This might seem a little far out, but what are your thoughts on the possibility of extraterrestrial life?

I've been thinking about this kind of stuff a lot lately, especially after finishing David Darlington's, The Dreamland Chronicles, which is about Area 51 and related subjects.

To me, it seems that the universe is so incomprehensibly huge and incomprehensibly old, with unimaginable numbers of other galaxies and solar systems, that it seems that the odds are incredibly in favor of other life being out there somewhere.

Of course, if there was, wouldn't it basically blow apart most modern religions and ways of thinking? So what do you guys think?

I think it is very possible, for the same reasons you said. The vastness of the universe etc etc. But im still not ready to make a statement on if i think they exist or not. Ill get back to you.

I've been raised a Catholic, and I've never heard anyone (priest, religious person, teacher, etc) ever talk about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. My guess is that some would believe in it and others would deny it. It just seems that there's no way anyone can deny the existence of extraterrestrial life based soley on the fact that there is so much out there that we don't know about, yet as far as we (everyday citizens) can tell, there hasn't been too much solid evidence that there are aliens, that we know about.

Im a baptist and my bible doesnt mention anything about aliens but I think gods got life on other planets far far away from ours...and the life on those planets managed to find us

I dont think we will ever get advanced enough to find them (I think the world will end first) though

Definately possible and most likely out there.

As for religion. The bible mentions God creating the universe and earth in 6 days but says nothing of him creating life elsewhere. If you want to take the bible literally (yes, Penn & Teller have an episode on that too), then there is no life anywhere besides Earth.

I don't know what the other religions have to say but I'm sure no main stream religion mentions alien life either.

I, not being religious and not caring what the books say, believe that there IS, without a doubt, intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. They just haven't contacted us yet.

I definately do. I've seen some weird crap. When I was little, around 5 ish, my dad and I were at my grandma's house at night. We were laying on the hood of my dad's old Blazer parked in front of the pond, skywatching. I saw a light dash across the sky. I point to it and said, "Look, a meteor." Dad of course didn't see it, it was pretty quick.

Now for the kicker: It didn't fly straight. It flew in an "L" shape, going high speeds and switching to a right angle without even slowing. I was too young to know that meteors only fly straight, and planes don't turn like that.

The creepiest part of it is the crystal clear memory I have of it, over 12 years ago...

Last summer when I was camping I saw multiple lights in the sky that had movement patterns that seemed unexplainable. Similar to DeVreni explained. Three other people with me witnessed it too.

A lot of people have seen things like that: lights in the sky performing manuevers that no known aircraft can execute. I've always wanted to see something weird like that, but I live too close to Cleveland...damn light pollution.

I don't believe so much that aliens have visitied earth, but I think that people who say there's can't be/isn't life on other planets need to hit the restart button on their life, get a new perspective.

I've always had a logical/rational way of thinking, and life on other planets seems like it should be common sense by now, as it has been to me all my life.

If we don't even know all the organisms on our own planet, how can anyone claim that it's unlikely for there to be life on another.

Somewhere out there, there has to be a planet just at the right distance from their sun to create life. I also would think that we aren't the only ones with an atmosphere, to hold in oxygen and stuff, with the many other planets out there. I believe in ET life, maybe because God wants to expirement. But if God is supposed to be all knowing, he would know what would happen instantly.

Don't make this a religious debate ok guys, really. Just stay open minded, but don't act like we are pushing our religion on others.

interesting fact from history channel*
the most advanced plane in the world as far as we know it, the u2 bomber, was built using the computer technology of the 1980's. using the technologies we have available today, i can't imagine what is possible if the u2 was born of 1980's tech.
i'm totally open to the thought of alien life but just saying that maybe some of these unexplainable manuvers in the sky are classified military aircraft... whoknows

yeah, but like none of the US's hardware has changed since the vietnam war, weve been using m-16s for like 30 years, abrams for how long, kinda strange, youd think we'd have new weapons, england and like every other country does

The U-2 is a spyplane, not a bomber. And it was in operation in the 1960's.

Perhaps you're confusing it with B-2 Stealth Bomber.

what does computer technology have to do with m-16's? and they have changed some since vietnam. what about the AK-47, it's been around since the end of WWII and some still argue that's it's the best assault rifle in the world (i disagree)
and actually the army is looking into changing the service weapon to this sexly little number by h and k of germany. last i heard it was being called the XM-8 i think. crazy sexy.
the abrahms has some pretty advanced features too, it has been around a long time, but has also undergone extensive upgrades.

Who says the life forms need oxygen? They could breathe sulfur like we breathe oxygen for all we know, or they could just not breathe, we dont know.

Oh, I missed it then. Yeah, what Savage said...Oxygen isn't a prerequisite for life. Ever hear of anaerobic respiration? Many types of bacteria on earth produce energy this way, without oxygen.

i believe some people think about alien life as being intelligent life.

now different life forms, imo, exsist.  no matter what you tell me about god or odds, i think that if we are the only planet in the entire universe that has life, what a waste we are.

intelligent life i think also exsists but they don't look like us.  but who knows if they act like us.  which makes me wonder if they haven't gone and killed themselves and had to start over a few times.  because the only thing that will bring Humans together is something HUGE, like mass extintion or aliens from another planet.  and i would think it would be the same for another alien civilization.

ok, i am off topic.  but yes, i think there is life out there, there has to be.

I believe life exists elsewhere. I also believe it's going to be a daaaaaaaamn long time before we encounter them whether it's us going there or them coming here.

Who can say for sure though, maybe they've already visited Earth. If this is the case, somebody had better give Randy Quaid and/or Mel Gibson a call.

I beleive there is life out there but I dont beleive its ever visited us, unless Einstein was a quack or these aliens chose to spend several hundread years at very least traveling here.

EDIT:  The real question would not be weither or not alien life forms breathed air but if they had proteins or amino acids.

In all probability, there is other intelligent life out there, however, I think people have much too narrow a view of 'life.' We can't think of Sentient life as only carbon based, oxygen breathing, water drinking, humanoids.

Ya sure about that?

Cherubium angels sure bear some similarity to alien citings.

And really, is water and carbon based life forms necessary?

As to religions - Scientology is based entirely on space aliens.

Then there was that suicide cult in California a few years back...  And there have been others, I'm sure.

As to the existence of aliens, I express no opinion, but I specifically do NOT believe or accept ANY of the currently circulated "sightings" of aliens visiting here.

I'm sure there's life out there, probably some intelligent beings too.  The Universe is just too big for there not to be anything else out there.  What I also believe, is that there is probably life out there something like us if not very similar.  Think about it, the universe is pretty much infinite.  Somewhere in infinity, will be something resembling something else, maybe only differing very slightly.  I'm pretty sure there are plenty of those out there.
