OK i will start a thread for all the wackos out there that has the (what if somone could make this paintball gun) just ideas & just fun

A (heavy chain-feed machinegun)maybe feed by a over sized Q-loader about 75 cal.

for the civil war buffs a muzzle loading long barrled paint gun

First one is highly unfeasible. It would require not only a new Q-loader, but a new calibre of paint that no company would make.

Second is very possible.

Ya know, there is a civil war game. It's pretty cool, you have to take off your hoppers and can only hand feed 1 ball at a time. You can only carry paint in like zip-lock baggies and such. It's pretty cool.

It would need to be electronic. No way to time.

Run around with a single shot gun, avoid being shot. Shoot other people.

you can make it like that if you want...  but i don't see why.

Sneaky, I demand you change your sig. On first glance, I could swear I typed that. It confuses me and my teeny attention spand...

And for the Civil War game, you could play just like you want, from geurilla tactics to forming ranks. It's up to your imagination.

While I can't think of an advantage that larger calibre paint would have, I can think of one major disadvantage: heavier projectiles.

I used the calculator at http://grapevine.abe.msstate.edu/%7Efto/tools/vol/sphere.html - this location for determining the volume of various sized paintballs. I found the information on kinetic energy here. The information about paintball velocities and injuries came from an interview with Bud Orr that was published in The Complete Guide to Paintball.

  • A .68 paintball holds approximately 1.317 cu. in. of paint.
  • A .75 paintball would hold approximately 1.767 cu. in. of paint.
  • The larger paintball would hold approximately 0.45 more cu. in. of paint.
  • This additional weight would affect the kinetic energy of the projectile. (Kinetic energy is defined as the energy a body possesses as a result of its motion. The formula for determining kinetic energy is energy = 1/2 of mass X velocity squared.)
  • Increasing the mass of the paintball by approximately 34% would lead to a corresponding increase in how hard the paintball hit.
  • Using the formula above, the kinetic energy of a .68 paintball fired at 300 fps is 59265. (Please note these energy numbers are for comparison only, I was forced to use volume in the calculation as opposed to mass because I do not have anything accurate enough to weigh a standard paintball with on hand.)
  • Using the same formula, the result for a .75 paintball is 79515.
  • The result shows that a .75 paintball fired at the same velocities as a .68 paintball would hit 34% harder.
  • It only requries 12 pounds of energy to break the bones in the human hand. Paintballs are limited to 300 fps because this keeps the kinetic energy of the paintballs below that injury threshold.
  • With all this in mind, larger caliber paintballs would require additional saftey precautions such as stronger masks, lower velocities, or more protective gear.

like I said just fun. the bigger ball would get more range though. it would be really good for just target practice. right???

hey maybe someone could come up with a paintball gun for TARGETS only. then you could go with just about any cal. like the new .43 cal. I think I remember seeing some 50 cal Paintballs for blowguns a few years back at the fleamarket

Why would it go further?

Posted By: DeTrevni
Date Posted: 16 August 2006 at 11:33pm

Momentum I guess. If I'm not mistaken, a larger mass traveling at 280 fps will go further than the smaller mass. Of course, the drag will be a factor, but I don't know by how much.

This is all in theory.

But the large mass, traveling at the same speed as the smaller mass, would possess more kinetic energy which would create a safety hazard for other players.

I was just explaining why it would go further.

Unfortunately that is negated by Mack's point.

But I see what you are saying, and it is true.

sorry to burst the bubble but... a larger paintball will go a shorter amount of distance...
Think of it this was if you have a semi and a car right next to each other on flat ground and you push the semi as hard as you can... then you go to the car push that as hard as you can... the car will go the farther because it takes you less force to move the car..
And if your Momentum hypothesis is true then wouldnt the semi go further.
It would be the same for the larger and smaller paintballs... but i think it would be sweet to have a larger paint ball like for a 50 cal. round cuz if you get hit with somethin equivalent to that your goin to be feeling it

Whoops, the attempt to bust the bubble missed.

Take the said semi and car and get them going down the freeway at the same speed. This represents the 280 fps guns are set at. When the semi and car hit 75 mph, let off the gas. Which one will travel further? it takes the semi a lot longer to stop than the lighter car. It's kenetic energy and momentum that take affect here, not force. Of course, it would take more air to get a bigger ball at the same speeds as a regular ball, so it would mess up efficiency but not distance.

But as Mack said, this is NOT safe...

Edit: Also, a .50 cal is smaller than a paintball...

when i said 50. cal i was talkin in terms of lets say a 22 cal is normal paintball and that bigger paintball would be a 50 cal...

and sorry but you are wrong because it takes much more power to get the semi moving then the car... take the cars engine and put it in the semi think of how long that semi will take to get to the same speed as the car.... you are right the bigger ball will travel further at the same fps but you still have to get that ball up to that speed which will tack your energy....

^^^ See?

Energy = air. It would go further, but kill efficiency.

basically it will take more energy for the bigger ball to travel the same amount of distance... therefore the bigger ball at the same psi will travel a shorter distance

You keep on saying that, then I keep on telling you I know. Which is why you up the PSI to get the projectile the same FPS as the other ball.

OK but what about having a smaller ball like the new .43 you would use less air and it would not hit AS hard. One more plus: you can carry more paint with a smaller ball.

But would fly around more erracticly, and would be harder to break due to it smaller size.

but the 6mm air soft guns are pretty good, right??? but your right they just sting. even though they do make 6mm paintballs they dont bust. I say go with 43 cal anyways, see what happens. it would also cut down (somewhat) on BACKYARD accidents of broken bones, ect.

They do make fairly reliable .50 cal paintballs. I say fairly for a reason though...

yep, Ive had friends get hit in the hand and there fingers brake from paintball going toooooooo fast. aka "backyard paintball" imagine if they get hit in the mask at 350-375 fps!!!

someone from my team (not on team anymore) said "lets practice with the guns all the volocity way up. we can light there @%# up!!! they will feel that!!!"

hmm... I wander why we kicked him off the team?

why dont companies make paintballs more bullet-shaped? even if they were onyl a little bit elleptical, rifled barrells would work, thus increasing accuracy at greater ranges, correct?

looking at the history of bullets, when people switched from round ones to more modern-looking ones, they shot straighter...

Non-spherical paintballs would probably not feed quite as well from the current loaders.

I'm imagining paintballs shaped like peanut M&Ms feeding through a Q-Loader . . . and laughing.

I assume you're referring to simunitions:
  • They feed from regular magizines
  • Last I knew they were only available to military/law enforcement

umm... would you really trust a bullet shaped paintball. I mean there would be some company that would make them just a little to hard then bang dead man.

Hard, cheap paintballs have never caused any deaths.

in the firearms world (or whats left of it) roundballs with a rifled barrel works almost as good as the oblong bullets. almost meaning they have about the same acuracy up to a certain distance. so if you want to try rifled barrels for paintball go ahead but remember that paintball ranges are only out to about 100+ feet.
