So I'm turning 18 soon and need some opinions on what type of gun I should buy. I'm limited to Rifles and Shotguns. Shotguns also can't be pistol grip. Lets put the price cap at $1,000.

Well, hand's down Benelli is the best shotgun maker out there. Price cap at 1,000? Let's see...I finally went back to firefox 1.5 so I should be able to Hyperlink.. http:// - http://www.benelliusa.com/ The Legacy is in my opinon, their sexist shotgun...just look around, they aren't "over-priced" however much you pay, is what you get. Only shotgun I would goto would be a Mossberg..

For overall versatility, I suggest a shotgun... I agree somewhat with tippmania. Benelli operates under the umbrella of the premier (and incidentally the oldest) gun manufacturer in the World... Beretta. Besides Benelli, other members of the Family include Stoeger and Sako.
The higher end Berettas share the same action as the higher end Benellis. Although I do have a couple pump guns, a Side X Side and a couple over/unders... since this action is pretty much bullet proof, I see no reason not to shoot a Semi-Auto.
In your range, I would suggest a Beretta Xtrema 1 (or Model 391). Go with a 12 ga chambered in 3.5" for maximum versatility. You will be able to shoot anything from 2.75" target to 2.75" Game Loads to 3" Magnum Duck loads to 3.5" T-Shot for Geese.
If your budget allows a little more, go with an Xtrema 2 or the Benelli Super Black Eagle 2. The problem with the SBE2 is that they are difficult to find in anything other than a gloss finish which is fine for Sporting Clays and Skeet, but is a little blingy for the duck blind.
It is a tradition in my family to present every male that turns 16 with a shotgun. Shotguns usually stay with their owner for life... so don't skimp... buy something you will cherish forever.

Remington Model 700 BDL, Browning A-Bolts are awesome guns, Any .17 caliber rifle, theyre really fun to toy with and to shoot small game. I have a benelli nova pump gun, very nice shotgun. All those are way under a grand.

Wow... You should both listen to me before saying stupid things. The code you gave me did not work. Nor did the button, TehGangster I officaly believe you are mentally-retarded and I've never really hated anyone on a forum before.. but now I do. You do not read what I write, instead you just comment without thinking. As I said in the post before, FIREFOX 2 WOULD NOT LET ME HYPERLINK IN ANY MANNER. I am BACK to FIREFOX 1.5 so IT IS NOT letting ME DO IT! I have to cap or else neither of you will read and you'll once again, comment w\o knowing.

You know I really like my Remington 870 express super magnum. It holds 3.5" inchers so it's got all the versitilties along with different chokes. Now yes I know that it's not fancy like the benelli's and whatnot. But you know what, I'm not a fancy guy. It's a quality gun thats been proven to be reliable that doesn't cost you alot. I can't hold it behind my back and shoot it and not have it rip my arms off and empty the gun fast enough to turn a flying bird into a powereded fluff in the sky. Heck I enjoy walking around with our old trusty single shot 4-10 just for kicks and giggles. So think about it really, do you need that fancy of a gun? Of course you get all the nice benefits .

Tae- I never posted drunk.
The rifle will most likely be deer hunting and range. Thinking 30.06
Shotgun, some hunting mostly skeet.
I want a M1 Garand but their a bit out of price range. For the sake of having a historic rifle and sounds awesome.
The $1000 price tag is plausible but about $500 is realistic. Depends what my paycheck and if any birthday $ I have.

If you're looking for deer hunting/target shooting My suggestion is exactly what you posted......a nice 30.06
Savage makes good ones, my father's owned one for years and its a joy to shoot.
If you've got no expierence shooting however, I suggest picking up a nice cheap .22 first and get the hang of it. Scrap the 10/22 idea and pick yourself up a bolt action. Theres no need for your first rifle to be anything other than a bolt action, you learn nothing from semi-autos, or even lever actions.
I don't suggest these actions for anyone but expierenced shooters, otherwise you're burning ammo.
If you've got some trigger time behind you and want to skip the educational phase of your shooting expierence, pick up either a 30.06, or you can find .303's pretty cheap at gun shows. My primary deer rifle right now is a British enfield in .303 Its a great round.
Some people will suggest to you something in .270 or 7mm. Its six of one, half a dozen of the other. My vote goes to a Savage Arms 30.06 in bolt action though.
...and synthetic stocks are for wusses.

1000 is a lot of money for your first gun. and the fact that you have relatively no preference as to rifle or shotgun leads me to think maybe you should start a little lower on the totem. maybe a marlin ruger 10-22, or like remington 870, not express or magnum nothing crazy. the ruger is a good quality spiffy little rifle that i've had a lot of fun plinking with and shooting the occasional squirrel. the 870 (standard) has taken an untold number of birds( it is the wingmaster!) the clay ones too, and it's also what i usually take deer hunting. point being the 870 is a great all around shotgun that you can easily afford.
there are some beautiful beneli's and franchi's out there over unders and side by sides, but.. your first gun?... start slow.

Buy a decent .22 if you've never really shot before. I have an M1 and love it, but it's really not for a novice shooter. Take an NRA safty course and some marksmanship courses and learn to shoot right before you go buy an M1. If you want a semi-auto centerfire rifle, pick up an SKS. They are cheap, and so is the ammo. It will take a deer out to about 150 yards. If you buy yugoslavian, buy a new one, they run about $220 still in the packing grease. It's a simple and reliable rifle and accurate enough for the job. It's a good beginner rifle.
