So I made an image server using Ubuntu 5.10 with Apache 2.0 and WebGallery. http://68.171.90.36:12345/gallery/view_album.php?page=1&set_albumName=Album-1 - url
edit- to just view available directories and files, click http://68.171.90.36:12345/ - here -I put the current version of Damn Small Linux in /files/dsl, so if anyone wants to download it, go ahead. Or just get it from damnsmalllinux.org
Hopefully the link will work.
Here are some shots.
The server itself is a 1998 Compaq Deskpro, which I procured for $10 128 Mb RAM P2 300 MHz

I love messing with old PC's. I bought mine at a thrift store. My friend gave me his old HP, which I used for parts, and my other friend might give her old comp. If anything, I can run DSL on it.

Nice!!
Wish I knew how to do that. I have an old comp laying around and could use a free web host.

It's not hard at all. If it sucks a bit less, you could just use a graphical interface. Other than scrolling the a preferences file and changing stuff you want to, Apache on a unix system is just drag and drop.

edit- once I had Linux installed on the beast, I did everything from my desktop by connection to the server using openssh. So really, you don't even need a monitor, other than for installing the OS. Not too sure how you would do that using windows...maybe with puTTy, or if they make openssh for windows.. I run Ubuntu 6.06 on my dekstop, so I really wouldn't know. Linux > *

it's still going after a good few months.. i made a thread about it when i finished it
I bet yours didn't take 5 hours of frankensteining parts together though. That's the best part.

| Only if you count me ripping the hd out of another comp and replacing it with the original drive.

192MB(3x 64)
no no, my ram came from 3 different places, including from a friend's pile of junk.
40GB(2x 10, 20 ) the harddrives came from old comps.
keyboard+mouse+monitor came from other people, but i don't really count that.

| Ok, well I forgot about RAM. It had only 64 Mb originally, then I put in another 64 Mb from another computer.

edit: weird part is, it was running in GUI mode and all that, then i updated the distro(from hoary to breezy), and now it can't handle GUI, and every time i boot it gives me this big error about X not being able to start..
eh, it's cool though. helped me learn about in text mode.
