Sweeping Winds
- The Chinese Invasion of Taiwan-

a command decisions historical scenario game

July 29, 2006
The tensions between China and Taiwan find their roots in the 1949 Chinese revolution, when communists led by Chairman Mao claimed control of the mainland. Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek withdrew to Taiwan, with two million refugees, vowing the reclaim the mainland.

With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 U.S. President Harry S. Truman ordered the 7th Fleet into the Taiwan Strait to prevent possible Chinese attack on the island. It was the first time the United States had intervened in the conflict between the island and mainland. The U.S. considered Taiwan a buffer against communist expansion in Asia and provided the island money and military supplies. It continues to do so today.

During the 1960s some native Taiwanese, upset by the rule of the mainland minority, began to call for independence from China. It was during this time that focus shifted from reclaiming the mainland to developing the island itself. Communist China vowed that should Taiwan, which it considers a renegade providence, should ever achieve independence and recognition by the rest of the world as an independent state, then the mainland would invade, or worse.

The year is 2008. Taiwan has received its independence. And China, true to its word, has launched an invasion.

This is a historically based, strategic scenario. It will run in 4 phases, with the Taiwanese forces attempting to hold territory against a numerically superior enemy until possible intervention by the United States and other Allies.

The Chinese will attempt to wrest control of the field, with both an amphibious assault on the “beach” and airborne insertion deep into Taiwan.

Points will be calculated by the phase line model, with generals of both sides tasked with successfully defending or attacking bases and territory at certain intervals. There will also be many additional “frag” orders issued by the Higher Command for points.

Initially, the only “respawn” points for all Chinese Forces will be a special one established for this game. After Chinese forces have seized certain amounts of territory, they will receive more. Taiwanese forces have the luxury of possessing all of the established dead zones, but may tactically “nuke” dead zones during the course of the game as a means of holding off the Chinese horde.

There will be rules for the use of chemical weapons (orange smoke), but be warned- chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons sometimes have a tendency to “backfire” on your own troops. Use them carefully.

There will also be armor and anti-tank weapons on the field. Once they are eliminated 3 times, they are withdrawn from play.
