i was looking around for some smoke bomb to use during paintball and other activities. i didn't find anything localy but i did find direction on how to make them. here's what i found.

i went to http://www.bcvids.com/portal.php - this website and found this http://www.bcvids.com/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1 - video .

supplys

-sch 80 3/4" pvc pipe about 14" long or however you want it. (used sch 80 for preventing pipe to melt)

-X2 3/4" end caps

-a funnel to get the powder in the pipe (like a piece of paper)

-a fuse (a string fuse)

-a bag to mix all the ingrediants

-glue (for the end pipes)

-a drill along with a drill bit for the fuse hole

-potassium nitrate (PNO3) (salt peter) you could use Grants Stump Remover -which has a 99% PNO3

-sucrose (aslo knowed as suger)  powdered suger**

-a grinder if useing grants stump remover

------------------------------------------------------------ ----

1. ok to do this you mix potassium nitrate and suger. thats a 60% potassium nitrate (KNO3) and a 40% suger (SUCROSE) by weight.

*2. if you grind up the pellets from the grunts stump remover, DONT mix suger in with the PNO3 while grinding.

*3. after messuring, grind out pellets if useing grunts stump remover

4. add the powdered suger and the PNO3 to the bag.

5. mix well

6. glue on one of the end caps to the pipe

7. use the funnel and start filling up the pipe with the mixture

8. as your filling, pack it in the pipe alittle bit (using a marker or a rod or something)

9. when you get near the top, get the other end cap and drill a hole in it that will fit your fuse.

10. insert your fuse and fill around the fuse with the mixture.

11. **glue** the endcap on. NEED TO GLUE

your done!

You're on the right track.  Please don't.  I learned this the hard way.

Let's just say, a miniature volcanic eruption in the kitchen.

That's mainly because my cousin got impatient and turned the heat up high, though.

I had flash burns on my face, some burns on my arm from the flying slag, and my clothes were burnt up pretty bad, too.  Surprisingly, we didn't do too much damage to the kitchen.

This has been covered before, and its pretty dangerous to make. If you overheat it while prepping it, it can get WAY out of hand. I've seen scorched kitchen floors, etc from it. I deffinitly dont recommend making it.

We also used the powder-form mix (as seen in the video) in a glass jar, and it burned a hole through the lid (a metal lid, that is), and completely melted the glass.

That stuff burns insanely hot.

We weren't in the woods, nor did we plan to use it in the woods.  We had it in a brick-lined firepit.

I wouldn't recommend that anyone use this stuff for paintball.  Use cold smoke grenades instead, like http://www.prostarsports.net/smoke.htm - these .

Be careful with cold smoke, too, because it can still be a fire hazard.

I would heat the mixture to cause it to melt.   "Cook" is a strong word.

Doing it in a metal tube, that you've glued the caps on...I'd be worried about making a pipe bomb.

Go for the 80 the black type. It shouldnt melt, but if it does, whats it matter, atleast it wont explode.

Try to use a hot plate or something, but do it outside.

Melting the ingredients together will increase the volume of smoke exponentially.

i have the pipe and the 2 end caps. in one of the end caps there is a hole for the fuse in the smoke to escape. is that hole not enough for the smoke and the pressure to get out?    i dont have access to 80sch pvc pipe. i called home depot and they dont carry that high of a sch pvc pipe.

i have some spare 1" sch40 pvc pipe kicken around, will this work?

ok here is what i was thinking. i use steel 3/4" steel pipe with threaded ends. i then use 2 end caps. the 1st end cap i will tighten on. the 2nd end cap i will drill 5 series of holes. one for the fuse (middle) and 4 for exaust (T,B,L,R). this way the pressure/flame/smoke and escape easier. when i light it, the smoke and stuff will be ported threw the top 5 holes insted of just one. i figured since its metal and it has threaded ends on it, i could re-use it and start all over again.     would this work? your opinions are welcomed

I will say this once.

DO NOT BE STUPID

Pyrotechnics are bloody DANGEROUS. I've used hot and cold smoke grenades, pyrotechnic simulators, fragmentation grenades, mortars, and various other nifty pieces of ordnance. They're engineered by PROFESSIONALS using many of the same materials and chemicals you idiots are messing around with in your bloody kitchen. Even at that they aren't necesssarily safe, and they're CERTAINLY not idiot proof- a concern I would hold very high given the propensity you guys are showing to abuse flammables and explosives.

You guys are putting yourselves at extreme risk to your health, the health of others, your posessions, your home, even your criminal records. There is an unbelieveable amount of bad crap that can happen if you kids mess around with this stuff.

At the least you might blow up your kitchen. At the worst you could kill yourself or have injuries for life. Please don't be stupid; I don't want to read in the news tomorrow about some kid who burned half his face off trying to make a smoke grenade. It's not worth it.

If you really want a smoke grenade you can buy them online at fair prices. At least that's safer than what you're planning...

EDIt TOA DD: Carl- yes, smoke is legal here. I went PBing with some guys from my old unit and one of my warrant officers popped a smoke grenade during the game. Lots of "What the hoof!?" from the civilians around us. Kind of amusing. But that's very different from fumbling your way through making your own.

It burns inside the casing, which reduces the danger of fire, but doesn't eliminate it.

i just tested it today. i use a steel pipe like the one in the pic. it worked great. it keeps most of the fire in. i had some left over so i put some on my driveway and lit it. it was so sweet!

im planing on making a flame thrower as my next big project.
