Well I've been training for nearly a year for this, and shy of a short layover in Budapest, Hungary, I will be in Afghanistan by Thursday.

Wish me luck!

Canada is sending troops to the middle east?????? I only thought it was the US and UK and everyone else giving some small support. (Not even any troops). On I think it was Fareignheight (sp) 911 they said that some smaller african country sent monkeys to set of IED's

Best of luck to you, Thor- watch after yourself, and trust in the infantry to keep you safe so you can do YOUR job and help my buddies come home after each patrol.

Stay sharp, and best of luck to you.

Afganistan is a different war than Iraq, A lot of the first world nations with a military are in Afganistan because it is a UN sanctioned "war on terror"

Iraq is where the USA and UK have had trouble finding alies Because it is not a UN sanctioned war and is therefore deemed by most of the UN members as an act of Violent aggresion.

I am not here to argue if the Iraq war is right or wrong. I am only stateing the fact that the UN doesnt sanction Iraq wich is therefore why most nations are not there.

Well guys thanks for showing all that gooey goodness that is support.

The plane rides were godawfully tight quartered, cause i'm too tall for 80's era planes and the herc....well, it was a herc flight.

Landed here at kandahar air field and went on the range shorlty thereafter. Was issued amunition and all the gucci new medical kit(israeli tourniqets and quickclot) and got all bombed up ready for some stuff to go down.

But after all the hardcoreness, i settled down and realised i'm not a combat soldier and won't be going out the wire too often....which is a drag(but that's another story).

I will volunteer to go out on patrol from time to time on air sentry and out to the FOB's.

And reference to Brihard's post, i have alot more respect for the infanteer's going out on the patrol in this heat....so i gave a bunch of them all of the time i had left on my issued phone card.

As for the yanks on this base, i remain unimpressed.

They all act unproffessionally(dropping weapons, catcalling some of the chicks in my section, making fun of other countries dress and deportment)....it's just appalling....some of them are alright(mostly th marines)

And some yansk can't wrap their minds around not having their weapon loaded at all times....it's unnerving.

that's all ican say for now

later

First, Hoo Rah.

Second, do you consider loaded as having a round in the chamber, or as having a clip attatched ot the gun, ready to use when needed?

Im not supraised. The 'grunts' are not always fully deciplined. And I personally think ACUPAT is horrible camoflauge, I dont know why the Army would mock other countries camoflauge. What other countries are stationed at your base?

Thor, are the US Troops you are with Army or Marines?

If they are in the Army, thats about what I would expect. If they were Marines, I would be amazed.

No he didn't. He said Yanks...

So I would really like to know. Because I know what Marines do to those who drop their weapons.

Definitely saw a marine drop his weapon, laugh, pick it up....didn't even dust it off.

All branches of the yank armed service act unprofessional...except for some air force chicks that are easy on the eyes.

And you can never tell when they have a mag on if there is one in the spout, so i take it as a threat since all other countries have a strict no magazine policy. I would be very surprised if haji were to jump over the fence and lunge at me.

Not impressed with the yank war machine except for the actual machines themselves(apache's are something else to see up close....i wouldn't wanna be on the business end of it).

And i don't understand the thinking behind the camo they're wearing because it's grey on white( and looks blue)....which is stupis in the desert.

But yes, marines are just as bad.

Good luck Thor, you're doing us all proud, stay safe, and represent Canada well.

As for the camouflage thing; The company that developed CADPAT also developed MARPAT, so the marines didn't really copy Canada, just rather bought from the same company, a couple years later.

But yeah, grey/blue/white, is incredibly ridiculous.

SuperXero, he's not referring to MARPAT- he means the new army ACUs, which I agree look like garbage. They look like a computer artist got drunk while watching Starship Troopers and playing Rainbow Six.

What's worse is his firing position. Holding the butt up high on the shoulder like that is useless- it's gonna pivot upwards against his shoulder and likely throw his shots high, plus greatly increase shot recovery time. What a beautiful photo full of win.

in all seriousness....they also mostly all lay their weapon ejection port down.

try holding a weapon like that all bombed up in full plates!

Full plates = rationale behind carbine stock on the C7A2.

Ejection port down? Are you serious? We do that here at Ceremonial Guard, but only to keep the white slings clean. It still makes me wince when the NCOs make us do it.
