do you know where the embryonic stem cells come from? they come from fertility clinics. Do you realize how much of an over abundance of pre-fertilized eggs these places have. You know what they do with the supply that is unused? They burn them. Throw them in an incinerator more or less. ZOMG ABORTION!!!! Embryonic stem cell research would be doing fertility clinics a huge favor by taking extra fertilized eggs. I'm willing to bet millions of people would be willing to donate the extra donor samples that they might have. Bush's refusal to allow the amount of funds needed from the gov't have greatly cut the amount of usable stem cell lines. The private funding that embryonic stem cell research is getting is certainly not a small amount of money but it's not enough for the extensive research that is needed. |

well if test tube babies are so bad... why not kill them all and study the stem cells!? i would also like to see some facts stating that the natural way is in fact better. i'm sorry but your common sense claim isn't doing it for me. I actually kind of have a divided opinion on stem cells. Yes, i am all for the research, but embryonic stem cells aren't the end all to the diseases that they claim they can cure. There have been some breakthroughs with adult and umbilical cord stem cells that haven't really been glorified as much as they may have been. These include people with diabetes that have been helped dramatically. Embryonic stem cells are more diverse and could be more functional, although they are a lot more touchy and hard to manipulate than the adult ones. this is why they need more funding. I just did some research and a paper on the topic, although more of how the media treats the topic, but I did run into a lot of interesting findings that actually made me change my views on the topic. the president vetoing this isn't surprising and isn't a huge dagger in the side of stem cell research as a whole either. |

Well I find the fact that he used this as his FIRST veto in 5 and a half years (could he leave office early?) to be retarded. The man has refused to veto HUNDREDS of bills, instead he uses his barely legal "signing statements" (which I'm sure will be overturned in the next ten years by the supreme court as the same as a lign item veto) on this issue. He states that he will not let america cross this moral boundry. Well the only reason he won't let america cross it is because under his presidency THIS IS THE ONLY MORAL BOUNDRY LEFT TO CROSS. Domestic spying, unjustified murderous war, no due process, there's nowhere left for people to cross, so he chooses to take a stand here and protect the "life" that is going to be burned up in a fire be discarded rather than be used to hopefully extend someone elses life. It's bull crap.
Moral my ass. EDIT: I realize I sound like a liberal asshole for saying this but jesus christ, there is a true right and wrong to every argument, you have to actually take the time, look at the facts and determine which is in fact right. Not just going by instinct or what "feels" right based on how an argument is presented to you. We're going to hell in a handbasket because people are to stupid to research any issue and rely on semantic arguments to sway their opinion. Blah blah, further rant for a different time. Blah blah. MC Sammich, are you fammiliar with the diseases Multiple Sclerosis and Diabetes (type 1 to be exact)? Well if you are, you should know that stem cells are about the most sure way to cure these diseases. I have very close family members (mother and grandfather) who have these diseases, and the only way that either of these diseases will be cured in their life time is probably stem cells. Do you know anyone with MS or Diabetes? Im glad you dont support the cure.

I dont even know my views on it yet. And since your all talking about it hear, maybe ill get a better answer in here then if i were to just google it, because im not to good with "big" words....

basically... an egg is fertilized. It then starts to divide obviously. stem cells are the first run of cells that the single egg divides into. these cells are the base for all other cells in the body. Scientists want to be able to find out how each organ system and group of cells can be derived from these stem cells. I don't have a really great understanding of it either, but I have a fairly good understanding of the issue at hand. |

From what I know, stem cells can chance into other cell types, Skin cells, liver cells, bone cells, whatever. Someone with type 1 diabetes lacks a certain cell in the pancreas which produces insulin. But a stem cell could become that kind cell in the pancreas and that would rid them of diabetes. If i'm wrong, somone please correct me. -------------

And more. Stem cell research is the stuff of science fiction. In theory (very much theory only at this stage), you could turn a stem cell into any other cell - brain cell, CNS cell, blood cell, etc. You could replace brain cells killed by head injury or Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, or cells killed by spinal injury. You might be able to grow entire organs and limbs. But still only at the early research stages. |

Like someone else said, it's not that suprising and it's not THAT bigga deal. If this tech is viable, it'll happen, with or without the government's help. Besides, when the Dems take back the House and/or Senate this November, they could just push something else through to provide some funds. It'd be awsome if they overid his veto, but I don't that'll happen right now. I agree, ryan, but there is one giant caveat. While worthwhile research will get done eventually anyway, it will get done SOONER with more fed funds than without. Introducing a delay has two negative effects (for us). First, it delays the introduction of the benefits. That's bad for everybody who has a diabetic child. Secondly, everybody else on the planet is pushing as hard as they can on this. That means that in ten years the leading stem cell researchers will all be in China and Korea instead of in California, Madison, and Boston. That's bad for all Americans. It's not just a medical issue, but also an economic issue, and we are making ourselves uncompetitive in a field that we should be dominating. |

actually they have been able to create heart cells, and the wierd thing is that they actually beat. it is really wierd/cool to see. and the thing about using adult stem cells is the fact that there has been recent evidence that older cells don't have the plasticity as younger ones because they are older. also they might not be able to last longer because they are being cloned from other older stem cells. for instance, cloned animals have healthy lives but they age quite faster and have generally take the age of the og cells once they become mature. that sheep molly might have been 1 year old, but was more aged like the mother she came from (cell wise). |
