It's not as hard as parents and instructors make it seem.
After you start driving without any adults in yout car, it's a lot more relaxed and easier.
Also, never rely on other drivers to do their job.. they dont always do it. If they screw up, you have to be prepared.

No offense intended (seriously) but this made me laugh. Teenagers driving WITHOUT adults in the car are about a zillion times more likely to have an accident.

Wow I feel so special being able to drive when I was 14...don't put one hand on top of the wheel and turn with it like that, my drivers ed teacher hit my arm everytime I did that. It's quite nice though if you live on a farm and have an old beater car to wreck pretty much. That how I learned to drive and by mowing lol.

Worst thing ever is leaving the parking lot after school.
Everyone has had their lisence for a max of 2 years (most are less then a year) and everyone tries to get home ASAP.
As a side note, I was the first kid in my family NOT to fail my first road test.. my sisters and brother all had to take it atleast twice.

heh, new york state law
requires you to be 16 to get your learners permit and 18 to get your
full license...however if you take drivers ed you can get your senior
license at 17

Yes, you could say that. You would be wrong, but you could say that.
http://www.rmiia.org/Auto/Teens/Teen_Driving_Statistics.htm - http://www.rmiia.org/Auto/Teens/Teen_Driving_Statistics.htm
Bottom line is that 16-year-olds, as a group, are horrible drivers. They are more dangerous on the road than great grandpa with bifocals and a hat. And part of what makes them so dangerous is that they don't think they are dangerous.
Rule #1 for being a safe new driver: Remember that you are new at this and you suck at it.

i agree with that...my opinion varies on the fact that the
legal driving age in new york is 18 or 17 with drivers ed so new
drivers are a bit more mature and have more experience/knowledge before
they're given their senior license

Driving well seems to be the hangup for most people.
A monkey could get a DL in Kansas. They hand you the booklet with the answers in it to take the written, and the driving test is maybe ten minutes long, half of that in the parking lot.
I failed the driving part the first time though. I was doing fine, but when we got back to the parking lot I pulled into a spot, and, seeing the spot in front of me was open... I PULLED THROUGH!!! The tester freaked out. To that point he hadn't made a sound. I couldn't have gotten that reaction if I'd made for the wrong side of the interstate and got out a blindfold. Right then he told me I'd failed and wrote a bunch of stuff down. You can't exactly argue your way past these guys, so I came back... and I didn't pull through.
I agree with Clark. Drivers starting out need to view driving in a different way. If there's another driver being a jerk, let them be on their way.
If your friends in the car are being loud or distracting you, tell them to shut the hell up.
Give yourself more time to stop than you think you need.
Take your time accelerating. Traffic lights, for the most part, are timed. Try following somebody who is obviously trying to speed to get through lights. Follow them at the speed limit, driving normally. More often than not, unless they run a light, you'll keep up with them pretty well.
Check your blind spot before merging, changing lanes, pulling out of a parking spot. Crap, check the blind spot before you start the freakin' car. A quick glance will save you an accident or two, and save you a lot of close calls.

I heart toyota.
Make sure to always remember shoulder checks. I know people who stopped doing them as soon as they got their license, and it's scary stuff. If you slow down to turn right, someone on a bike could be coming up on your right, you dont look and you start to turn, he's going right into the side of your car. Always keep an eye out/ your mind on stuff like that. It probably wont happen, but what do you do if it does.
Oh, and remember, at a red light, if eyes meet, nod and rev your engine 3 times. If the revving is returned, a race is on. In such a case, all previous driving/ etiquette rules are out the window.

Unless that car is a police car, or there is a police car at the intersection.*
*This rule does not apply if you have two or more of the following: A mullet, an open beer can on your lap and at least two empties on the floorboard, are wearing only torn jean shorts with at least two colors of dried paint on them, are driving a truck that burned three gallons of gas while revving the engine three times, you have a suspended license.

indeed i do have mr kramer...he seems funnier and more laid back than the other guy...everyone says that kramer is meaner though....
so heres an update. i ran a stop sign, almost crashed a few times, constantly went over bc of the damn pedal....it was extremely light, it felt like my foot wasnt even on it...i never went over 40 though i think..its a ford something, i dont know what it is exactly...overall, interesting...oh, and i was the only one the instructor WOULDNT let parallel park
