Do any of you know if there is any sort of option or procedure for a photographer to embedd into unit of soldiers for photographic purposes?
I'm interested to see if there is any means that I could get myself in a situation where I can photograph war, With out actualy being a soldier. I dont want to fight for a political crap fest, But I would love to document it.
I'm just curious to know if any of you mili guys have heard of any such option for a civilian photographer, Or perhaps have some information that might point me in the right direction.
Probly just a ridiculous idea, But I thought I'd ask to make sure.

most embedded reporters from what i've been told from guys who've gone to iraq were with news sources, like nbc. other than being affiliated with something like that, no idea. you could always write them and ask if theyll let you say your with them, agree to give them copies and rights to photos, mabye that would work

I wouldn't enjoy doing that. Just imagine if you were in the heat of battle documenting, and everyone around you gets their heads blown off. I would rather fight than be the hostage who survives with "valuable footage."

This was by far the worst thing I have read on the forum in awhile.
At first I thought it was a joke, someone being sarcastic, but nope, I looked, and it was one of the forum's meat-headed ex-millitary retards.
I am glad you think that all the Journalists over in Iraq and Afganistan are doing nothing to help the country. It is not like they, you know, volunteer to go over into a bloody war zone without any protection and armed with a camera. Yeah man, what a pathetic job. They are such wanna-be artists.
Yes. All of the Journalists over in the war zone should just enlist. Nobody should know what is going on over there back home except for millitary sanctioned press releases. Thats it. Screw the thought of capturing the war for other generations.
Who needs it.

If he was journalist he wouldn't be coming on a paintball forum and asking how to get into a warzone to take pictures.
If he was a journalist he would know how to get to the warzone and document and chronicle the events for the sake of news and history.
He is not a journalist. He is an individual who wants to go take pictures in a warzone and sensationalize the death and suffering of citizens and soldiers.
It is my right to express my thoughts and opinions on this subject because that is protected speech. I thank all the soldiers who went before me for allowing this right.
It is also the right of everyone here to disagree with me. It is also your right to enter a warzone and die.
All I am saying is I hope you exercise some of your rights.

To be completely honest, times were way better when we didn't have a play by play of war events.
Reading about it in the paper is one thing(yes i know about propaganda, so get your paper from the brits)
But seeing live footage of our boys(and by that i mean coalition(brits, canucks, yanks, romulans, and ze dutch)getting blown to smithereens or legs hacked off only deters todays SOFT young men and women from fighting and DIEING for a CAUSE.
Yes, you can sit back and find it so easy to say"it ain't our fight"sitting on a warm butt with a full belly, as many of my canadian fiends are doing. Or you can help others rebuild their country.
That was more of a rant than anything.
But the best way is to become a member of the "combat camera"folks.
They are semi-enlisted personnel that, while not necessarily embedded with the troops all the time, go out on missions and tasks that will be photograph worthy(like gong on big attacks rather than boring patrols)
They tend to not die, but have high incidences of PTSD.
Hope that helps.

Thor! Good to see you dropping in, buddy. I'm glad you're keeping safe over there- 4 more of our guys gone today, but you guys are exacting one goddamned hell of a toll for every shot they fire at you. I know you're still inside the wire, but pass the word on the the guys that we're proud of them, and to give 'em hell. If you run into anyone from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (headdress- a balmorral with a blue hackle), let them know we're all keeping track of what's going, and want to see them come home safe- but kick ass in the meantime.
Stealth- as far as I'm aware, all the embedded reporters are already part of accredited news agencies. You're likely have to get hired by one of them and do a fair bit of time at home before they'd let you volunteer for a war zone deployment. I could be wrong, however. I'm nota ware of any policies regarding freelance photographers.
Ken- get off your soapbox. Not everyone agrees with the war, but anyone who wants to see the truth and to report it should be extended the courtesy of doing so. There should be no fear whatsoever of any open and honourable media coverage if the war itself is just. Stealth isn't using or crapping on the troops by wanting to be there. If you want to help him, fine. If not, equally fine- but there's no call for personal attacks; that's just beneath you.

