I say Ion.  They can be very nice guns with only a few upgrades to them.

Ion. They're great guns out of the box and there's tons of upgrades for them.

eff the ion. get the pro with the e-bolt (not grip). it may be more expensive, but its the performance of an awesome electro, plus the reliability of a tippy.

I dont think that you can put an Ebolt on a Custom Pro.

so an custom pro E would be better than an ion?

no, it wouldnt it would shoot a little less than the ion by like 2 balls and the egrip is 100 bucks so u may as well buy a ion. but also for the ion u need to buy HPA. i say ion if u have the cash. and plus tippys are great woodsball guns not speedball.

1.  An Ebolted 98 would shoot just as fast as an Ion, and since its a Tippmann it'd be very durable.  Tippmanns are fine for speedball, all you need to do is some simple milling and you can make the gun light and perfect.  98s aren't wide at all, and with a short barrel they're very manuverable.

2.  You don't need to buy HPA for an Ion.  You can use A/S C02.

3.  A 98 and an Ebolt would come to around $350.

IMO, a tricked out custom pro is much nicer than any higher end electro.

I have no clue about the prices of this stuff in Belgium... But I'll use US dollars for examples, because most people understand that the best...

(Prices from countypaintball.com)

ION - $284
Good Hopper - ~$100
Good HPA tank - ~$200
Good Barrel - ~$100

Stats at this point:
-17 bps
-Pretty good consistancy
-Eyes
-Electronics in hopper and gun
-Accurate
-Apparently "one of the lightest high ends @ 2.2lb"

Total cost: ~$684

OR

Custom Pro (WAS E-Trigger)- $239
Cyclone - $60
QEV - $5
Good HPA tank - ~$200
Good Secondary Reg - ~$80
Good Barrel - ~$100

Stats at this point:
-up to 30bps, reliably 20-21 with cyclone
-No need for eyes
-Great consistancy
-Less need for batteries
-Lower profile hopper
-Accurate
-Dropforward
-About 2.5lb with barrel, drop, and cyclone (varies with barrel)
-LOTS of millable stuff to make it even lighter :)

Total cost: ~$684

If I were to play speedball... IF... I would go for the 98.  It's a cheap gun, but it's durable, and has so many upgrades...  It can grow with you, and there are so many home mods to do it's much more fun.

I wouldn't want to drop my ion when I slipped in the gravel...

But, that's just my oppinion :)

Raven Gaurd your reduculas. Sure tippys are good woods gun but in speedball there is no way a tippy is better then a high end like a DM, Timmy or ego. Tippies wont even have eyes and eyes are very important when you're shooting fast you don't want your gun to turn into a blender. Sure a tippy is Reliable but if you take care of your gun it will be just as reliable you will have more problems no doubt about that but a bit of dedication to your gun can go a long way. Plus the Cyclone is a waste of space it's freaking huge you can't keep your hopper in when you snap right (I believe it's on the right) And I've never played on a field with graval, always turf. Oh yeah the tippy has a drop that's a bad thing not a good thing drops make you have bad form. And the tippy is going to be a major gas hog because of the cyclone.

So in the end an Ion is way better for speedball.

The eyes are important if you want to shoot fast reliably. The new Custom Pro with ACT (Anti Chop Technology) might work just as well but the vision eyes on the Ion are proven to work well.

For tournament level paintball, I would still probably suggest the Ion, even though I do love Tippmann's reliability. My main reason is that the Ion is smaller/lighter which is also important in higher level tournaments.

Both markers are great for the price though, so you'd probably be happy with either one.

If you've ever used a cyclone, you would retract your statement, and judging by your comments I notice you aren't even sure that it feeds from the right...  The cyclone is very light and compact, and I'd trust it over any electronic hopper.

Eyes become unimportant when using the cyclone.  Only cheap balls break on the bolt, and it's not because they are improperly fed, but because of the force of the bolt.  Anybody who has owned an a-5 or 98 with cyclone will agree with it's reliability, be it from firing 20bps from an r/t or e-grip.  It may require parts to be replaced every few years, but Tippmann will send the required parts to your doorstep for free.  Now imagine this system on the anti-chop custom pro.

Besides that point, nobody said you have to buy a cyclone.  You can install a vertical feed and use a halo like everybody else.  I've never heard of a tippmann with a feeding problem using a halo, and again, imagine with the anti-chop.

Also, an Ion is barely lighter than the custom pro.  I weighed my girlfriend's custom pro (no e-grip) with a small hopper, the feedneck, barrel, and dropforward in place, and the scale barely passed 2lb.  Even if it weighs more, it's a fraction of a pound... IMO, that is not worth complaining about :)

Also, according to you, nutteralex, dropforwards are bad.  A dropforward is useful for balancing the gun and making it more compact.  It depends on the player and what they prefer, but i'm willing to bet every speedballer with a dropforward on their marker would like to disagree with you.

