Isn't terminal velocity the highest speed a given object can reach while in a vaccuum? (optimal conditions, no resistance, space for instance) Therefore, as soon as it hits earth's atmosphere, wouldn't it encounter resistance and thus start slowing down? Terminal velocity occurs when a free falling object reaches a net acceleration of zero. It's the balance between the falling force and resistence. Objects in space can exceed what their terminal velocity would be in our atmosphere. It's not a constant because it can change with resistance and gravitational pull.

We covered almost this exact same issue in another thread... it was a while ago. But yeah, when you're in orbit you're just falling the entire time, and the shuttle is falling with you, so it seems as if there is no gravity. Centripetal acceleration is the force that is required to keep something in orbit. Gravity provides the centripetal acceleration. It is a force toward the earth, not away from it. Centrafugal force is the equal-but-opposite force to centripetal I belive. |
