I heard some kids today complaining that the smoking/chewing age should
be lowered to 16. If there old enough to drive then they are old enough
to smoke. I'm not some big time pro smoker, but I think smoking is no
worse than eating a value meal at McDonalds.

There is no legal smoking age as far as I know. You have to be a certain age to buy tobacco products, and its illegal to sell/ buy for minors, but if you just give the stuff to them, its ok.
And honestly, why is smoking even still legal? |

Individual liberty. I'm utterly opposed to smoking, and I think it should be illegal to smoke in public or around your kids- but if you want to subejct your self to it it is neither my place nor the government's to tell you you can't. I disagree with a lot of laws and conventions on these grounds. That being said, our health care system and/or taxes need to be amended to accommodate smoking related diseases. I think they should calculate the cost per annum to the public healthcare system of smoking, and assess that as a tax on cigarettes- divide the total cost by the total number of packs of cigarettes sold, and apply the tax that way, on top of the taxes that are already there. I will defend a person's right to smoke in their own privacy, but I reject my forcibly-assumed-through-taxes responsibility to pay for their healthcare when it bites them in the ass. ------------- "Abortion is not "choice" in America. The age doesn't matter is certian places around my town. If you go to any gas station passed 7:00, you can get anything. The smoke shop doesn't check IDs. And if you know a person who works at a deli, you can easily get tobacco. |

Man, it's not that hard to get cigaretts/cigars. The local 711 sells them to me. I don't smoke a lot, just cigars on the weekends with some friends. I used to smoke almost a pack a day, but I've been clean for about 2 months now. Now I just smoke cigars for the taste.

My friend's wife is hard to get along with some of the time, but we used to all get drunk and I'd sit outside with her, smoking and talking, for hours on end. Those were our most easy going times, and they're long past. The only other smoking I've done is my pipe with some cavendish in it. I keep it rare for a variety of reasons. -------------
