So I went downtown yesterday with our POS old digicam, and got lot's of pictures, unfortunately only these survived, as most of the floppies were corrupted. Well, only those, plus some pics of my GF, which are private. ;)

Yeah, our very nice DSLR is being fixed in portland, our small digicam is in baja, So I was stuck with our old huge one. Seriously, one of the first wave of consumner digi-cams.

The first picture, its just so generic, you could have done more with the ankle. Playing with structure can be really fun, you can have the most fun taking pictures studying the structure in a park or a big city.

The second picture, i love it, its a good angle, theres something for you in each area of the picture, the pipe draws the eyes from the bottom of the photo to the top showing off the dirtyness of the picture and the angle, really good shot.

Third picture, just a tree. If you can, try and get a picture with a tree just in front of the sun, you get a really cool shot. Same for a lamp post or a basketball hoop.

Another bloody tree. It would be a good study on texture if things didnt peter out toward the top.

The forth picture. Great, i love black and white shots, good texture, but you shot straight at it, that gash is right smack in the center. A couple things, that gash serves as an ankor. and your subject is the entire photo, you arent doing anything with it. It would have been cool if you had your girlfriend in the picture leaning against the tree, you get a close up of the tree, the huge texture of the bark, then contrast it with the face of your girlfriend.

Body parts are always neet. I love to photograph the human body, you can make it seem hard and brutish or soft and supple, even in the same photo. But this picture leaves me limp, its a bad angle and nothings happening but you two holding hands. Its PDA photo, a public display of affection. Wich i love, but you didnt show any of the passion or caring that is at the root of a PDA. If you wanted to photograph hands, wich are always fun, you can catch them working or just sitting, and they are almost always well lit. But this picture could have been better.

Thanks for the detailed critique. It's always nice to see something other than "d00d, thats kewl."

I'm going to work on what you've advised, you sure seem to know your photography.

And the last photo was really just a memento photo anyway.

Man i love photography. And if you like texture, whats really cool is sometimes rust, but go to a construction sight and look for deep muddy tire ruts, if they are fresh and at the right time of day, take it black and white, it turns out really cool. Not just the normal, woo its texture, but there are shadows and whatnot. Its cool.

Nice, I am a bit photo obsessed, but I don't really have a source for education other than trial and error. My dad is a good photographer, but he isn't a very good teacher...

Ask him to take you on a photo outing. Take notes on what he does and read up on photography. You would be surprised on what you learn, try and emulate what todays artists are doing. Pick up on things like style, asthetics and mechanics.

Develope your photo eye and just keep taking lots of picture. Experementation is the best thing for you. Play around and just have fun.

Fine your rythem and style to it, theres a flow. I dont develope pictures or take them without music going. If im in a dark room i either have headphones on and im usualy kinda dancing, or im blaring music. I dont dance when i take the photos though. But just keep taking photos and search for your rythm.

Thanks for the advice. Really, the only reason I can use a camera at all is trying to emulate my dad.

Dude! Go to like, borders, they have magazines totaly about photography. Right now, photography is changing, people like choop are starting to take over the scene, people pushing what we can do with pictures using digi photography and computers.

I like film more... But as long as your doing something cool and new, its all cool.

See whats out there.

Yeah, the only photography mags near here are at the Library, and that's only "popular photography," which sucks.

And I love digital, if you couldn't tell. I enjoy tweaking the final product in PS.

Got any photo shops? They are bound to have literature.

Yeah, photoshoping the photo can be fun. The stuff people are coming up with is really neat.

Here's a pic I took, fooling around with long exposure and whatnot.
What do you think?

I like This part, just because of the color.

If you are going to experiment with long exposure, I'd reccomend something with mild movement, with a reference point that is stationary. IE; Clouds with a lamppost in the shot.

Or try a bridge overlooking on coming cars. And stars. Long exposure with stars with a color camera is COOL. They arent just white, they are all different colors.

I like the star bursts.

But its just a straight forward shot.

There is a difference between a picture, snapshot, and a photograph. Thats a picture that you took on a long exposure. Play around with your subject, it wants its picture taken. Have fun with it. Its giving you the opourtunity. It has shapes, and textures, angles, right angles, large angles, an infinite number of angles of aproach.

When your taking a photograph, its yours, you are esentialy creating a world inside your camera, everything is up to you, focus, depth, zoom, aperature, exposure, light. You can make your photo say whatever you what with just those things i listed. Use them to shape the world as you see it, and create something cool or beautiful.

How do you like the Canon PowerShot A520, jack carver?

I am happy with it overall. It takes great outdoor pics on auto and has manual adjustments for practically everything if you want to experiment a bit more. It uses the flash a lot indoors, even when I think it's well lit, but if you force it off you need some steady hands. I always use all 4 MegaPixels, then pics look great when you size them down. 4X zoom is nice, umm... it feels solid, is a little bit of a battery hog, but you can get rechargables (AAs).  Sure can't beat it for the price though!

Aren't you curious as to how I knew that, Paul? Hate to bust your alter-ego, whaaazup.

Can't you get that from the pic-file also? I know when I upload stuff to Deviant-Art it tells me the camera make, model, Aperature settings, exposure time, etc.

Haha, using my first name on the forum kinda creeps me out. Please refrain from doing that in the future.
