Well, I was surfing the interwebz and I felt my pocket get warm. Then warmer. Then bleedin' hot!
As it turns out, I had a 9v battery and some change in my pocket. The change completed the circuit in my pocket and the rest is painful. The battery was really painful to touch when I first pulled it out, and still is really hot...
Thoughts?

I'll have to try that.
And why did you have a battery in your pocket?

That happened to me once, and then I experienced a massive erection for several hours.

I took my Rainmaker to my proshop, and I disconnected the battery and shoved it in my pocket.
Man...
It's still really hot...

I remember a science project I had years and years and years ago in elementary school, someone switched the wires to short out the battery, so the whole thing got really hot, etc. I wasnt happy.

try connecting 87 9volts, and shocking yourself with them. thats 783 volts. I personally didnt, but i witnessed it. Im a techie in my schools theatre and we use 9volts for our wireless mics. we use 20 per show with new batteries for every night. so we have a schload of barely used 9vs at our disposal. we made a chain, + to - to + and so on, with 87. a fellow techie wanted to conect the 2 ends together to complete the circuit. he put his knee down on the middle of the chain and when he brought the 2 ends together, an arc jumped from the batteries into his leg. he was on the floor a=under a table when he got shocked, the shock made him jump up real fast. he scraped a very good amount of skin off his back, but didnt even know about it untill i pointed it out to him. after that we stuck to using patch cables to draw arcs about 2" long off the positive terminal, it was pretty sweet.

I dont think you realize how hideously dangerous that is.
2 9volt + one capaciter = dead.

well i can see you linking them all together but what i cant see is an arc jumping from the batteries to him or having a two inch arc. as an electricain i know that it takes approxamatly (sp?) 10,000 volts to arc one inch....so therefor this is not feesable |

Dangerous or not, it was hella fun. we did about 20 and got the whole cast to stand in a circle and completed the circuit that way, i was kinda surprised it went threw them all and still had as much power as it did when it came back around.

i'll agree with the 10,000 volts thing and call bs upon your 9v arc story. my van de graff barely arcs an inch by touching it. however, it will arc a gigantic distance when you have attached an incandescent lightbulb to a pole then wired it back to the negative post at the bottom of the generator.

van de graffs are crap, i was shocked several times in physics last year. Anyways, I'll get a pic/vid of it this fall if i can remember to do so. If any of you guys come across a stash of 9Vs, try it. but make sure you draw it off of the + terminal or it will be crappy and small.

see that's the thing, i think some of you fail to note, it isn't the voltage that kills you, it is the amperage. hence why 20,000 or 30,000 charges carried across an arc to your finger from a van de graff don't hurt, nor will they kill you. i'd use mine more but it's been damned humid here this summer so it won't build up a charge very well..

i forget, in a series of batteries like what i had, is it the voltage that adds up and the amperage stays the same or doe the amperage go up and the voltage stay the same?

ouch... well my cousin knew a kid who was lighting off firecrackers with a lighter an then he put the lighter in his pocket while he also had firecrackers in his pocket. well the metal on the lighter was hot and it touched the fuse of one of the fire crackers in his pocket. it was hot enough to ignite the fuse and next thing you know the kids pocket was exploding with firecrackers and he was kicking his leg and screaming trying to put them out. he won a nobel prize for that.

the same thing happened to my father a while back. His work gave everyone 9v batteries to put in their smoke-detecters...and it was that very battery that almost started a fire... how ironic!

9 volts dont get hot enough to start fires, unless you are using something very fine to complete the circuit, like steel wool. try conecting 2 9Vs together, it will get pretty hot, but not too hot to handle.

my dad works at a bomb-making facility. the department he works in, appropriately called "the freezer" is where he handles the delicate explosives (can't list on forum, due to rules for both the forum and state laws). If anything is slightly over 100*F, it will catch fire and explode. it could probably knock out all of missouri....

Eville, just as your 780 volts were able to arc, this battery got too hot to handle. It actually burnt...
Plus, in the loose fibers of jean fuzz, nickel and copper conductor, and 9v of energy, it would seem remarkably easy to ignite something...
I'm no electrician though, so I dunno.