So in conclusion I'd like to ask you, nutteralex, what besides personal preference would make an Ion so much better than a custom pro?

1 lighter 2 faster 3. The cyclone is freaking huge you can't keep it in if you're snapping to the right, why because it's way off to the side. 4 also goes with 3 more compact when i have to use a tippmann I hold it by the macro it's to freaking long. 5 It's a gas hog with the cyclone not good for a back man. 6 Consistancy is terrible on Tippmanns using Co2 or Air. 7 If you get a drop forward your elbow is bring forced out ask someone who uses a drop forward where they get hit most. 8 The cyclone feeds 15 but that was thing will make it go 20 and if you play ina series that allows ramping you're gun is a blender unless if the tippmann can't actually go 20 BPS. Even if you get rid of the cyclone You're gunna chop like mad my gun chops without eyes a tippmann would chop more I don't really know what they run on.

Go out and shoot an Ion is a speedball game then shoot a tippy you will know the difference.

Only thing I can see better on a tippy is reliablility which they were made for.

1.) Lighter by under half a pound, if even.
2.) Not faster, you don't listen.  Ion = 17bps 98 = 21bps
3.) Problem solved, don't use the cyclone.

I've seen tippmanns fire over the chrono at 230 fps 5 times in a row, and the next one was 231.  How consistant do you want?  Paintballs will only be so accurate!

And I have held and fired an angel, I'm assuming that's better than the Ion, didn't feel like anything special to me.  All I know is every time I go to play, theres always one guy sitting out, fixing his Ion.

Oh and about not being as fast, I disagree, from experiance.  My a-5 fires a steady 20bps with my response trigger.  And the cyclone can feed 17-18 stock with no problems.

You can install the reg where the steel hose enters the gun, and use that for the handle.

If you stick your elbow out, that's your own inexperiance.  I can managed to tuck in and so can everyone I know with drops.

Not to mention there are tonnes of parts you can dremel off the custom :)  and you end up with something lighter than the Ion as well.

You still have no argument :)

Happy hunting.

The electronic custom 98 Pro is a sear tripper marker. Think SPYDER. No thank you.

An E-bolted 98 is much better, as it, like the Ion, is a TRUE electropneumatic marker.

Plus, I think the eyes make the ion a better choice. My A-5 (which I ditched) was Cycloned, and if a shell had a weak spot, it became a blender.

I you are serious about your speedball, I would strongly advise the Ion.

For speedball the Ion > 98 CP E no doubt.

I'm sorry but the people argueing against it don't know what they are talking about. Like hway said the CP E is a seartripper, meaning it will be less effecient, louder, and kick harder then the Ion (yes, it makes a difference, when your shooting fast the barrel moving even a tiny bit makes a HUGE difference downfield), and lets not forget that the Ion has eyes while the CP P E is blind. The Ion is also much lighter and better balanced for speedball, it may be a more dramatic change because I have a dropfoward on my tippmann and a unimount on my Ion, but playing the bunkers correctly and snap shooting are much easier with the Ion, I have no idea where you are getting 2.5 lbs on the CP E with everything but the tank raven but thats total bs. Fighting about the speed of markers is stupid now a days because with a few upgrades everything starting at a tippmann or spyder will shoot faster then you should ever need it to.

I kind of skipped around writing that so hopefully it isn't too choppy to read, and just so you guys know I am not bashing tippmanns I love my tippmann, but it is just not as good as the Ion or any other mid grade electro for speedball.

no, you make sense.  I dunno about the weight, i just put it on a scale and it gave me about 2lb, so I figured I should add a bit.  I never said there was a tank on it, I said barrel, drop, and hopper feedneck, read a bit more carefully :P

Anyways, now with the new Ion price drop, I would definitely suggest it.  Smart Parts is selling it for $224 USD new, so for speedball, this has turned into the better deal.  The main reason I choose a custom pro over an Ion is sheerly because I believe the custom pro upgraded to function in the same manner is better.  They both have ups and downs, but I prefer the custom pro.  I have fired both, if you don't think I have, but not fast.  I reach higher BPS on my a-5 than most people are likely to walk, and recoil has never been an issue...  I doubt it would be one in speedball where you are moving twice as often as I do.  Maybe I'm just special, and don't have any of the problems everyone seems to have lol...

To each his own.

If I were to get into speedball today, I would honestly buy the Ion due to the new price drop, but by no means is the custom pro a bad choice.

Even actionvillage has been selling them at that price for the last couple days.    I F%$%&^% hate smart parts!  They just made my Custom pro and my Ion worth less.

My Ion rules in speedball (when it feels like).  My Custom pro is a workhorse and will always perform when I want it to and never break down.

The Custom Pro will get the job done but the Ion does it better when it comes to speedball.
