Well, not yet, I need help deciding.

The new offer comes from some close friends of my mother. They got a truck for their daughter for her last two years of college, and now that she has joined the AirForce they got it back and they are selling it.

It is:

2000 Ford Ranger, extended bed.

Red. Standard Shift 5 Speed. 90,000 Miles. Manual windows. CD player. Super clean inside and out. Took it on a test drive today and it runs great. It was taken care of very very well.

Now, my current car, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, still runs, and only has 78,000 miles.

It runs ok, but little things about it are starting to get to me. In the past year I have had the starter quit, the bendix motor burnt up, the ceiling upholstery came undone, wiring problems with the blinkers and dash, brake problems [one side would overheat and lock up], and most recently, the drivers side door hinge snapped off.

All of this stuff I have repaired, and none of it was really costly, but the sheer fact that I am trying to take really nice care of it and it still is falling apart is dishartening.

Anywho, I have aranged my pros and cons.

Pros:

Better gas milage.

More Reliable. [I am moving to Orlando next year for college, and I find that If I need to go anywhere out of the county now I take my mother's Honda. I just dont trust the Jeep on long hauls]

Truck bed will be nice for moving things.

Insurance will go down alot because I will be leaving the "SUV" catagory, plus it has airbags

Cons:

Seating. I wouldnt be able to pile in friends anymore, with the Rangers standerd cab I would be limited to two people.

Shifting. I can drive a stick fine [Not to mention the shifting in the Ranger is very clean] but I am also very lazy, and do not like shifting. Sorry to dissapoint all you forum-wannabe-racers, I dont like manual trans.

Cost. Right now, before college, I am not sure if buying a new[er] car is worth it, becuase I keep thinking that mine, despite its downfalls, still runs.

I should have pics up soon. I am axnious to hear the automotive side of the forums opinions on this.

Whats wrong with the jeep that makes you not trust it on long hauls??

I dislike ford, so im against it, plus the Ford has more miles = more chance of something breaking on it. Usually something major around the 100k mark.

I'd just stick with the Jeep. 90k seems a bit high mileage-wise. If your Jeep is getting the job done right now, I don't see the point in getting something new. It's your call though. You know your situation better than anyone else.

BearClaw to the resque?
IMO i'd rather have a ranger over a jeep, but thats based on the vehicle not the condition or mileage.

Right now its just small things keeping me from long hauls. The bracket for my left headlight is busted so the light sags. Back right tire leaks air. Little stuff.

Rangers are awesome trucks.
Thats the one thing ford does right, is the Ranger series.
You can pack 3 people in the cab, trust me.
Look the truck over very well.

Agreed on the Rangers. I've never known anyone that had a ranger to have problems.

Think about the seating carefully though-I went from a Mustang which seats roughly four people comfortably, five if you need it, to an 05 Dodge Ram regular cab that fits two comfortably, three if you need it. And while you may not notice it much at first, it really starts to get on your nerves. I hate stuffing three people in the cab of my truck-especially on long trips. I really regret not paying the extra and getting an extended cab truck.

A family friend of mine has a Ranger. I believe its a 2001 model. Its a nice truck. Hes never had any problems with it. It has over 100,000 miles on it already and it still drives nicely.

Any car not named Yugo will last well over 150,000 miles if you take care of it.

I love ford but Id say find something better, Im not a big fan of the rangers anyway.

It's a coin toss. If I were you I'd get the Ranger just because of the stronger resale/trade in value you'll get when you eventually move on to something better.

Trucks are more handy than SUV's in many ways, cost less to insure, and are easier to maintain, and, as I mentioned above, trucks have stronger resale value than any passenger car or SUV (except for Jeep Wranglers).

90,000 miles isn't alot for a Ranger truck, provided it was regularly maintained. Start in up when it's cold and make sure there are no knocks or rattles, make sure the oil is clean, that the anti-freeze is clear, and that the hoses and belts are in good shape.

If it has the 2.3 four cylinder engine, it would be wise to get the timing belt replaced if it hasn't already been done. If you know how to do it, check the brake pads and shoes, you'll have to pull the brake drums off the back to see the shoes, but you can check the brake pads by just removing the front wheels.

If you want someone else to check it out for you, some garages like Midas, Goodyear, or Firestone will do a "safety" check for a small fee, or for no charge.

don't do anything you'll lose money on (unless a Ranger is desirable for you )

I'm sure you'll regret forking out cash for that car once you're in market for something nice (at least that's what I would think) good luck, and look ahead to see what you'll be able to afford

Check the enite truck for any rust.  It may look like a good body, but you want to make sure.

Sitting in a humid environment will do that to the bottom of a car.

Im not really a Ford person, but the Ranger isnt that bad.

How much do you know about engines? If you don't know much, have a person that does look it over. If you do, well then, you know what to do.

Keep in mind that if you keep the Jeep, the "inexpensive" fixes may seem more expensive if you're not working in college, and/or if you're paying for more of your own stuff.

Kelly Blue Book has the truck between $4350 and $4600 depending on some varibles.

I would be getting it for $4000.

My Jeep could get about $1500.

The truck is in super condition.

I know what you guys are saying about not spending the money now, but at 12 years old I am afraid the Jeep is about to hit the point where the little stuff starting to go wrong starts turning into bigger things going on.

Def. get the ranger, thats of course over the jeep, but Id really recomend a Toyota Tacoma over the ranger, you can certianly find one with 100,00 miles that will last another 100k for $4k. Fords after 100,000 miles start to nickel and dime you to death. Have a mechanic check the valves and the intake and all that. thats where alot of probs start, fix it when its small and it wont get big.

Yeah Tacoma's are good trucks.

