in the amazing boot camp scene, but the movie's realism and depth drops dramatically when they hit Vietnam. I think FMJ really lost its focus on the soldier and became just another war movie halfway through. So I'd say as movies go, Jarhead is the superior. As far as which one was more memorable, I'd go with FMJ just because I'll never forget the boot camp.

hard to say cuz the wars they involve. but as someone stated above, if you are a marine then you know what it is like. my date is a marine and she loved it. when they started crawling she grabbed my arm and said that is how it actually it is.

true
Jarhead did follow the book. Amazingly close at that. I was surprised at some of the stuff they didn't leave out. I was sure some of that would get left out, but it didn't. That's one of the things that makes it so good.

They are tied in my opinion. I enjoy the closeness and realism Jarhead offers as much as I like the fricken hilariousness that fmj offers.

Jarhead was better because of Jamie Joxxs roll, when i try and rate movies i try and figure out how difficult it was for the actors to pull off a roll. Jamie Foxx has never had to do a roll anything like what he did in jarhead, gylanhol or however you spell his name wasnt bad either. And sarsiguard is coming along nicely as far as his career is concerened.

I do the same thing with seeing it through the actors' eyes. But I still think that it would have been really hard constantly yelling at all those cruel/funny orders like that Sargent guy. I mean that would be hard. I would have so many takes cuz I would crack with laughter

I mean if you look at Jamie Foxxs career, its amazing, he went to playing Shanaynay on "In living Color" to his last roll in Jarhead.
Hes really grown as an actor.

Jarhead ... because it's so real makes you feel that yoru back in. I still think of the really stupid things we did when bored. Once in a blue moon someone will call me and say
"remember playing baseball with taped granades?"
"who was that airman we jumped in Kadena AFB?"
"sucks to be them..."