One. They do wear body armor.
Two. They do cause harm. When we retook Fallujah, a Marine shot an insurgent faking dead the day after another insurgent who faked dead blew up his friend. The Marine was later harassed in the media for killing innocents.
Three. They could really careless for the most part if it will help our cause or not. Look at some of the stories they report. It hurts us more than does good. During WW2. At least the bad stuff was reported later and the media actually helped our war effort. Not damage it today just for ratings.

1) Ok?
2) So that is justification for banning all media? It is not the fault of the
person taking the picture. He is not in charge of how people digest the
photo.
3) It is not the job of a Journalist to 'help out the cause.' The media back
then, 'WW2,' was a propaganda machine. We moved beyond that point,
and we are better because of it. It is not the job of Journalists to "help the
war effort." The fact you think it should be is scary. If a media outlet
'Damages the war effort' by showing what is going on, so be it.
Christ, do they teach you to blame the ZOMG MEDIA in basic training?
Ugh, the thought that people REALLY think that the media's job is to
"support the war effort" is downright chilling....

And it goes for both sides, pro and con.
Journalists should and often do strive to be as fair as possible. It is not
their job to make the war look any better or worse than it is.

OK, calm the bravo sierra. First off to be imbedded you must be a credentialed journalist from a recognized news bureau or newspaper. Joe Blow off the street takin pictures for whatever reason does not qualify, irregardless of intent or skills.
I was a civilian contract security specialist for the media, and believe me these guys have thier heads on a little crooked. Convoy gets ambushed, knuckle head reporter and cameramen stand up and start shooting thier video, and talking, like ahkmad the terrorist will not shoot at them (the actually make better targets than those in the military with the comman sense to take cover).
The ABC team that got wounded did just that, the RPG whacked into the sloped armor of the APC below them, the blast followed up the side of the APC and shreaded thier faces, as they stood in the troop hatch takin pictures, (how dare the terrorist shoot at the press, don't they know that it is not politically correct?)
Get yourself a job with a reputable media outfit, do your time, check the boxes, there will be a war someplace by somebody you can cover, if you still feel the need.

| So much for un-bias reporting. But I guess the folks from CNN kinda shot that down the tube a long time ago.
My personal opinion as a Guardsman is that embedded reporters was the worst idea ever concieved by our military, war is not a game, war is not pretty, it is not easy, and the public doesn't seem to unerstand that. And when we put bias reporters over there with there own political agenda, they took advantage of that.
You asked for my opinion as a man in the military, so there you have it. (Yea I know this thread is kinda over, but I mised all the fun over the weekend, and I felt that my opinion was needed in this afair.) |
That's my opinion on the war, Documentation photographs ar'nt easly going to convey that.
Afghanistan was a real war, that was in our own defense, it was legit. iraq has nothing to do with us, We just did'nt like how things were going so we decided we had the say to intervene. Now it has turned into quick sand, and we are being distracted from our original intent, Terror... And subsituting it with rebiulding a country.
Just my opinion.

I may disagree with your opinion ( but at least you do believe we need to be in Afganistan) but it is your right to have that opinion, and I respect that. All I am saying is that all reporters have an obligation to not convey thier opinion, especially in wartime. When I am watching the news, I dont' want to have any idea as to what the reporters political standing is, and that is how it should always be. And yes, you can convey that opinion through pictures, by choosing what to take pictures of and what not to. By choosing to allways show pictures of ded civilians and say that U.S. troops killed them, and never show pictures of happy Iraqis waving U.S. flags.
(I just tried to show you some pictures of Iraqis waving the U.S. flag to prove that they do still support us but it isn't working, but I do have the pictures, just do a google search for "Happy Iraqis.")

Yes I do agree, By focusing emphasis on certian things I could convey my lean on the war, this is true. However, when I originaly considered this idea I just wanted to document things, what ever was happening in that particular unit ETC ETC. With the new found knowledge of the requirments for going about such things, It would have to be journalistic for the media. That's not what I do, and it does'nt interest me.
And no doubt, with the journalistic integrety we have these days, My "Sponsor" would impose certian objectives to photograph.