I like my little ranger (this is my second one actualy). And being  both a mehcanic and a owner rangers are running REALLY OUTDATED tehcnology but are very solid PROVEN little trucks and offer good reliability and are just fun to drive.

My current one is a 1996 Ford Ranger XL Extended Cab 4x4 with the 3.0L and Auto (wish it was stick).  Has 237,000kms  (roughly 150,000miles) thus far and still runs great.  I have not had this one too long yet but so far its been troule free and works well for what i ask of it. And beign 4x4 its a BLAST in the mud and great in the snow (something i gotta worry about LOL).

My old one i had bought when it was a year old funy enough i bought it as reliable transportation back when i was in college and sold it when i finished college for something older (Im a mehcanic i like modifying and tinkering).  It was a 1999 Ranger XLT Reg Cab Flare Side 3.0L V6 and again a damn Auo.  It had 20,000kms(12500Miles) when i bought it and 130,000kms(81000miles) when i sold it. I had that truck for 3 years ad other than brakes a O2 Sensore an oil changes i never had any other trouble.

Mehcanically a 2000 model is idetical to my old 1999 model.  The 3.0L V6 (introduced in 1992) although pretty Gutless and kinda noisy (slight pinging not loud just its desticnk sound) they are known to mehcanics as the Coackroach (AKA they dont DIE) and its common to see them hitting 400,00kms befor rebuild.    They are an old tech Cast Iron block and heads OHV engein with timeing CHAINS  rather then belts.   The Autos and the 5 speeds are built well and usually go trouble free for a good amount of milage .  Rear ends most common in your speced truck would be Fords good old 7.5" rear end with open 3:73 rear gear and if your lucky a limited slip differential.  Meaning its geared perfect for light hauling while still keeping the rpms down for a good freeway commuter.  Suspenshion was updated in 1998 as well as boxing the front of the frame makeing the truck just that mutch more reliable and MUTCH more ridgid.  Rears suspension as gone almost unchanged since the rangers inception in 1983.  In fact the basic frame has gone unchanged since 1983 witch is one reason rangers are slowly looseing sales.  The toyotas, nissans and some of the newer offering Dodges and Chevs are great little rigs and in most cases offer comparable towing hauling abilities while maintaing beter rides and noise levels than the aging ranger  But hell after 23 years and mostly unchanged you cant get a mutch more proven vehical than the Ranger.  The Post 1993 Bodies have all been great as far as rust goes (even my 96 is rust free after 10 years of Canadain winters).  They can haul a substanchial amount safly around 1400lbs in the bed or up to 5000lbs in a trailer (with trailer brakes).  So far although i have had close to the 1400lbs in the bed i have only pulled around 1200lbs of Motorcycel and gear in the trailer and even that makes here work pretty hard (but then agian im comeing from a Diesel truck witch would not break a sweat on a 6% grae hualing 6000lbs).

On average my 1999 Truck got 22-25mpg Highway and 19-22Mpg City with the AUTO transmishion.  My current 1996 Ford Ranger witch is almost 800LBS heavier gets 18-23mpg mixed driving and again its an auto. Far from my Little VW golf Diesels 45mpg but better than my old 7.3 Turbo Diesel F250 14-20mpg.

The Fun to drive factor is all personal preferance but with the rangers more so than ANY other Pickup/suv i have driven (thats ALOT) the rangers have a better feel for the road and in my opinon are just a blast to drive.  I drove my 1999 from here to pensilvania on vacation one year hauling all the gear for some friends (all on bikes befor i finaly got my own bike).  And although i was lightly loaded and in a pickup over a bike i had a blast and managed to keep up decently considering.  The drive was something like 600kms each way and we did like 1000kms rideing though the mountins in the three days their.   And unlike the bikes i was in comfort the whole way.

When the time comes to replace my 1996 ranger (two more years) i will hand it over to my youger sister and probly just get a new one (THIS TIME STICK).

Heres a pick of my old 1999

Heres one of my 1996 (although now she has 30" tires and no bug deflector and some 4x4ing damage)

I would go with it because your brakes haven't exactly been reliable, and by saying that the Ranger having air bags is a plus, I am only going to assume the Jeep doesn't.

I hardly doubt that because the tracks would rip roads to shreds. Have you even been to the UK?

Update.

I got the truck today.

First time driving a stick shift on my own, alittle nervewracking. Especially becuase it was coming home from work at midnight, in the middle of a rainstorm.

I like the truck alot. The transmission is taking some time to get used to but so far its a nice thing.

Have fun with your vehicle.  The only downsides of a stick IMO is the driving on steep hills with several stop signs(hopefully noone is real close to your rear), and the other is being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 30-45 mins.  Other than that, having a stick is fun.  Enjoy...

pfft, 1 hour... my daily commute from the north side of Chicago back down to the south side takes about 2 hours in mostly bumper to bumper traffic. Driving with a manual tranny kind of helps keep the boredom go away, but not much.

My brother used to have a 5 speed 2000 ranger... it was a piece of garbage, hopefully you have more luck with yours.

Looks nice I STILL wish mine was stick.  Congrats on the new ride.  In some time youl get used to the 5 speed.  Driveing Stik shifts a Nessecity for my trade so i was forced to learn the same time i was learning to drive.  But i really got better after getting my own stickshift.

Think driving thats bad try driving my 86 VW Golf Diesel.  CABLE actuaded clutch 52hp engine  No powersteering and the damn second gear syncros are shot.

Then even worse head down the road in a big rig.  Mehcanical linkage actuated clutchs HEAVY pedal LONG travel and up to 18 gears to worry bout (most commons 10 and 13 speeds) and NO gears have sycros so you gotta double clutch or learn to shift without the clutch (my prefered methon).  I dive em every day as a mehcanic and id HATE to be stuck in traffic in one.
