what would be the best red dot scope for my custom 98? I play woodsball. And iff there are people who say: 'you can't be a sniper...' stay away from this topic and criticize someone else. I just need somting to 'find' the target.

A fair number will mention "Adco" because they're the only company to offer a paintball warranty.  If it takes a direct hit that breaks it, you send in the peices, some dollar amount (based on the sight you have), and they'll send you a new (refurb?) one.

I picked up a 42mm Simmons sight for 30-35 bucks on sale online awhile back at **edited**'s Sporting Goods.  It's cool because the mount is reversable for 3/8 or 7/8 dovetail.  This gives you a little more flexibility if you get an offset mount (like LAPCO) that has both a 3/8 and 7/8 rail.

Very first game I played with it, someone nailed it head on with a paintball.  It blew through the front plastic protective lens cover (popping it out of the holder), and slammed into the optics.  It took a bit of cleaning, but it's fine (other than the glass a little scratched by the paint/cloth I was using).

I find red dot sights to be an aid in quick acquisition of the target as they are used with both eyes open (no magnification). I also find them unsurpassed in placing first shot on-target...no having to walk the paint onto the target.

I would avoid any of the "open" style red dot sights as paint can clog places that are virtually impossible to clean on field (even off the field).

I tested my BSA Red Dot sight by clamping it in my vise and , with my marker set at 300 fps, I shot the front lens from only one inch away. No damage and no incursion of paint into the sight. The sight, the one intended to fit a 22 rifle...the least expensive one, is water proof and was cleaned with a squirt bottle of water. After the paint was washed away, a wipe with an old worn out soft cotton T-shirt eliminated the water droplets on the lens and I was back in action.

On the field I have taken to using a piece of 1/8" thick polycarbonate (Lexan) cut-out with a hole saw, that I tape over the front lens. This makes the front end easier to clean and, if scratched, this protective lens is easily replaced.

I use to use a walther red dot sight i bought from ebay. you can find alot of stuff from asia there that is really cheap. i dont really thin it helps much anymore, but if your going hardcore sniper, then id buy one.

personal word of advice though, dont spend any more then 45 bucks on a sight and try to get one with a red and green dot as it will help you sighting in both day and night time situations.

The BSA Red Dot page that I referenced had them for $24.

Cabelas had a deal last year for these BSA red dots for only $19 (which are now $24). I bought two just so I could test one...to destruction if it came to that. The same units were being advertised as suitable for paintball, so I tested it to see if it actually did stand up the "normal" abuse. It is also likely that Cabelas would have replaced it under warranty, though I didn't think about that at the time.

BTW, I have a 16 year old son.

Lapco makes a very nice off-set mount that eliminates that problem.
