I agree with Cedric as well, probably the first and last time ever...

"play with fire?"   Give me a break, so you play paintball and some ridiculous accident happens and you trip, knock your mask off and shoot yourself in the eye... did you get what was coming to you?

Quit being idiots... the guy had a passion for what he did and he did it in a way that made most of the World love him.   He was also a father to 2 kids and husband to another woman who now have lost him, even without "Crocodile Hunter," that alone would have been tragic enough.

Shots taken in poor taste, here? You're kidding!

Yes, the media overkill is becoming tiresome. But in my opinion, Mehs sig is in seriously poor taste as well as many of the comments here… I'd think you bleeding heart types would have a little more compassion for a guy who dedicated his whole life to nature conservation… But I guess that just wouldn't be forum cool would it...

Ok I agree with Cedric too, But being a nature photographer... Any one who deals with dangerous animals in this manner knows they are risking their life. Steve knew what he was doing, he knew the risks involved. When I photograph bears, I know what I am doing, and I know what could happen.

As for you're stingray comment. That stingray DID mean to hurt him, Stingrays dont have those barbs rigid if they are calm. That barb was rigid and capable of doing what it did because that stingray was not pleased. The stingray knew exactly what it was doing. Steve probly knew it was agitated too, But I cant recall the last time Steve just left a deadly animal alone because it was agitated.

It's sad, He was a good guy for the conservationalist front, He educated many. But he knew what he was doing, he knew he could die. The guy got taken down doing what he loves.

Just dont make it sound like it was some kind of freak accident that no one could have forseen. If i'm playing with a wild wolf and it bights my jugular, It was'nt by accident.... 'Those damn teeth"

That stingray did not WHIP it's rigid barb directly into steve's chest on accident.

The heart itself was a freaken lucky shot, No doubt. But a very good amount of animals strike at either the largest target (The chest) or... the head.

In either case, A deep stingray strike into any part of your body is typically going to be lethal, As it stops the bloods circulation and next to nothing is known about its poisen. Steve is lucky he died almost instantly. It could have been alot more painful a death.

Did it really get the direct heart? All it needed was the chest area, and the venom/poison would have just flowed into the heart anyway.

I dont care how much you care about your job. You dont dangle you infant child infront of an animal while feeding it.

Since when does a stingray not go for the kill. It isnt like they have the choice where to strike or even care if when they use their tail if the object it strike lives or dies.

So when Evil Knivel kills himself on some rediculous stunt is all the OMG!!! OH NOES!!! happen all over again.

Same goes to the biker Indian Larry. I understand that I am going to get flack for my comments, but his deathlooks like Darwin award canidate as well. I mean standing up on a chopper will going at high rates of speed, seems logical to me. Just because the moron that does the moronic action is popular, doesnt make the moron action any smarter.

I will give props to Steve for pulling the barb out but that doesnt make him less of an idiot.

Oh. And Steve-o is an idiot too.

I am not trying to be cool. I am just stating my opinion. Nobody says you have to agree with it.

I find it amusing that Michael Jackson dangles his child out a window and that is the worst thing in the world but Steve Irwin feeds a wild animal from his left arm while holding his infant child with his right arm is perfectly normal.

How can you even begin to compair the two.  You are compairing a ridiculous freak scenario that has a minimal chance of happening to one that has a great chance of happening.

Sure, I was kind of an asshole about it, but the fact still remains that in his line of work, to go out like he did was not very suprising.

yeah it's his line of work and yeah that goes with the job but honestly no being fatally stung by a stingray is not something that happens, you probebly do have better chance of shooting youself in the eye with a paintball gun than dying from a stingray encounter, it's only been recorded a grand total of 12 times irwin being number 12.

You just proved my point again... what happened was a ridiculously freak scenario with a minimal chance of happening.   And the point of my post was that just because you are on the edge doesn't mean you deserve anything... and diving with stingrays is not exactly "on edge."   I've been around, over, photographed and played with many of them in my diving experiences.

I watched a Salute to Steve Irwin last night on TV. It was interviews of when
he was alive. He was raised on a reptile farm. Wildlife was in his blood. At
least he died with what he loved doing and died with pride.

How can you even begin to compair the two.  You are compairing a ridiculous freak scenario that has a minimal chance of happening to one that has a great chance of happening.

Sure, I was kind of an asshole about it, but the fact still remains that in his line of work, to go out like he did was not very suprising.

Seems to me, He did something to that StingRay that it did'nt like. it would'nt have just jammed it's agitated barb through his chest for no reason. Freak accidents dont happen with animals, they know what they are doing as much as we know what we are doing with them.

Calm critter or not, If it feels threatened... It will react.

There have only been around 20 or so deaths resulting from stingray barbs in recorded history out of all the millions of people who have swam/messed with them. I think that is a freak accident.

Steve Irwin was a great guy and did so much so animal conservation. It's really a tragedy that he's gone.

I dont know about you, but i've watched Steve handle some extremly agitated creatures before. I have a hard time believeing the was a freak accident. I can just see him swimming up to that thing ---

And you know you can see it too.

saw that same thing.  did u see the part where he found that scuba diver on the rocks and rescued him?  amazing stuff.

also about the baby thing, he did a public apology about it.  but think about it, it sorta makes sence.  his family has been around crocs for quite a while...  he was just trying to pass on the trait...  granted, he should've thought it all the way through...  babies+croc=bad.  but what else have you got on him?

I'm not referring to him getting stung with the barb, I'm referring more to the death. There are 1500+ stingray related injuries PER YEAR. There are about 20 recorded deaths.
