So - here's what happened.

I play Runescape on occasion (hey, I like the price).

So I am happily going about my Runescape business, and some other player comes along and starts calling me a noob.

Now, this happens all the time, of course.  But I have always wondered (a) why people are so rude online, and (b) what the fascination is with that word - "noob".

So I asked him.

More "noob"-ing followed, and some various bad language, but I stuck with it, and asked him some personal questions, trying to understand, all the while suggesting that courtesy is the better way.  It appears, however, that some of my statements/questions may been pretty close to the mark.

Anyway - I'll skip to the end.  At the end of the conversation the kid (12, apparently) is clearly very upset/angry/hurt, and after screaming at me some more, logs off.

So I made a 12-year-old boy cry.

And I'm not sure if I should be embarassed or proud.

I'm gonna have to say proud. How else are they supposed to learn if they don't cry because of something?

Neither , you don't control his thought process. And as you know ,most people have pretty big e-nads, I'm with you though , rudeness runs rampant on the net.

"noob" I think it takes on this attitude "I'm ok , your not ok" (from the book)

I can bottom that. I made a baby scream in fear today.

I was on sentry duty at the governor general's residence today; we're the guys with the red uniform jackets and the huge tall fur hats. Anyway, I was the posting corporal for a few of the sentry reliefs today- I marched out the four sentries and the bagpiper to replace the four sentries currently on duty; sentries are relieved every hour.

Anyway, part of the relief of the sentry is reading the duties of the sentry, and calling various drill commands. I was doing so, and my voice was loud enough that this baby in a stroller twenty yards from me just started screaming. I should have felt bad, but I didn't. Children are coddled to much. The kid'll probably grow up to vote liberal now though.

Rambino, what kind of things were you asking him? That must've been funny to watch. PM if not forum approapriate.

No voice chat - just regular public typing chat.  No log, unfortunately.

All I did was speculate why he would feel the need to call random people noobs, since he wasn't answering me.

My theory has always been to cover up your own insecurities, which is a common enough problem for kids.  Of course, this type of e-bullying (like all bullying) is usually the result of being recipient of some bullying oneself, frequently at home.

So I asked him about his parents.  He didn't like that.

I suggested that maybe his parents weren't doing such a good job of teaching him proper manners, and that maybe they were the actual source of the rudeness.  He really didn't like that.  I'm definitely guessing family problems.

By the time I had concluded that he was the product of a broken home, potentially with drinking and/or beatings involved, and concluded that he got beat up at school, he was definitely not liking it.

I just told him something about himself.  I'm evil that way.

*sigh*

Now I feel like a bully...

Back in my xbox live days, I came across way to many trash talkers. I dunno if you ever saw the True life on mtv with this dude who played halo 2 for a living. Well, Apu and I came across him one night way before the TV show aired. He and his girlfriend were the biggest trash talkers ever. They said they were going to rape us, and do some other things to us. We ended up winning, and right after the game, they signed off.

Sorry to go off on that, but that's one of my prouder moments in online gaming.

And no, you're not a bad person. The kid's father is the bad person for letting him use a computer.

"Wow look at the these low level noobs this is gonna be funny when i rape all of you. (He is a 33, I for one am a 39-on my noob account to just mess aorund on). So we get in the game i pull ahead by about 5, and the kid starts calling me a noob for sword whoring and using "noob combo" (plasma pistol, B.R.). So i stop that and just us b.r. "Wow your the biggest noob ever, blah blah blah. It just makes me mad when you beat them bad and they still think they are better than you.

But i can deal with Rs kids caz there is always that ignore button.

wow, runescape. I used to play that when I was a freshamn in high school 7 years ago. That was before they even had the wilderness or all of the additional quests. I remember when they came out with all the new quests trying to finish them. My character was level 32. If you want me to log in and give you free **edited** that it still has let me know.

He was in the right about the newb combo.  That is probably the cheapest thing you can do in that game.

skills, i play the pc version of halo and people cheat that up so hard with wierd physics, and making their character have like 400% health and everyone else have like 50%, it sucks, but if you find a good game its like heaven. plus the fact that itunes will run in the background and not shut down like most games

Well, from personal research/experience, I know that if you make a 12 yr old cry they're only that much tougher the next time something happens, so you should feel proud you've helped this young man on in life.

[preacher voice, I mean a black preacher too]Why if I had my way, every girl would get dumped by a guy she REEEAAALLYYY likes at least three times in life, and every boy would get, in my professional opinion, at least 10 complete ASS-WHIPPINGS throughout the first 16 years of his life.

Breakdown for guys: When you're born and the doctor spanks you: AW # 1

When you break your first window, #2

BB Gun shot at some guy: #3

First attempt at fighting someone you have no chance at: #4

First football experience ever(full contact): #5

First football game against an older more experience team: #6

Attempting to steal someone elses girlfriend: #7

First attempt to 'borrow' the family car before having a license, #8

#'s 9 and 10 are special and may not always be 9 and 10, but they should be by women, one should be your mother or a motherly figure and one should be a girl near your age, to learn respect for women.[/preacher voice]

I see this alot on cs actually. Random people calling other players many other things including noobs. And it makes me wonder what they get out of this so called "bullying" on a computer game.

Whenever I suggest to them that they are the kids who get beat up at school and that their parents are doing a terrible job of raising them , that seems to be when they get the most angry.

It's quite interesting really. The only place where these kids can feel powerful is on a computer game. I feel bad for them sometimes.

I say be proud.

There be way too many Keyboard Kommandos that hide behind the
anonymity of the internet to be the bad boys in cyberspace that they don't
have the testicular fortitude to be in the "real world".

This is very much the case here these days, that's for sure.

To them, I say, "Screw you and the megapixel horse you rode in on!!"
