My girlfriend smokes. I never thought it would bother me at first, but after 8 months, it's really starting to get to me. I'd really like her to quit, but I know the choice ultimately lies with her. I don't want to break up with her. I don't want to try to change her, but it's been bothering me to no end. We've really been moving into a serious relationship over the last few months, but every time I bring up smoking, she just gets pissed off. I tried telling her how I felt today, and she ended up walking away. I really don't know what to do. If this relationship is going to go anywhere, I can't be living with a smoker. Advice?

Joints aren't addictive, they give you a high, and they(IMO) are easier to get the smell off then cigarettes I hate cigarette smell more then anything. Cigarettes smell, and are more addictive then heroine(spelling?), they don't even give you a high either, until you're addicted so much you need one to "relax," which is all mental IMO. Both are ridiculously expensive... more so weed then cig's. But i would break up w/ her if she's not willing to at least talk about it, that's selfish, immature, and pretty much shows she cares all about herself and couldn't give a rats *** about you. Now if she's willing to change, it'll take time, like maybe a cigarette less a day(donno how much she smokes). Nicarette helps a lot too. Good luck man. ------------- O look, there's nothing here! |

First you need to find out if she actually wants to quit and is scared to go about it. I quit cold turkey a few years ago, it wasnt near as bad as I expected. I waited until I caught the usual winter flu, and just dropped it cold turkey. I was already feeling crappy from being sick, so I didnt even notice withdrawl or anything. By the time the flu was gone, I was done with smoking. -------------

Alright. I just got off the phone with her. (she called me) She just told me that she's not going to smoke around me anymore, except when she's been drinking and when she's studying for a big exam or something. I guess that's a step in the right direction. At least she's cutting back. I still wish she would quit straight up.

why does it bother you so much? As long as she brush's her teeth and
uses mouth wash I don't see a problem, all my last G/F's have been
smokers, it will bother you for a little while because "you" don't
smoke, but out of the blue, ask them for one. heh.. you sometimes get a
wierd reaction or handed one, and if you 'really' care for her, this
shouldn't get in the way to much, if it REALLY digs at you, then unless
she quits over night, this will start the cause of your Breakup... (the
start of arguments etc...) and if she 'really' cares for you any, she
will put atleast a little thought into it, or make an attempt to
quit... all I can say is... Deal with it man... If it's enough to

Normally, I avoid ladies that smoke (since down here in Hell the smoking ladies are usually the ones that God just fried with a lightning bolt) but there is a lady in two of my night classes that I am pretty sure is a smoker, I am willing to overlook that fact since she is pretty darn cute. We'll see how things go.
If you cant stand it, you cant stand it. There are millions of ladies out there, dont think your forever stuck with this one. |

Depressed people, people who have an STD, Hypachondriacs, and those 5
types of people basically cover 30% of American population. Hell my Grandma was a Smoker for 60years, and she didn't get lung cancer or die from a Smoke 'related' death, she died due to old age(82).  -------------

