compact as all get out, doesnt need to be rediculously fast, say aroud 13 or 15 bps, affordable, so don't over anno or mill. also, don't make it too tall.
here's an idea i was working with. feel free to do whatever with it.

I am leaning more to a military/scenario design.

well if you are going for military look pick a real life gun that no one sells mods to build and you will have a one of a kind

no more mil-sim. we have those out the wazoo. make something reliable, sturdy, cost effective, still reasonably fast, quiet is good, or really loud, and highly customizable. basically, redesign a 98c.

I am going to try to build the hopper into the gun so it looks more realistic.

Disquise a q-loader as an M-203 grenade launcher.

Now just how do you plan to go about actually "building" a gun? Are you going to make sandcasts of modified reciever clamshells and put 98 parts in it or what? Your probably better off just modding an existing gun, alot less expensive and less time consuming, it won't be anything truly unique, but then why would you want something to be unique when you could have something a whole lot more funtional. But hey if thats what you truly want to do and are prepared to devote alot of time to develop a gun then go right ahead.

he got to it first ^^ You should just make new recievers to hold the a-5 or 98 internals, that way you can make the 98 or a-5 look like anything, and you will have a lot of people who will want to buy.

Only in the scenario world. Always trying to make the gun seem more real they are. Thats why Airsoft is so popular.

That would be cool. I think they make kits to convert your gun into one that looks like a 50 cal sniper. But it would be cool to be able to have one that didn't have a hoper and actually loaded through a clip under the gun.

heres what i did. don't laugh. I started with an eradicator made by brass eagle. As you know there are no mod parts that are made for cheap guns like that so i went to the local high-school shop and started working. I hand carved a wooden stock that fits over the hand grip on the eradicator. I then took a peice of copper tubing the same size as the feed nozzle. I put a 90 degree feet elbow on the copper tubing at one end and a but cap at the other end. the copper tube has an 8 pound spring in it to feet the balls. I then turned the tube so that it faced backward and molded it onto the wooden stock with a little bit of bondo. Then i drilled a tiny hole in the side of the gun for a pin. this pin goes through a small lever attached to the cocking mechanism. at the other end of the lever is a slide, mounted into the feed nozzle. everytime the cocking mechanism moves back on the rebound it drops another ball into the chamber. this keeps the gun from chopping the balls and gives me a firing rate of about 18bps. what do you think?
