I was wondering if it is bad to occasionally shoot my A5 without paintballs, just shoot air out of it to see if my gun is shooting properly. I don't do it all the time, just once every 6-8 months.

Not really. It will wear your parts the same when you are firing without air as when you are firing with air. Just don't store the marker cocked.
