As for what I've read, the SP-8 is an Ion with a different body and regulator. if that's worth the extra $100 for you, that's cool. Otherwise, the best suggestion would be to get an Ion.

I'd definitely keep the a-5.
It's an awesome gun, and there are many things you can do to up it's performance. If you aren't running air already, keep in mind you'd need to buy an air tank for the sp8. An air tank would be a good upgrade either way.
If I were you, I'd keep the a-5, get a QEV, and pick up an APE board.

I recently bought a sp-8 and it's well worth it. It's already good stock and doesn't require as much upgrading as the a-5. It's a real nice gun.
Here's mine:

ummmmmm yea but if you get the sp8 you also have to by a HPA tank AND a good electric hopper to keep up with its rate of fire. thats another 250-300 bucks right there. then on top of all that, the adjustable stock cost extra, and so does that sexy longer barrel. so yea....just stick with the a-5.

Teh sp-8 doesn't require hpa, it also takes co2. And he already has a hpa tank so it doesn't matter. He will though have to spend about $70 on a new hopper, assuming he doesn't already have one. He doesn't need the stock right away, but if he does, he can get it for $50 at First Call. And he doesn't need the longer barrel, the stock barrel is pretty good and is 14 inches long. So really, he could spend about $420 and have a nice high-end marker.

I would say stick with the A-5. you could get the A-5 to be just as good of a gun as that Sp-8 if you just bought a couple more upgrades. maybe an Ape Board and maybe some good regulators if you feel like it. but if you like your gun to look more like real guns, the A-5 can be made into dozens of different guns. so you are not just stuck with one kind for the rest of the guns life. if you get sick of it looking like an AK-47, swap it to a M4 or MP5 or a ton of other guns they can be made into. and I donno, maybe its just me but the SP-8 does not really strike me as looking that great. to me it looks like a 10-year-old's toy supersoaker, all you need is the water canister. oh wait, once you add the HPA tank to it, that could be the water..... there you have it..... one 10-year-old's supersoaker.

A 10 year-old's supersoaker? More like a Xm8.

I'd stick with the A5. Get a new board, JCS trigger, QEV, and maybe a barrel kit for something different and you're good to go.

The SP-8 is just an Ion with a body kit. Not worth it. I would ratehr have an Ion that is smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

I'd say go w/ A-5. The SP8 body is all plastic and by buddy's SP8 died in about 2 weeks. And the stock was all messed up when he got it.

Don't waste your money on an expensive plastic shroud for an Ion. Either get an ion or stick with the A-5