To panda man: It bothers me because it's gross. Nearly all my friends smoke except me. I hate going anywhere out to eat with them and coming home reeking of cigarettes when I never smoked one. It's a stupid habit. It is detrimental to health, and there's no reason for it. I hate the smoker mentality of : "Well, I'm gonna die someday, might as well smoke." See if you can get her to at least smoke outdoors and ban it totally in the car. That's the worst. My gf smokes occasionally, usually only when she drinks, I hate it, so she usually doesn't smoke. I'm not big on dictating somebody else's behavior. I have made it know that I did not like the fact that she had done cocaine, but when I don't forbid her from doing it again, she doesn't understand why it upsets me when I leave her to make her own decisions then judge her on those, instead of just ordering her around like a "normal man" would. If I've learned anything about women from my gf, it's that you should forbid her from smoking and beat her when she doesn't comply, like a real man. Acctually Bugg, I wouldnt really use the DEA as a source. I've had a change of attidude towards marijuana, I'd rather it be legalized then tobacco. Unfortunetly I dont have sources off the top of my head, but from what I've read from both sides studies suggest that it may acctually increase brain growth. Its also not physically addictive (though it can be phsycologically addicitive, but hell, so can eating cake). Also, I beleive the average user doesnt smoke 20 joints a day, so despite the greater amount of tar and other chemicals its a little safer. Plus, according to another site it was only banned because it was damaging tobacco sales and at the time the AMA was protesting its ban. Still, the whole shrinking of the testicles doesnt appeal to me. I'll bet the most addivtive thing on this planet is chewing gum. If you think about it, it's terrible for your health, more specifically teeth. Unless you only chew sugar free. I love smokeing and i KNOW it is ABSOULTLY not deprimental to my health in any way. I smoked the tires on my old truck all the time and im fine  .HEHEHEHE. Naw never did drugss never smoked and never been a heavy drinker AND NEVER WILL. And im past Highschool and College LONG AGO dont try useing that crap as an excuse your just WEAK. Hell some of my friends through schooll dealt drugs and most of em smoked. And if you even LOOKED at a cigerett any were NEAR my car youd be walkin home. Personally i wont even take perscrition drugs or pain killers (that **edited** only makes you weaker). As for the girl smokein well to be honest their aint nothing we can say to make it better, ITs a desition you gotta figure out. i get my high from intimate encounters with my girlfriend... better than any drug in the world. and she doesnt smoke. She did when we first started going together. Not daily but maybe a couple times a week, and i just let her know i how felt about and blah blah blah.. and she quit. So i dont know, just talk to her about it, you just have to weigh the situation and see whats more important her smoking or your relationship. ------------- USAF Special Weapons Technician. |

People who smoke smell like ass. There's no getting around it. after the second or third cigarette of the day, they reek. Now if you want to walk around and smell like ass then more power to you. All of my friends smoke, I'm the only one in the group that doesn't. They don't know they smell like ass. But I do. For this, I ridicule them daily.
As far as I'm concerned, people who smoke heavily fall into the same category as people who don't bathe. Using college as an excuse for drinking/smoking/doing drugs is an excuse for weakness and lack of personal willpower. I went through high school, 2 years of college and 4 years in the Marine Corps and never smoked a cigarette or tried any drugs. I drank socially, but never heavily. You get nothing from smoking or doing drugs except bad breath as Xeno noted above. If you don't mind her breath smelling like something died in her throat then stay with her. I personally don't see how a non-smoker could possibly be with a smoker....unless she's Britney Spears. ------------- Donny Cisneros |

How is that not chemically addictive?? Either way, Marijuana isn't a proven addictive drug, people like the feeling of the high and they just say "I feel like getting high right now," but they don't HAVE to, they're not addicted, it's a personal choice that they could back out of any time they felt like. I think smoking is just weak... especially at my age(15, high school). Kids my age are addicted to cigarettes, just b/c they wanted to act cool and mature, so when they get caught they can brag about it. If you be what everyone else is, you're just like them, which is lame in my opinion.... like emo's, they all want to be noticed, and all want to be different, but they all end up the same. They say how crappy their live's are while they sit on a couch in a huge home w/ every gaming system and their parents running out to get them girl pants and whatnot(for the guys)... having a divorced mom supporting two sons and having cancer 3 times, SUCKS, but i don't let it get me down and i'm always happy. So if you smoke, i have no respect for you, you're weak, flat out. So I say dump your girlfriend man. Don't let her have power over you, b/c then you'll smell just as bad as she is b/c you're going to be hanging around her. ------------- O look, there's nothing here! |

| ive heard mixed things about weed, like i said before i dont really care either which way, i dont do it. i know someone who smokes everyday (i dont know if she really does or not) and she says its addictive, while someone else i know is a recreational user so to speak and says its not. who knows |

For those people that saw smokers stink, how about getting a whiff of your breath every morning when you wake up.
I'd take a smoker anyday. I find it ammusing that non-smokers some how think their "poop" dont stink. |
